4 P AGE 4 N OVEMBER 2014 SPECIAL ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS by John Keeny Sunday, November 16 10am in the Chapel Our church is privileged to host Charlotte Bonelli. She is the Head Archivist of the American Jewish Committee in New York. Ms Bonelli is the author of the acclaimed Exit Berlin and is in Columbus for a series of lectures and appearances at Ohio State, King Avenue, and Jewish organizations. Her visit is sponsored by the Melton Center for Jewish Studies, the Department of History at Ohio State, and King Avenue. Exit Berlin is unique in that it presents the conversation between American and German Jews in the late 1930 s and early 1940 s as the situation in Germany deteriorates. Usually the American voices are not documented. It tells the true story of a young, immigrant Jewish woman s effort to save her extended family when she has essentially no resources in America. On Sunday, November 16, at 10am, we shall hear her presentation at King Avenue on The Importance of the Family during the Holocaust. Obviously this is a special opportunity for our church. Her book will be on sale in the milling area on November 9. Also her lectures to the OSU History of the Holocaust class on Monday, November 17, at House 1 at the Gateway Theater, at 1:50-3:10pm; and at the Jewish Community Center, 1125 College Avenue at 7pm are open to the public. Visit for more details.

5 CARILLON P AGE 5 MISSION: CHRISTMAS by Anna Guillozet It is never too early to start thinking about your Christmas shopping! Join us in supporting the 2 nd Annual Mission: Christmas at King Avenue. This alternative giving opportunity allows you to simplify your Christmas shopping while supporting King Avenue Missions. For example: Instead of buying your partner another tie, consider sponsoring 10 meals for the homeless at Gates Fourth Church. Catalogs will be available in November 23 rd, and you can shop the mission market to make your selections on November 30, December 7, and December 14. Giving Tuesday Match Gifts made to the Casa de Misericordia partnership on the November 30 th date will be submitted for matching through the UMC s Advance Giving Tuesday. The Advance has allocated up to $1 million for matching funds. Double your impact for a great missional partnership! COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP UPDATE by Colleen Ogle Thirty individuals have begun to meet weekly with students at the Hubbard Mastery Elementary School to offer them reading practice and coaching as a result of the KAUMC- Hubbard School Partnership. Twenty-three people from KAUMC joined by seven OSU students volunteering through Circle K are meeting with a total of 53 students each week. It s a great start! Reading Buddy Volunteers report that it is a highly rewarding experience. The children relish the one-on-one time and the school staff truly appreciates the community support for their work! We hope to continue to recruit additional Reading Buddies and substitute Reading Buddies throughout the year. If you are interested in becoming a Reading Buddy, contact Rev. Colleen Ogle (colleen@kingave.org) or Lois Dosky, Chair of the KAUMC-Hubbard Partnership (ldosky@att.net). It only takes one hour to become trained and there is a regular schedule of training sessions.
