Envelopes, inserted in both services bulletins, will be available for your use. Women s Bible Study Starts January 7 Meets Weekly on Thursdays 9:30-11:00 am Join Rev. Colleen Ogle for a Bible study with a twist. Bad Girls of the Bible: And What We Can Learn From Them by Liz Curtis Higgins introduces readers to ten of the Bible s infamous but oh-so-human characters and thereby illumines both human nature and the amazing depth of God s grace. The author combines good scholarship with humor and a fictive imagination to make ancient characters come alive and speak today. Participants will have light reading to do, with DVD presentation and discussion comprising the bulk of class sessions. Childcare available upon request, please indicate your interest in the class and need for childcare by ing colleen@kingave.org.

4 PAGE 4 J ANUARY 2016 RETREAT for SPIRITUAL RENEWAL JANUARY 30, 9am-3pm led by Colleen Ogle We greet the new year with enthusiasm and hope! The UMW will host a retreat January 30, and invite all King Avenue men and women to attend. The retreat will be led by the Rev. Colleen Ogle with the theme of Happiness which was one of the topics in last summer's Mission U. We will gather for coffee and refreshments at 9 am. The morning session will be followed by a delicious lunch at noon. The afternoon session concludes at 3pm. The cost is $10. Registration material will be available in early January.

5 CARILLON PAGE 5 FAITH FORMATION by Colleen Ogle Cross Currents Sundays, 10 am in the Chapel January 3 February 7 Meet the Teacher Hello! My name is Lejla Maley, pronounced /Layla/. I am originally from Bosnia, hence the spelling of my name. I moved to the United States in 1994 as a refugee to escape the war-torn Balkans. I grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio, but I have lived in Columbus for the past ten years. I have been attending King Avenue for six years. You can usually find me at the 11:00 o clock service sitting in the balcony alongside my husband, Brett. What attracted me to King Avenue was the inclusivity and diversity of the congregation, and opportunities for outreach. I have attended and enjoyed a few of the classes and small groups offered at King Avenue, and I couldn t be more excited to lead one on contemporary issues. I currently teach at Otterbein University, while pursuing my PhD in Leadership and Change at Antioch University. I look forward to engaging conversations and learning opportunities. Cross Currents will take up a new topic every week, with issues drawn from current events and daily life brought into conversation with core Bible passages and theological principles relevant to the topic. This discussion-oriented class will use the digital curriculum, FaithLink, as its primary resource. FaithLink topics from the past several months include: Welcoming the Outsider, Sustainable Development Goals, Food Waste in the United States, Physical Activity and Faith, Atheism in the US, and much more. MISSION: CHRISTMAS by Colleen Ogle The Mission Lead Team would like to thank you for your generous support of Mission: Christmas As of December 22, we raised over $4,568 this year. Your giving allows the many missions of King Avenue to continue to invite, welcome and honor all people and nurture them to grow in service with Christ. We are certainly reaching out from beyond our church walls. From NNEMAP Food Pantry in the Short North and Gates Fourth Breakfast on the South end to our Mexico Partnerships and the global work of Imagine No Malaria, we are making a difference! A key goal of the sessions is to help the church staff know you well enough to help you use your gifts and graces in service of Christ. Classes beginning January 10 at 10am are hosted by the Connections ministry team (Susan Jenkins, Chair), led by Revs. Keeny and Ogle, and feature guest appearances from church leaders of the Missions, Faith Formation, and Finance ministry Please contact colleen@kingave.org if you wish to sign up or have questions. Spectrum is sponsoring a fun night of Euchre and other games on Friday, January 29. More information will be sent in an blast. (To be added to our contact list, Steve Hull expect.sh@gmail.com.) Also that weekend, we are sponsoring an all church luncheon with a menu filled with comfort food. Join us at noon on Sunday, January 31. Volunteer opportunities will also be sent out in an blast. Thank you for your continued support. What fun we have had in 2015 marching with Pride through puddles, square dancing, playing cards, rooting on our favorite teams, celebrating Marriage Equality, and, of course, enjoying meals together! Much is planned in the coming year under the leadership of new Spectrum Council members Steve Hull (Chair), Andrew Littlefield, Susan Taylor and Clay Evans who are joining continuing members Dan Bidelspach and Jodie Brown. "Retiring" council members Michael Hicks, Jonathon Zornes, Virginia Sheffield and Judy Callander are grateful for your friendship and presence and we look forward to a new year of Spectrum fun!
