1 1 Sunday, November 13, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time DIOCESAN-WIDE COLLECTION IN ALL PARISHES FOR OUR PARISH S HAITI PROJECT NEXT WEEKEND: Next Sunday the Feast of Christ Our King will conclude the Holy Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. Bishop Kicanas is inviting all parishes to receive special collection at all Masses next weekend for our parish Haiti Project and its minister, Joan Martin. This diocesanwide action will be reaching out in mercy to the least among us in the Diocese of Port-de-Paix in Haiti. Hurricane Matthew and its aftereffects were recently compounded by three days of torrential rain in the region where Joan Martin ministers on our behalf. Our contribution as a sponsoring parish to the second collection will be hopefully matched many times over by Bishop Kicanas diocesan-wide appeal through all parishes embracing this mercy outlet. THE END IS COMING: We do not know when God knows. As we come to the end of another liturgical year, the readings from this thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time, alert us to the fact that life as we know it and the world as we know it will come to an end. However, it is not all bad news. This Sunday s Gospel reading offers hope and future in the second coming of Christ. Every time we pray our creed we remind ourselves of this reality when we pray, I believe He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Even in the midst of so much suffering around the world and harm done to creation and the environment, God s Word continues to be living and effective and alive and active in us. As we are forewarned of the end times, as people of faith and hope, we must give thanks for the living Word of God which empowers us in the meantime to respect God s gift of Creation and to build a world of justice, love and peace. We all have different levels of denial that life as we know it and the world as we know it is really in transition. We are on a journey of transformation and transfiguration through God s amazing grace to glory in the new creation. The heart of our call on our pilgrim journey to glory is summarized in the opening prayer of this Sunday s Mass in the following, simple way Grant us, we pray, O Lord our God, the constant gladness of being devoted to you, for it is full and lasting happiness to serve with constancy the author of all that is good. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Prayer After An Election Lord, as we end the election cycle And look ahead to a new administration, We pray for healing and wholeness for our nation. Our bonds of community must be repaired and restored. Our willingness to listen to one another must be strengthened. Our respect for every member of our society must be revived. May we move forward with hope, May we move forward with faith, May we move forward with compassion and love. All this we ask in faith through Christ Our Lord. Amen. -Excerpted from Jane Deren, Ph.D. Copyright 2016 Education for Justice, a project of Center of Concern THANKSGIVING 2016: You are invited and encouraged to celebrate with your parish family this Thanksgiving Day, November 24th at the 9:00am Mass. As we have done for the past few years, each family is invited to bring a loaf of bread for donation to the poor and place it on the table in front of the sanctuary prior to the Thanksgiving Mass. Bringing a loaf of bread in thanksgiving from one family s table to another s table that will nourish the homeless and needy, if done in the spirit of true love and thanksgiving, will be a fulfillment of the Gospel call of Jesus as often as you do it for the least of these, you do it for me. Thanksgiving Dinner: OMOS is again sponsoring a Thanksgiving dinner for parishioners who find themselves alone on the holiday. Any individual, couple or family is welcome. Many have family who are scattered throughout the country and are unable to join them. Many have no family at all, so this invitation is for you. If you would like to join us for Thanksgiving fellowship, please call the Parish office at and leave your name and telephone number. You will receive a confirmation call to give you the time and place. Hope to see you there. DECEMBER 3RD PILGRIMAGE OF MERCY TO OUR LADY QUEEN OF ANGELS ORPHANAGE IN AGUA PRIETA: The Tucson Chapter of the Blessed Nuno Society, home-based here at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, is sponsoring an all-day pilgrimage to Our Lady Queen of Angels Orphanage in Agua Prieta on Saturday, December 3rd. Carl Sylvester, Executive Director, will lead the one-day pilgrimage. Participants will be helping bring supplies provided by the Society to the orphanage. The onsite visit to the orphanage, now housing almost 40 orphans, will give a hands-on prayerful experience of reaching out to the most vulnerable among us, the homeless orphans at the orphanage. Parishioner pilgrims will need to have a valid passport. The carpool/motorcade will depart from the parish parking lot after a 7:15am Mass on Saturday, December 3rd returning by 8pm on that Saturday evening. Pilgrim cars will be parked on the Douglas side of the border and the pilgrim group will walk across the border and board a bus for the 5-minute ride to the pilgrim site in Agua Prieta. There is no cost, but a freewill offering to offset the cost of the Mexican bus and to assist the orphanage will be collected at the orphanage. Pilgrims are responsible for paying for their own lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Parishioners interested in this pilgrimage are asked to contact Rocio at the parish office at or rzamora@omosparish.org.

2 YES, LORD UPDATE 2 ANNUAL RENEWAL OF PLEDGE/TITHE COMMITMENT TIME: We are now in the second week of our annual renewal of the Yes, Lord pledge/tithe. Thanks to all who returned their completed commitment pledge/tithe cards this weekend. These first weekends of November give an extended opportunity to all parishioners to participate in this annual exercise. Completed commitment pledge/tithe cards can be mailed to the parish or dropped into the collection next weekend. PULPIT WITNESSES: Thanks to the following parishioners for sharing a personal witness: It is very important to me to offer my tithing, for when I tithe, I give the Lord not only the fruits of my labor but also a portion to the Lord in support of our parish and community. It is only right that I tithe in honor of my love for God and His tender mercy to me. I set aside 10% of my income to give to others as first fruits of my labor; 5% for our parish and 5% within our community. I feel blessed watching others being helped and humbled that God works through me to help others. - Maggie Medina Like many of you, I am still striving toward the practice of the 10% tithe ideal 5% towards our parish and 5% toward other charities. My weekly financial support of the parish is important to me for so many reasons. I recognize as a parent and a wife, a 10% tithe is not always a possibility while raising children and paying bills. I am sensitive to the fact that not everyone can commit to a 10% tithe. However, I continue to strive towards the goal and I know many of you do, too. I am grateful for this annual opportunity to receive and renew may own annual pledge to the parish. My husband and I will continue to do our best toward the tithing ideal. Each one of us here today is so blessed to be part of such an active parish. Without your weekly offertory, our very active parish would not be able to continue to grow. - Nichole Pelan SACRIFICIAL GIVING TOWARD THE IDEAL OF THE TITHE: Sacrificial giving, for many of our parishioners, is from substance rather than surplus. Many use the practice of the tithe, that is 10% of gross annual income 5% toward the parish and another 5% toward other charities (Annual Catholic Appeal, CTSO, Haiti, second collections, etc). Our parish Stewardship & Development Council members holds up and promotes the ideal of the 10% tithe to our parishioners. ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER (EFT): Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) is the established process of more and more of our parishioners in their planned tithing practices. Currently more than 332 parishioners use EFT to fulfill their tithe/pledge to the parish. The EFT process is a very simple and consistent process for parishioners to fulfill their regular giving pattern to the parish. Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection November 13, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 21:5-19 As Sunday s Gospel passage begins, people admire the stones and adornments of the temple. Jesus, the cornerstone of a new community, stands in this scene before a magnificent, 500-year-old building no one could have imagined would be gone. At the time Luke writes, Jesus prophetic words have come true. This testifies to the truth of the four rules/guides in Sunday s gospel that tell us how to survive such profound upheavals as the loss of a long-standing center of worship and life. The rules/guides are: 1) Don t stray, 2) Don t panic, 3) Give witness, 4) Endure. First, when people say, I am he (the messiah). I know when the end will be, don t go after them. Keep faith in Jesus. Second, when you hear of war and tumult, Jesus says, don t be terrified. These things will happen. They are not the end. Third, the worse, expect persecution. Expect that what happened to Jesus himself can happen to followers. A time of persecution will be a time to bear witness. In that time, Jesus promises to put words in his followers mouths. Fourth, and worse than persecution, Jesus tells his followers to expect parents, family, and friends to betray them and have them put to death. Here Luke has Jesus explaining how Christians in the 80s are to live as they face betrayal, even from other Jews and kin. Endure in faith is Luke s ethic for the time between Jesus first and second comings. ***What are your personal rules/guides? Mornings of Reflection Leading Us Through Advent: Monday s November 21, 28 & December 5 & 12 from 9:30-11:30am. This is a unique approach to rosary devotion, exploring rosary mysteries as they appear within the Eucharistic Mass. All 20 mysteries of the rosary are considered, with each mystery offering suggestions to help deepen our awareness of Christ s love. What a spiritual way to usher in Christmas. Facilitated by Mary Chajewski. PAC Retreat Room. No fee, but please register with the parish office. RITE OF ACCEPTANCE & RITE OF WELCOME This Sunday, November 13, at the 9am Mass we celebrated the Rite of Acceptance of 18 inquirers into the order of Catechumens (9 adults and 9 children) and the Rite of Welcoming for 5 baptized adults who are preparing for reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church. The prerequisite for making this first step is that the beginnings of the spiritual life and the fundamentals of Christian teaching have taken root in the candidates that you see Christ is alive in them. During this Rite, they publicly expressed their desire to the Church. It is now our responsibility as Church to pray for these catechumens and candidates as they continue to study in anticipation of the Easter Vigil and full communion into the Catholic Church. Adult Confirmation On Saturday, November 19th, at the 5:30pm Mass, we will celebrate 16 adults finishing their full initiation to the Catholic Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Three of these candidates will also receive their First Holy Communion. Please pray for all these as we welcome them with a great AMEN.
