1 1 Sunday, April 29, th Sunday of Easter CONSIDER REGISTERING FOR THE CATHOLIC BIBLE INSTITUTE! Consider participating in the threeyear Catholic Bible Institute, which will be hosted here at OMOS on behalf of the Diocese of Tucson. The Institute on the third Saturday of each month (9am-4pm), beginning in August, will offer an in-depth study of the Bible. The first year will focus on the New Testament, the second year on the Old Testament, and the third year is for facilitators who would lead Bible study groups in the parish. More specific information for parishioners will be available in upcoming bulletins. Register Today! Can we have a Bible study? is one of the most frequently asked questions at the parishes in the Diocese of Tucson. The response to this question varies from parish to parish depending on the local resources and programs that the parish can provide. There are adult Bible study programs available from Catholic sources, but they usually require a well-prepared leader or facilitator. The programs vary in their scope, but in general, they each provide ways in which people can read the Bible and make some practical applications of it to their lives. Reading the Bible and using Scripture in our daily prayer is one of the gifts we have received from the Second Vatican Council, yet finding reliable ways to encourage using the Bible and programs that work for each parish is a challenge. In response to this challenge, the Diocese is continuing a three-year study program entitled the Catholic Bible Institute of Southern Arizona (CBISA). This is the second time this kind of program is being offered in the Diocese. Based on the work of Jesuit Father Felix Just, Ph.D., this three-year program is a comprehensive study of the Sacred Scriptures with a focus on methods of Biblical study, sharing and praying with the Scripture, and application of skills in Bible study leadership. Year One includes an introduction to the New Testament, with study of the four Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Pauline letter, the Catholic Epistles, Book of Revelation, non-canonical writings, and an understanding of New Testament theology. Year Two includes an overview of the Hebrew Scriptures, with study of the Pentateuch/Torah, historical books, prophetic writings, wisdom literature, deuteron-canonical writings, and Hebrew theology. Year Three focuses on developing practical skills for working with small groups, with an emphasis on adult learning, facilitation skills, group process, Bible study resources, and leadership training. The goal of the program is to assist those who participate to grow in understanding and appreciation of the revealed Word of God, to learn the principles of Catholic interpretation of the Sacred Scripture, to integrate Bible study with Christian prayer and daily living, and to receive training for parish-based Bible study leadership. The Catholic Bible Institute of Southern Arizona will run a total of six semesters, beginning in August Sessions take place one Saturday each month, from 8:30am to 4pm at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish. The cost is $300 per year. The CBISA is co-sponsored by the Loyola Institute for Spirituality and the Office of Pastoral Services of the Diocese of Tucson. Participants will receive certification credit from the Diocese of Tucson. THREE UPCOMING PARISH INFORMATOIN SESSIONS ON THE CBI: The first and second sessions will be held on Saturday, May 5th and 12th after the 8:30am Mass in the PAC Auditorium. The third session will be on Tuesday evening May 15th at 7:00pm in the PAC Auditorium. A MAN OF HIS WORD POPE FRANCIS MOVIE: The movie opened nationwide on April 18th. The movie is co-produced by Vatican Office of Communications. The Vatican wanted to make film that was not about Pope Francis, but was rather from Pope Francis, directly addressing the audience as if sitting face to face with him. Everyone acknowledges that Pope Francis acts with meaning and purpose. He does it with his gaze, his gestures, his attitudes and teachings and this film showcases all of them. The movie is made for Catholics and non-catholics alike. It conveys that God loves each one of us unconditionally no matter what our color or creed and we are called to love each other. And to love the world that God has entrusted to us.

2 2 PARISH PRIEST CHANGES: Bishop Weisenburger is appointing Deacon Thomas Quirk who will be ordained to the priesthood in early June for his first assignment here at Our Mother of Sorrows parish. A profile of Deacon Thomas Quirk appears on page 24 of the May issue of Catholic Outlook. Bishop Weisenburger has alerted Fr. Richard Awange towards a new assignment within the diocese in August. Fr. Richard has been very engaged and available for priestly ministry during these past two years of his presence among us. More specifics on these assignments will be forthcoming. PARISH 60TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR DRAWS NEAR: At all our weekend Masses on May 12-13, our parish will usher in its 60th anniversary year. The 60th Anniversary Committee has been meeting on a monthly basis for the past several months planning a series of observances throughout the anniversary year itself. A brochure outlining anniversary year events will be made available to parishioners during the month of May. Phase One of the 3R s Projects Renewal within the Church Space: will take place from mid-may to mid-august in the church. Daily and weekend Masses will be celebrated in the original church of the parish the parish hall beginning on May 17th and will continue until mid-august. It is estimated that the Three R s renewal projects will take a minimum of three months to complete. During these three months, the regular weekly exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be located in the Choir Room in the southwest corner of the parish hall. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS (MID-MAY TO MID-AUGUST): Because of the extensive renewal projects taking place in the church space during the summer months, the weekly exposition will be relocated from the Cenacle Chapel to its own special designated space at the southwest corner of the parish hall (Choir/Music Room). The door to the space has a handicap ramp and will be secured at all times by a keypad on the door. The combination to the keypad will be made available to Eucharistic Adorers in early May. All our weekday and weekend Masses will take place in the hall space (our original church of the parish) on May 17 to mid- August. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the regular weekly schedule in its new designated space during the three month period of time. I am hopeful that the relocation of the Exposition space during this period of time will not change your weekly practice of Adoration and prayer in the presence of the exposed Sacrament. Let s continue to draw close to the Lord during exposition times and be joyful in His companionship. The image of the vine expresses the heart of Christian spirituality in John s Gospel. His disciples and the risen Jesus remain connected. Disciples live in Jesus, who is risen and alive in us. The Sundays of Easter explore the persisting friendship between the risen Jesus and his disciples. Friendship with Jesus lasts into His risen life. The risen Jesus is at home in his disciples and they are at home with him. The Christian community has grown over the centuries and throughout the globe, yet all of us Christians live from a common source and on a single vine. The vine is Jesus, who embodies divine love among us. The vine is an image of the communion of saints, living and dead, all of us who live in Jesus love and share God s life as he does. Leading Like Jesus Seminar Saturday, May 5, 8:30am Mass 3pm. Through the day-long seminar you will learn to redefine relationships with your family, your peers, your co-workers, and complete strangers from a Catholic perspective. FRIENDSHIP: A Bible Sharing from Life Application Bible Studies Tuesdays, May 8 June 11, 7-8:30pm PAC Retreat Rm This is a six week Bible sharing on the qualities of a true friend. This Bible series will not only challenge you it will change you! Truly caring friendships seem rare today. That is because so few people understand what it means to be a good friend. This series will encourage you to begin developing qualities that will make you a good friend to others. You will also learn how to recognize and overcome barriers to friendship. We will begin by developing the foundational qualities of friendship and show what Scripture says is the proper motivation for developing lasting friendships.
