1 1 Sunday, March 5, First Sunday of Lent LENT, OUR ANNUAL SPIRITUAL BOOT CAMP: Be Reconciled to God (2 Cor 5:20)...Our Lenten season each year can be likened to a spiritual boot camp. We are given the opportunity to strengthen our spiritual muscle through a more deliberate effort in the exercise of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is a time to build up our spiritual reserves, for love of God and neighbor, through dying to our selfish, self-centered ways. Lent leads us to renew our Baptismal promises at Easter so that the Risen Christ may possess us more fully and more deeply in our everyday living. In church language this spiritual boot camp is a time of deeper conversion of heart, preparing us to fight all spiritual battles. The Season of Lent is the Greatest Renewal Season in the Church s year. It is a call and a challenge to all of us to die to sinful ways so that the resurrected life of Christ may flourish more fully in us at Easter. It is a time when we voluntarily enter into dying and death to our own selfishness through the penitential practices of Lent - prayer, fasting and almsgiving (PFA) Prayer of course is not really penance. Rather, it is an expression of our relationship with the Lord, our response to God s in-braking, a way we build up, sustain and repair our relationship to God. Prayer enables us to look long and hard at who God is. Steady sustained prayer, both by individuals and by communities, keeps us on the path to God. Home sacred places - prayer corners/shrines, are reminders beckoning us to prayer and to encounter the holy in the ministry of everyday life. Fasting is far more than giving up food. It is a conviction that is quickened brought to life by careful following of the call to return to the Lord. It is an un-cluttering that helps us to re-order our lives. We fast to rid ourselves of those things that diminish our presence and consciousness of others in the world. Fasting empties us out so that we can open ourselves up to others and to God. Fasting also connects us to active concern for justice to the poor, enabling us to have something to share with our sisters and brothers who are denied their just share of the world s goods. Fasting creates room within; room to be filled up with the hunger and thirst for God and those who share our planet. Almsgiving reminds us that the pilgrimage to the pasch (The death and resurrection of the Lord) is a conversion pilgrimage, and that conversion is both vertical and horizontal. It is vertical because it leads us to reunion with the Lord. It is also horizontal, for it demands that we reach out to our brothers and sisters in need along the way to the Lord. Almsgiving guides individuals to reach out with time, talent, and treasure. More than that, almsgiving guides communities to work to change any and all structures or institutions that cause or perpetuate oppression and injustice. Almsgiving makes our prayer more than empty words and our fasting more than superficial self-improvement. Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving three avenues interconnected to pave our way to Easter. Let s follow them. THANKS TO SABINO CANYON CONSTRUCTION GROUP: A big thanks to Mariano Cardenas, owner of the construction group, for replacing thirteen sections of the placita area between the church and the parish offices. Mariano is one of the volunteers belonging to the Saturday morning volunteer maintenance group. Thanks, Mariano, for donating your time and the time of your family, crew and materials in replacing the thirteen cracked sections needing attention. The spirit of your service is very reflective of your love for the church and for the parish community of Our Mother of Sorrows Parish. NEXT SATURDAY MARCH 11TH PILGRIMAGE OF MERCY TO OUR LADY QUEEN OF ANGELS ORPHANAGE IN AGUA PRIETA: The Tucson Chapter of the Blessed Nuno Society, home-based here at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, is sponsoring an all-day pilgrimage to Our Lady Queen of Angels Orphanage in Agua Prieta on Saturday, March 11th. Carl Sylvester, Executive Director, will lead the one-day pilgrimage. Participants will be helping bring supplies provided by the Society to the orphanage. The onsite visit to the orphanage, now housing almost 30 orphans, will give a hands -on prayerful experience of reaching out to the most vulnerable among us, the homeless orphans at the orphanage. Parishioner pilgrims will need to have a valid passport. The carpool/motorcade will depart from the parish parking lot after a 7:15am Mass on Saturday, March 11th returning by 8pm on that Saturday evening. Pilgrim cars will be parked on the Douglas side of the border and the pilgrim group will walk across the border and board a bus for the 5-minute ride to the pilgrim site in Agua Prieta. There is no cost, but a freewill offering to offset the cost of the bus and to assist the orphanage will be collected at the orphanage. Pilgrims are responsible for paying for their own lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Interested parishioners are asked to contact Rocio at the parish office at or rzamora@omosparish.org. PARISH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE % TOWARDS GOAL: As of this Wednesday, March 1, eighty families have pledged $325,855 to the campaign. That represents 38.3% towards the goal more than one-third of the way. Our deepest thanks to the families that have made a three-year pledge. While we accept any and all gifts to the campaign it is important to remember that pledging over a three year period allows families to give a little more than they might otherwise be capable of giving with a one-time gift. Pledging also gives us a better chance of reaching our campaign goal. A pledge is not a binding contract but rather a promise made in good faith. If circumstances were to change and you are unable to fulfill your pledge, all we ask is that you notify us. Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2 Corinthians 9:6

2 Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection March 5, 2017 First Sunday of Lent Matthew 4:1-11 The devil in this story reports popular thinking what the polls show people want. The devil describes a messiah who is an all-powerful warrior king with an angel army, a vindicator of apocalyptic proportions. This king will make Israel a nation among nations again. Even Jesus closest disciples share these expectations. When Jesus does not fulfill these expectations, most of His friends abandon Him to a criminal s death on the cross. His crucifixion argues He is not the messiah from God. A crucified messiah is a contradiction. Why does the Gospel asks us to examine the God we worship? Perhaps our God inspires success and personal gain more than service. Perhaps we blame God for letting bad things happen to good people. Not Jesus,; He refuses to put God to the test. He worships God alone, the first commandment, and lives by God s word. ***What images of God have you found false and left behind in your life? What images do you hold fast? Are you looking for a closer relationship with God? Would you like to embark on a journey of love as a Third Order Carmelite? Do you feel called to live your baptismal vows more fully? A Morning of Reflection & Discernment Hosted by THIRD ORDER CARMELITES OF THE SACRED HEART Theme: Date: Place: MY VOCATION IS LOVE Saturday, March 11th, 9am to 12pm Parish Activity Center - Scout Room DID YOU KNOW Abstaining from meat on Fridays is a practice that reinforces self-sacrifice and discipline, while reminding Catholics of how Christ sacrificed his own flesh on Good Friday. THIS SUNDAY at the 9am Mass was the Rite of Election and Rite of Sending for the RCIA Catechumen s and Candidates. Usually on the First Sunday of Lent, the parish and diocesan community affirm the catechumen s readiness for baptism. The catechumens sign their names in the Book of Elect and then in the afternoon they are presented to Bishop Kicanas at the Cathedral. We also celebrate the Rite of Welcome, where the candidates for Profession of Faith are welcomed. Then in the name of all the People of God, the Bishop calls them all by name and invites them to proceed to the Easter sacraments of initiation. With prayers of support from the entire congregation, the catechumens and candidates now begin the last and most intensive weeks of their road to full initiation into the church. Praying with Lectio Divina as a group -- Wednesday evenings starting at 6:45 in the PAC Retreat Room. You have attended a how to pray with the Scriptures and now where to you find a group to share with? Looking for ways to boost your prayer life? Interested in deepening your relationship with God? Join us for Lectio Divina, also known as praying the Scriptures, on Wednesday nights at 6:45 in the PAC Retreat Room. During Lectio Divina, our small faith sharing group will read, listen, contemplate and respond to the Gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday as we ponder what God is saying to us in this living dialogue. No biblical expertise is required. Come and let the Word of God transform you! No registration necessary. RCIA RETREAT In preparation of the Rites leading to the Easter Vigil, the participants attended an all day retreat on February 25. Part of the day consisted of making a rosary out of cupcakes and praying the rosary as they assembled it. 2 For registration information, contact Sylvia Mayer-Martinez at (520) or CalledtoCarmel@outlook.com The Knights of Columbus Regina Cleri Council # 5133 is inviting parishioners of Our Mother of Sorrows to join in a prayerful afternoon this Sunday, March 5th. Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Rosary crusade prayer will be hosted by Alan and Marion Walby at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish Hall. Prayers will start at 3pm. Bring your favorite dish to share for a small gathering after the prayers.

Find a jar to collect change. A limited number of jars with labels are available at the doors of the church, along with the Haiti Prayer. Extra labels are also available for you to use on your own jar or plastic bag. 2. At dinner read the Haiti Prayer or pray for the people in Haiti during your prayer before meals. 3. Add change to your jar each day. 4. On the weekend of Palm Sunday, April 8th & 9th bring your jars of change or envelope marked Haiti to church and put it in the Haiti baskets on the steps in front of the altar before or after Mass.
