1 1 Sunday, November 18, Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time REFELCTION FOR THANKSGIVING WEEK: Three thousand years ago the Jews formulated blessings berakoth for every circumstance of their lives. Come weal or woe, they had a blessing. If it were good news, then "Blessed be he who is good and does good." If it were bad news, then "Blessed be the judge of truth." As far as they were concerned, humankind had a duty to pronounce a blessing on the bad in life as well as the good, because all life came from God. "It is forbidden," says the Talmud, "to taste of this world without a blessing." But that is not news, is it? Not to anyone who has broken bread and lifted the cup at this altar, where we give thanks for the life, and death, and life of Jesus Christ. We do not bless the good parts here and curse the rest. No, whenever we gather for eucharist, for thanksgiving, what we toast is the whole of our Lord's life, the defeats along with the victories, the gentle birth alongside the violent crucifixion, the sleepless night in Gethsemane alongside the empty tomb on Easter morning. Because in retrospect, in faith, we believe that it is all a single tapestry and the removal of a single thread diminishes the whole creation. Our challenge this Thanksgiving is to see our own lives the same way, to learn how to give thanks at this altar not only for the mixed blessings of Christ's life but also for our own, to say "thank you" for the whole mess, the things we welcome as well as the things we would risk our souls to escape. -Barbara Brown Taylor, Mixed Blessings, a best-selling author, professor, and Episcopal priest THANKSGIVING 2018: You are invited and encouraged to celebrate with your parish family this Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd at the 9:00am Mass. As we have done for the past few years, each family is invited to bring a loaf of bread for donation to the poor and place it on the table in front of the sanctuary prior to the Thanksgiving Mass. Bringing a loaf of bread in thanksgiving from one family s table to another s table that will nourish the homeless and needy, if done in the spirit of true love and thanksgiving, will be a fulfillment of the Gospel call of Jesus as often as you do it for the least of these, you do it for me. JOHN CAHALANE CALLED HOME BY THE LORD: My older brother John was called home by the Lord on Sunday evening, November 11th. It was a privilege and time of painful grace to celebrate Mass in his hospital room with family each day prior to the Lord s call. His heartful signing embraced the Mass hymns up to the final day. My family and I are grateful for the prayers and support of parishioners during this time of painful grace. I plan to offer the 6:30pm Wednesday evening Mass as a Memorial Mass for John on November 28th. YES, LORD TITHE/STEWARDSHIP GIVING: Our deepest gratitude to many of our parishioners who have responded to the annual Yes, Lord appeal and to many others who continue to respond. A large number of respondents have increased their giving. One parishioner family made the following notation on their completed pledge, we are blessed to be able to increase our pledge more this year. A big number of respondents are also maintaining their giving level. A small number are noting a decrease because of fixed incomes or difficult financial circumstances. Collectively the Yes, Lord season each year is a time of renewed blessings on our parish community. Again, our deepest gratitude to all who sustain our parish s mission and its ministries. THE END IS COMING: We do not know when God knows. As we come to the end of another liturgical year, the readings from this Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time, alert us to the fact that life as we know it and the world as we know it will come to an end. However, it is not all bad news. This Sunday s Gospel reading offers hope and future in the second coming of Christ. Every time we pray our creed we remind ourselves of this reality when we pray, I believe He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Even in the midst of so much suffering around the world and harm done to creation and the environment, God s Word continues to be living and effective and alive and active in us. As we are forewarned of the end times, as people of faith and hope, we must give thanks for the living Word of God which empowers us in the meantime to respect God s gift of Creation and to build a world of justice, love and peace. EASTSIDE CATHOLIC MAGAZINE: The Pastor s Monthly Update is being replaced with a monthly parish magazine entitled Eastside Catholic. It is being published by Decided Excellence Catholic Media and is being underwritten by advertising sponsorships. The magazine will have significant local parish content and some timely evangelization articles. The new magazine is scheduled to appear in our parishioner mailboxes at the end of the first week of December. DECEMBER 8TH PILGRIMAGE DAY TO OUR LADY QUEEN OF ANGELS ORPHANAGE IN AGUA PRIETA: The Arizona chapter of the Blessed Nuno Society, home-based here at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, is sponsoring an all-day pilgrimage to Our Lady Queen of Angels Orphanage in Agua Prieta on Saturday, December 8th. Rocio Zamora will lead the one-day pilgrimage. The onsite visit to the orphanage will give a hands-on prayerful experience of reaching out to the most vulnerable among us, the homeless orphans at the orphanage. Parishioner pilgrims need to have a valid passport. The carpool will depart from the parish at 8am on Saturday, December 8th and return by 8pm that evening. Cars will be parked on the Douglas side of the border and the pilgrim group will walk across the border and board a bus for the 5-minute ride to the pilgrim site in Agua Prieta. There is no cost, but a freewill offering to offset the cost of the Mexican bus and to assist the orphanage will be collected at the orphanage. Pilgrims are responsible for paying for their own lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Interested parishioners may contact Rocio at the parish office. PARISH KINO MISSIONS TOUR: More than 300 years ago, a tireless Jesuit priest by the name of Eusebio Francisco Kino made countless forays on horseback toward much of what is now the Northern Mexican state of Sonora and Arizona. Fr. Kino brought with him ideas in material culture - chiefly the Christian faith, the Spanish language, cattle, and crops - that would change the region deeply and forever. Join us in retracing the steps of Kino who established the first Mission Dolores in Sonora and the missionaries who followed him. You will be guided on the tour by scholars and enthusiasts who know and love the region and volunteer their time to share it with others. The Mission tour is scheduled for February 26th 28th, A valid U.S. Passport is required of all participants. The bus will leave Tucson on Tuesday morning at 8am and arrive back on Thursday evening around 6-7 o clock. The fee for this tour is $575 per person, double-occupancy ($100 for single supplement). A deposit of $100 is required at registration, and final payment is due February 1, Fuller information and registration forms for the Kino Missions Tour are available at the parish office or in the literature rack in the vestibule of the church. For fuller information, contact Laura Stehle in the parish office at This parish Kino Missions Tour is a special feature of our 60th anniversary year.

2 2 Scripture Reflection Thirty-third Sunday of Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 Daniel 12:1-3, Hebrews 10:11-14, 18, Mark 13:24-32 Boy, these are scary readings, aren t they? Daniel tells at no time in Babylon s history will things be as distressed as what s coming up. But the Israelites, who the angel Michael guards, will be protected. The Israelites were exiled in Babylon at the time. They were being told to do things as the Babylonians did. Those that followed the covenant, the Hebrew laws, will have everlasting life and if they led other people down the right path, they will shine like stars. It wasn t easy for them, but Daniel and his friends did it. Jesus tells His disciples a similar prophesy: at the end times, when He comes in His glory, the people who do the right things, who follow and believe in Him will be gathered up to heaven. Jesus doesn t know when this will happen. Only the Father knows when. That s why we have to be ready at all times. These readings aren t scary to those who follow and believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior. Why not? Because they are vigilant. Because they follow the covenant to love the Lord their God and to love their neighbor. Because we try hard to do what Jesus tells us to do. It s not easy, but isn t eternity worth the effort? Jesus certainly is. DID YOU KNOW... Did you know that the Catholic Church rejects the notion of a secret rapture? This is a recent invention contrary to Scripture. The Catholic Church s official teachings are contained in the Nicene Creed and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC ). The second coming of Christ is associated with the end of the world and the Last Judgment, not with a secret rapture. Christ s Second Coming will be triumphant and ever-lasting. Watch for the Light: Advent Morning of Reflection To help prepare for this season of grace, you are invited to join us for an Advent morning of reflection on Saturday, December 8 at 9:30am at Our Mother of Sorrows. Author, catechist and retreat director, Brother Silas Henderson, SDS, will lead us in a time of prayer and reflection as we consider the great themes of Advent and Christmas in Sacred Scripture, art, and music. All are welcome! Prior to the Morning of Reflection, Mass will be celebrated in the parish church at 8:30, honoring the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A $10 materials fee is requested. coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP by contacting the Jordan Ministry Team office at (520) or JMT@jordanministry.org. 26th ADULT FAITH FORMATION CALENDAR FOR THE MONTH November Praying with the Scriptures Lectio Divina

The Angel Tree is a wonderful way for us as a parish to carry out what we are taught in Catholic Social Teaching. Through the Angel Tree Project we can affirm the dignity of the poor and give them a helping hand. Jesus tells us, Whatever you did for the least of my brothers, you did for me. (Mt 25:40) How can we challenge ourselves to see Christ in the poor and vulnerable this Christmas? There are five kinds of angels this year, with a variety of ways we can reach out to the least among us. St. Vincent de Paul & Project Outreach Red Angels are requesting toys, building sets, balls, books, dolls, craft sets, and games for children from birth to 18 years. (Fry s gift cards, Fast food certificates, and movie tickets for the teenagers are always in short supply.) Haiti Project White Angels are asking for cash donations that will be directed toward Joan Martin and our Haiti outreach project. Queen of Angels Orphanage and Barrio Outreach Yellow Angels are asking for twin sheets, toothbrushes, and Gift Cards. Due to the difficulty in transporting and storing goods for the orphanage, they are asking for Gift Cards for Discount Stores. (Wal-Mart is the discount store at the border and nearest to the orphanage.) Casa Maria, Primavera Shelter, TIHAN, Poverello House, Stand Up for Kids and Sr. Jose Women s Shelter Green Angels are soliciting sweatshirts, hats, gloves, blankets, sleeping bags, toiletries, men s and women s underwear and socks, and children s sweatshirts and jackets. Especially needed men s and women s socks and underwear. (Women prefer low cut socks.) Respect Life Blue Angels are for mothers in need who are helped through agencies such as Reachout Women s Center. These angels solicit diapers, formula, baby clothing, bottles, and blankets. Especially needed are certificates to be used at discount stores (ie.- Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart) and Similac baby formula). Social Service Migration and Refugee Services Purple Angels are asking for items needed by for those entering the country and either setting up a home or moving to other areas. Especially needed are pans, sheets, underwear, socks and towels. Items should not be wrapped and need to be dropped off by December 18th.
