2 STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR S MESSAGE The Knights of Columbus Program Activities are the Soul of the Order. Offering service programs to our members, our parishes, our local communities, our dioceses and even our country has a positive effect on our church. Fr. McGivney s dream was to make sure the widows and orphans were taken care of in the event of the untimely death of her husband and their father. But to serve our church is more than a financial responsibility, it is a responsibility to nourish them in their faith and to reach out to those less fortunate than ourselves. Pope Francis said Let us never forget that authentic power is service, and that the Pope too, when exercising power, must enter ever more fully into that service which has its radiant culmination on the Cross. The Church is equally aware of the responsibility that each of us bring towards our world, and to the whole of creation, that we must love and protect. And we can do a lot for the good of the less fortunate, for those who are weak and suffering, to promote justice, to promote reconciliation, to build peace. With these words ever so ingrained in our hearts and minds we have been challenged by Pope Francis words to use the service programs of our Order to help build up the church and human dignity. When we become servants to our brothers and sisters the Knights of Columbus will grow in membership and be at his right hand to carry out his words. We are challenged as councils, assemblies and chapters to be aware of the many programs we can offer, but it is also important that we select at least one program in each of the seven categories to promote. Don t forget that a council cannot act alone and see their role only has servicing their parish. As councils we must also reach out beyond our local church and help our diocese and those in need throughout the world. The Seven Categories are: Church Activities, Council Activities, Family Activities, Youth Activities, Culture of Life Awareness and Activities, Community Activities and Vocation Awareness and Activities Included in this handbook are the seven categories with specific programs listed under each one. Each chairman listed is responsible for promoting the activity and supporting you in achieving success in your council's, assembly s or chapter's projects you choose to make part of your Columbian Year. Helpful Hints Appoint a chairman as soon as possible. Document events as soon as they are over. Participate as a council in at least one service program per category (Church, Youth, Vocations Etc) John D. Bertrand, State Program Director Creciente Ct. 10 ADOPT A SEMINARIAN PROGRAM FOR THE CATHOLIC CLASSROOMS The purpose of this program is to encourage classes in Catholic Schools or Religious Education to adopt a seminarian and support him through prayer and communication throughout the school year. A spiritual adoption is a pledge to pray for seminarians on their journey to fulfilling the Call of Christ to the priesthood. The path each young man has committed to embark on isn t an easy one. It is one of self-sacrifice and humble devotion to God and others. The young men in our seminaries have taken up the challenge of duty and devotion to the Lord and his flock. Action Steps: 1. Through your pastor or diocesan vocation office select a seminarian your class wants to adopt. 2. Involve your class in the selection process. 3. As the teacher make an initial contact with the seminarian and let him know that your class is adopting him for the school year. 4. On a regularly scheduled basis have your class write letters, notes, pictures, birthday cards, Christmas cards, Easter cards etc. Be creative. The point is for your students to communicate with him on a regular basis. This can be accomplished if you do it as a class activity. 5. If the seminarian is available invite him to the class at some point during the year and have him share his journey of discernment. You can make this into a pizza party etc. Again be creative. 6. Contact the Vocation Resource Team for questions and additional help. 7. This program can include postulants discerning a vocation to Religious Life or can be tailored to adopt a priest or religious Rene Perez, State Chairman: ; marianrp3773@hotmail.com

Check with your local diocese for possible support and participation. Steubenville Event in San Diego VOCATION POP-UP BOOTH IN ACTION Throughout the entire conference the California Knights of Columbus Pop-Up Vocation Booth was available to all of the conference participants. The booth was manned by Knights and their wives, Religious Sisters, an occasional Priest and some seminarians. Miracle at the Booth: There was a young lady who came by and shared that she had not been to confession since her first communion. She said she wanted to go but was hesitant, reluctant and somewhat afraid of what the priest might say to her. All those working at the booth at the time told her not to be afraid and that Jesus would be there at her side. They told her that they would pray the Rosary for her to gain the confidence and strength she needed to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. A short time later the workers at the booth found time to pray the Rosary together for this young girl s strength. About two hours later she came back by the booth and personally thanked everyone and proclaimed that she was treated with dignity and felt so cleansed and renewed after completing her confession. Gratitude from Conference Participants: Thousands of conference participants stopped by the booth and their questions about church vocations and other topics were discussed. Lots of resources were given out to help them to be open to discovering the vocation they are being called too. Everyone who stopped by was grateful that the Knights of Columbus cared that much about them that they would take the time to be there throughout the conference. 16 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Each year, on the Fourth Sunday of Easter (March 15, 2015), Knights throughout the world participate on the annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations. This day is an opportunity for all Knights to raise awareness of the need for men and women to say yes to their vocations, especially if one is called to the priesthood or religious life. With the help of the Knights of Columbus, thousands will hear their calls as a result of our prayers and vocation materials. As Knights, we know the difference that one good priest can make. Raise awareness and get involved. Ralph Manredo: ; rpmanfredo@sbcglobal.net

17 VOCATION AWARENESS VIDEO CHALLENGE Why did God make us? To Know Him, To Love Him and to Serve Him. The real challenge for all of us is how we will individually carry this out in our life. All of us are called to a vocation in life. It is through this vocation that we will be able to truly answer the question above. It is never too early to start contemplating the vocation that God has in mind for us. To stimulate Catholics of all ages the Vocation Awareness Video Challenge was created. PURPOSE This challenge is being offered to stimulate the minds of our youth and young adults as to what Church Vocation God is calling them to. Church Vocations for this project are: Priest Religious (Sister or Brother) Marriage (Sacrament of Matrimony) PROJECT Develop a one minute video on vocation awareness or calling in one of the follow topics: DISCOVER WHAT VOCATION YOU ARE BEING CALLED TOO! EXPLORE THE CALL TO BECOME A PRIEST! EXPLORE THE CALL TO BECOME A SISTER! EXPLORE THE CALL TO MARRIED LIFE! PARTICIPANT CLASSIFICATIONS Elementary (Grades K through 8) High School (Grades 9 through 12) Open Classification (Any age: Youth, Young Adults, Adults or Seniors) TARGET GROUP OF VIDEO: Target video to one of these groups of Catholics Elementary Age Students High School Students Young Adults (18 to 40 years of age) Topic of Video DISCOVERING WHAT VOCATION YOU ARE BEING CALLED TOO! EXPLORING THE CALL TO BECOME A PRIEST! EXPLORING THE CALL TO BECOME A SISTER! EXPLORING THE CALL TO MARRIED LIFE! PROCESS 1. Select the topic of your video. 2. Select the Group you want to target in your video. 3. Create a one minute video TECHNICAL VIDEO PROCESS HELP Set up a Knight in the chapter to give help participants in technical development of a video. This person could set up a seminar for all participants TIME LINE July and August:

JUDGING Chapter: 50% of Score: Video with the most views. 50% of Score: Committee of Knights select the best video based on the Message and Creativity. State: 100% of Score: Video that is most effective in getting their message out in a creative way. MOVIE (VIDEO) MAKING TIPS Thank you for choosing to produce a video for the Knights of Columbus Video Challenge! We know that it might seem intimidating to produce a quality video to submit for this challenge, but fear not! We are not judging your video on production value, but rather, on 1) Message, and 2) Creativity. What does that mean? Well, it means that we re not expecting you to create the next Hollywood Feature Film! Your video might be a little rough around the edges and that s okay. As you plan your video, keep these two items in mind: MESSAGE: After a person views your video, what do you want them to have learned? What will they be able to take away from your video and be able to communicate to someone else? CREATIVITY: To get your message to your audience, how will you make use of props, location, lighting, words on the screen, music, other actors, etc? Use your creativity to make a video that s unique enough to capture your viewer s attention. Okay, so HOW do you make a video? 1. Choose your Message what you want to say. 2. Draw out a Story Board and include your Script. This is a time-line plan for what will be said, heard and shown. This can include talking, music, sound effects, visuals, etc. Keep in mind that your video must be at least 15 seconds long, but no longer than 60 seconds. 3. Test your message by sharing your story board with some friends or family members. See if they get the point. If they don t get it, you may need to start over. 4. Gather your team, actors, helpers, etc. Make sure each person knows they will be on a public YouTube video. Parents of minor actors should give their permission before you film them. 5. Use a digital video camera, phone or tablet to video record your scenes. 6. Download the files to your computer or tablet. 7. Use a video editing program or app to edit your movie. On Windows, look for Movie Maker. On Mac, look for imovie. Or use another favorite app. 8. Export your video and then upload it to YouTube. Make sure you ve set it to Public.

19 Tips 9. Copy the video s URL / web address and paste it into the Video Challenge Entry Form, which is online at If possible, use an external microphone that s connected to the camera. This will make speech more clearly understood. Try not to face the camera toward bright light like the sun or a bright lamp. This causes your subject to become a silhouette. Don t use music, pictures or videos that you don t have the rights to use. YouTube might shut down your video and you might be disqualified. Try to get the viewers attention early on, with something exciting, unique, interesting, or different. At the end of the movie, try to say or show something that relates to the introduction. This helps the movie come full circle for the viewer. If you have a lot of time or are having a lot of fun, make multiple videos, then choose your favorite to submit. Share, share, share! When your video is online be sure to share it with as many people as possible, and encourage them to LIKE your video. We will multiple the number of views times the number of likes, to determine your final score. If a video is viewed 100 times and has 4 "likes" the total score will be 400. John Bertrand, State Chairman: : jdbertrand@san.rr.com VOCATION AWARENESS VIDEO CHALLENGE ENTRY FORM I wish to enter the Knights of Columbus Vocation Awareness Video Challenge in the age and theme checked below.
