3 CARILLON PAGE 3 September Special Offering Special Offering for September will help separated families in Ohio Starting Point Outreach Center in Willard, Ohio offers a wide range of supportive programs that meet critical community needs. It is a faith-based ecumenical and community ministry started by First UMC of Willard. This small town is home to many immigrants who perform seasonal agricultural and landscaping labor, including workers at the Corso Flower and Garden Center. The I.C.E. raid of last June resulted in many separated families. Along with many other services, Starting Point connects families to immigration legal services and has helped reunite families. Don Peeler, Executive Director and Founder of Starting Point, will share a witness during worship and an informational presentation about Starting Point s work during the 10 am education hour on Sunday, September 16 in the Chapel. New Class! "Spiritually and the Twelve Steps", led by John Keeny and Rick Gilson We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world. The class will apply the twelve steps to our spiritual lives and is based on Richard Rohr's Breathing Under Water. The 6-week class will be offered twice a week in the chapel. Tuesdays at 10am, beginning September 25. Wednesdays at 7pm, beginning September 26. Copies of Richard Rohr's book will be on sale beginning September 2, suggested price is $15. Art Gallery Neighbors Paintings by Eric Mize September 2 October 28 Gallery Talk on September 23 at 10 a.m. About the Neighbors Series: Throughout much of the world, the glory of a given culture often stands in disturbing contrast to the plight of its people. So much depends on one s eye in finding tragedy or finding wonder to celebrate. This dissonance is at the core of the Neighbors series. It is an exploration of the bizarre balance between desperation and dignity. The subject of each painting in this series represents a particular at-risk people group. Each piece is intended to first celebrate the uniqueness and wonder of the culture before drawing attention to the dilemmas. In the statement beside each piece, you will find information about one nonprofit organization seeking to engage and assist that particular group. Most organizations meet basic needs or do development work, while others seek to end injustice, provide medical care or address spiritual needs. Some of the agencies reflect the artist's own convictions, but this is a venue for everyone, regardless of background or interest. Providing viewers with an opportunity to engage in some way is essential to the show. But, for most, this is an opportunity to reflect, dialogue, and connect with information to consider later. About the Artist: So much of our new-century digital lifestyle drains us. My goal is to create visuals that nourish and enrich. Having long earned a living as an electrical engineer and team leader in the tech industry, I m in a transformational life season, allowing me pursuits that align with my convictions, passions, and gifting. More than a decade ago, life brought me to central Ohio. There, I ve had the privilege to see my children grow into two fine young men and where I still share life with my bride. About the time we came to Ohio, my eyes were opened to a more global view. I learned that more human beings live in bondage now than have ever been enslaved in all history 1 in 6 people of the earth don t have safe water to drink - 40% of the world s population live on less than $2 a day and 1/3rd of humanity doesn t have access to the spiritual message that so profoundly shapes my life. So, I found myself driven to explore tangible connections with the people that inhabit the developing world. Short trips, some non-profit work, and engagement at a local refugeecentric community center have brought new friendships and discoveries. It is this joy of finding personal connections with people of exotic traditions, faiths, and cultures that I m trying to put to canvas now.

If so, I m here to help. I have been attending King Avenue since I have been a lifelong Methodist, raised in North Carolina and have lived on both coasts and the Midwest with my professional career in apparel and accessories companies. I began attending Morning Blend with my partner, now husband, Philip. We were invited by our friends who had begun attending as they wanted to raise their children, our Godchildren, in a Christian home. We were looking for a church where we could worship as a couple; and that would be a nurturing environment for not only us, but for our family. We found this in King Avenue and have made connections with people that have become our extended family as we travel this road of life. Philip and I have been involved with many of the ministries of the church. I have sung with both the Blenders and the Chancel Choir and served as a cantor for communion services. I have taken to the stage with the King Avenue Players, and continue to be blessed by the work of these groups. I have served on the Spectrum and Huggins Fund committees. I will be working with the committee on our upcoming Capital Campaign. Philip serves as a delegate to our conference, previously served as Lead of Morning Blend Ushers, and plays in the Bell Choir. There are so many opportunities and ways to connect with your King Avenue Family. Christ brought together others to learn, teach and worship. Worship comes in many forms. It can be within the pews and chairs on Sunday morning. It can be joining a small group/ bible study or dinner company. It can be packing lunches for the Open Shelter or hosting during coffee hour. There are as many facets to our worship as there are to our own personalities. The core of my personal relationship with GOD was instilled in me as a child. It isn t only the works of our own hands, but the connections that we make with others. Through this we can do more than we ever imagined alone. NNEMAP by Roy Clark NNEMAP will kick off our 50th anniversary on Saturday, September 22nd at 7:00 pm. "A Night At The Museum" will be held at the Ohio History Center, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, and will commemorate both our beginning in 1969 as well as the groundbreaking of the Ohio History Center building. Music from the 60's and food from our Linden neighborhood will be featured. KAUMC Begins Health and Wellness Ministry with Parish Nurse Faith Dive Sunday School class meets at 10:00 am in the Logos Lounge (L1). Jump in as we start the new Sunday school year on September 9 th with a focus on Who is My Neighbor? We ll join the general Sunday School class on Sept. 16 th for a wonderful guest speaker sharing his sanctuary ministry to immigrants and refugees at risk for deportation. We ll also be discussing asylum and watching Won t You Be My Neighbor! The Faith Dive Sunday School Class was formerly known as Blessed Believers and is led by Rebecca Walter. Virginia Sheffield, R.N., has experienced a call to use her training and experience as a public health nurse to promote health and wellness in the KAUMC community of faith. In conjunction with the pastors, Virginia plans to develop this volunteer ministry at King Avenue UMC, supported by Parish Nurse resources offered through the Ohio Health Faith Community Nursing initiative. The concept of the Parish Nurse has its origins in the Christian understanding that the physical body is a good gift of God's creation. Health ministries express the church's concern for the entire well-being of persons. Virginia has identified a calling to Parish Nursing over time. She writes, My career in nursing has always included caring for the patient's mind and spirit as well as physical condition. I have friends in parish nursing and have studied it formally through Otterbein College. Loving this congregation as I do, I became interested in performing this type of role at KAUMC and look forward to developing ways to enhance our current ministries with an eye towards promoting health and wellness. Becoming a KAUMC Parish Nurse is not the only big news in Virginia s life. She recently wed Tracy Hahn, her partner of almost eight years. Tracy and Virginia joined KAUMC in January, 2011 and have been a vital part of this congregation ever since. You can follow the development of this ministry in upcoming months through Virginia s monthly column in the Carillon. Also, this it would be valuable to us if this person knows or is willing to learn the basics of the Square credit card processing system and will oversee the processing of credit card transactions when tickets are sold before and after worship on three Sundays in March.
