1 1 Sunday, October 14, Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time FIESTA 40 A GREAT GATHERING AND CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY: Our deepest gratitude to the many many loving hearts and hands for planning and presenting Fiesta 40 as a grand gathering and celebration of community. Thanks in particular to RJ Saavedra and her family and all the members of the core committee who planned this annual event over the period of many months and all who took time off from work during fiesta week to set up the fiesta environment on the school field. The output of energy and hard work in setting up the field and then dismantling the field in the days after the fiesta is an amazing gift of servant leadership to our parish and school communities. Special thanks to Laura Stehle and to all who were involved with her in setting up the White Elephant environment in the hall and staffing it during the fiesta days. The collaborative community effort is surely the big contributing highlight which makes our annual fiesta such a grand gathering and celebration of community. The inclement and uncertain weather on the final evening of the fiesta did not dampen the spirits of those who were staffing the fiesta and those who participated fully in the final evening. Our loving God of all community gatherings has continued to bless us as a fiesta/celebrating community in His name. FIESTA 2018-AN AMAZING SUCCESS: Our special thanks to the chair of Fiesta RJ Saavedra and her family the members of the core committee...rj and Eddie Saavedra, Isabel Georgelos, Steve Contreras, Cindy Phillips, Scott and Sharon Speet, Cheryl Rosano, Pam Coonan, Robert and Lee Ezrre, Aida Samuel, Mary Babicke, AnnaLiza Sala and daughters, Laura Stehle and the White Elephant Team, Melinda and David Caballero and the Bingo team, Patsy Klein, Alicia Reyes, Maggie Medina, Jose Merino, Martin and Patricia Mendez, Brenda and Paul Carrillo, Hector Acosta and the Security team, Mary Beth and Michael Tucker, Lara and Hector Acosta, and Rudy Martinez, lead setup and electrician. Fiesta Prize Winners: The following parishioners were lucky enough to have their names drawn for a prize at the Fiesta raffle: 1st prize $2000 Lorie Scott, 2nd prize $1000 Glenda Roark, 3rd prize $500 Santi Rangel, 4th prize $100 Veronica Lawson, 5th prize $100 Trisha Dunn, 6th prize $100 Michaela Carpenter, 7th prize $100 Anne Marie King, 8th prize $100 Maria Quijada. At present, the income and expenditures from the Fiesta are still being tabulated. A fuller reporting on the gross and net income from the Fiesta will be made available as soon as the accounting exercise is complete. HOLISTIC STEWARDSHIP SEASON IS HERE: Holistic Stewardship means that everything we have is a gift, including the gift of creation around us. This means that everything we have... our time, our talent, and our treasure are God given gifts. Once we accept and acknowledge to ourselves that everything we have is a gift entrusted to us by God, then our true response must be one of giving back in thanksgiving. See special Ministry Awareness insert. POPE WANTS ROSARY PRAYED TO PROTECT CHURCH FROM DEVIL S TURBULENCE: In a move suggesting Pope Francis believes the Church is in a moment of spiritual turbulence, the pontiff is asking Catholics around the world to pray the rosary every day during the month of October for protection of the Church from the devil. The daily praying of the rosary during the Marian month of October, a Vatican statement Saturday said, will unite the faithful in communion and penance, as a people of God, in asking the Holy Mother of God and St. Michael the Archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who always aims to divide us from God and among us. Beyond daily praying of the rosary, the pope is also requesting that the faithful add two prayers: An ancient invocation Sub Tuum Praesidium and a prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel who protects and helps fight against evil, according to the Book of Revelations. The Prayers (Sub Tuum Praesidium) Under your protection and with the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, that we be protected and helped in the battle against evil. Prayer to Mary We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God; do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen. Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. ANNUAL CATHOLIC MEN S CONFERENCE: Bishop Weisenburger notes the following The Diocese of Tucson is hosting the Annual Catholic Men s Conference on Saturday, November 3rd from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with registration starting at 8:00 am. It will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. This will be an opportunity for ALL men throughout the diocese to come together as men of faith. All husbands, fathers, grandfathers, single men, sons, grandsons, and nephews are encouraged to attend. My hope as your (Pastor/priest/deacon/fellow parishioner) is that as many men as possible from the parish will register. Mr. Greg Wasinski and Mr. Jesse Romero are two nationally sought-after speakers whose presentations will help explore the scriptural and practical meanings of Iron Sharpens Iron inspiring a spiritual connection to God, family and community. You can register in advance online at I hope many of our men will take advantage of this unique opportunity to grow in faith.

2 2 EMERGENCY SHELTER: Our Parish Hall has become an emergency shelter Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this week for approximately forty people who are being released from detention. This hospitality reach-out is overseen by the American Red Cross, Catholic Community Services and a host of volunteers with loving hearts to serve. Our Mother of Sorrows Parish is a among a number of churches responding to this critical emergency need to accommodate brothers and sisters who are in an hour of great need. Jesus tells us as we reach out in His name to the least among us, we are reaching out to Him. May we be blessed in accommodating these special guests and may they be a blessing upon us. LECTIO DIVINA PRAYING WITH THE SCRIPTURES: On this Monday evening, October 15th, I will facilitate a How to pray with the Scriptures process for beginners at 7pm in the Daily Chapel. God s Word is a deep source of prayer and is alive, active, and effective in transforming our lives when we engage in its prayerful reading and meditation leading us to prayer and contemplation. When we set aside quality time to do this with an open and seeking heart, God speaks to us through the power of his Word. This evening session for beginners will help participants discover and enjoy the simple, yet powerful beauty of Lectio Divina divine reading of Sacred Scripture. Approximately 90 minutes. Scripture Reflection Twenty-eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Wisdom 7:7-11; Hebrews 4:12-13; Mark 10:17-30 October 14, 2018 The Word of God is living and effective. What else really needs to be said? Pray, and prudence and wisdom will be given to you. As Jesus told the young man, wealth won t get you into heaven. I know there s a song that says you can buy a stairway to heaven, but God scattered the people who were trying to build a tower to reach heaven. No, you can t buy your way into heaven. Jesus loved the young man because He knew the young man was trying to follow God s laws. But you have to love your neighbor and help them. Selling what he had and giving the money to the poor would have helped them and helped the young man at the same time. How? It would have let him help identify what his priorities were. The disciples had already identified theirs. They had given up everything to follow Jesus. They were going to face persecutions. Have you identified your priorities? Have you given up things to follow Jesus? Have you faced persecutions? Pray for those who are facing persecution now to follow Jesus. It is now illegal in China to be Christian. Pray for those fleeing Central America to keep their children from being enslaved by the government or drug lords. Pray for yourselves to put Jesus first in your life. He put you first in His. DID YOU KNOW... Did you know? Christianity is one of the most persecuted religious groups in the world? Every month: 255 Christians are killed 104 are abducted 180 Christian women are raped, sexually harassed or forced into marriage 66 churches are attacked 160 Christians are detained without trial and imprisoned According to ADULT FAITH FORMATION CALENDAR FOR THE MONTH October Ignatian Silent Retreat 13 Parish Rosary Celebration 15 Praying with the Scriptures Lectio Divina 17 Blessed are the Peacemakers Video Meditation 20 Diocesan Rosary Celebration Ministry Awareness Weekend 21 To Rest in Peace Forum 23/24 Introduction to the Bible

All the voices heard in this film are of bishops and priests--including Pope Benedict XVI--who participated in Vatican II and who, in most cases, have played important roles in the life of the Catholic Church over the subsequent decades.
