1 1 Sunday, September 25, th Sunday in Ordinary Time DEAR FIESTA GUESTS, Welcome to Our Mother of Sorrows Parish s 38th annual Fiesta Weekend Sept. 30, Oct. 1 & 2! The final segment of the threeday event is next Sunday from 1pm to 8pm. The Fiesta event and its activities attract the young, the old, and all ages in between. The easy informal environment of the Fiesta help all to participate in celebrating the social life of our Parish. Parishioners and school parents active in many networks formed through committees and commissions celebrate the friendships of so many overlapping relationships through the gathering of this weekend. In the language of sociology, the overlapping relationships that form these networks which make up the Parish and school is called social capital. As a Parish we are very blessed with lots of social capital. The Fiesta is a gathering time, the harvest time for celebrating the social capital of the Parish and school. Thanks to RJ Saavedra for her leadership and hard work as the chair of the Fiesta event, the Fiesta Core Committee, White Elephant committee, Laura Stehle, White Elephant Chair, and to all who are staffing the many activities of Fiesta It is indeed a lot of hard work to gather in all the social capital of the Parish and school. Thank you for the gift of your presence with us. Enjoy yourself, celebrate Fiesta, eat, drink and be merry for this is truly Fiesta time! Fiesta Come Let Us Celebrate at the Fiesta Table Our God is a Fiesta God Calling us to celebrate Life and love both human and Divine. He calls us to Fiesta tables of plenty. There He shares the bread of friendship. Come, He says, Let s share this Holy bread At the Fiesta tables of plenty. WOMEN OF OUR MOTHER OF SORROWS PARISH REACHING OUT TO HOMELESS WOMEN: More than 20 of our women parishioners are founding members of Sr. Jose Women s Center. It operated for its first two winters at a church location off 22nd Street close to the freeway. The founding group have established their own 501(c)3, which moves them towards their vision of providing services in a permanent site for homeless and abused women throughout the year at 1050 S. Park Avenue. The Center now operates with volunteers not only from Our Mother of Sorrows, but from different faiths, backgrounds and churches. The following verses are reflective of the vision and purpose of Sr. Jose Women s Center. Sr. Jose Women s Center Sr. Jose s namesake Jose Gave shelter to God s Son Jesus came into our homelessness To bring us into the shelter of His Divinity. Meet me in brother and sister. Celebrate with food, song, dance and story. Know your Fiesta time here Is just a shadow of the eternal Fiesta banquet of plenty. The homeless women s shelter Welcomes Him through servant Marys. They proclaim in loving servant actions Mary s yes Fiat to the angel. Sr. Jose s life was a profound witness To sheltering Jesus In the least among us. Now there is room in the inn. Behold the handmaid of the Lord Let it be done to me according to your word. In their hearts they shelter and ponder the homeless At Sr. Jose s homeless women s shelter. The fifth annual fundraising dinner for Sr. Jose Women s Center will take place at St. Augustine s Catholic High School on Saturday evening, October 15th. $40 tickets to the fundraising dinner are available after all Masses this weekend and at the parish office. 2 MERCY OUTREACH OUR VINCENTIANS: Our parish is very blessed in having 48 active members in our parish St. Vincent de Paul group. The members rotate their merciful loving service in our food pantry six mornings a week and some of them are available for home visitation. Thanks to our entire parish community who sustain the merciful reach out of our St. Vincent de Paul members to those who are most needy. At the 9:00 a.m. Mass this Sunday morning the active St. Vincent de Paul members present were commissioned for their loving service of mercy on behalf of our parish community. The following is a biographical summary of St. Vincent de Paul, the founder of the Vincentians who lived from 1580 to His feast day is this Tuesday, September 27th. St. Vincent de Paul came to a turning point in midlife when he was summoned to hear the confession of a dying peasant. He was struck as never before by the seriousness of his vocation and determined afterward that his priesthood would be dedicated to service of the poor. His spirituality was based on the encounter of Christ in the needs of one s neighbors. As he instructed his priests and sisters, The poor are your masters and you are their servants. He died on September 27, 1660 at the age of eighty. He was later named patron of all charitable societies. 2 Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection September 25, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 16:19-31 Beginning two Sundays back with Jesus parables of the prodigal son and then the unjust manager, the Church hears gospel stories that only Luke tells. Luke presses distinctive themes investing in the poor, forgiving sin and debts, and the importance of prayer. The gospel gives spare but significant details about the rich man s lifestyle. He is not a king or prince, but dresses in the royal color and wears fine linen. A feast is his regular, everyday fare. The story gives the man no name; rather his wealth and comfort define him. Lazarus, on the other hand has a name, but no money or food. He is sick with sores that afflict him. The many poor people panhandling in our cities put Sunday s gospel squarely on our doorsteps. Like the rich man, most of us have poor people at our gates our bus stops, our ATM s, the doorways of our church. Some have burned out every relationship in their lives for alcohol or drugs. Others don t have a stable enough lifestyle to stay on their medications. In small towns, people often know people in need and do what they can for them, though not always. In the cities, poor people become anonymous. Their presence and number can seem menacing to our own wellbeing. ***What assumptions do you make about people who are poor? How do you compare them with yourself? What value have you found in connecting with them? October Calendar 5 How to Pray the Rosary 13 Basic Art Classes start 13 Deadline Registration for Stephen Ministry 14 Learning about Mexican Food/Tortillas 15/16 Ministry Awareness Weekend 17 Rosary Making Workshop 18 New Ministers of the Eucharist Formation 20 Follow Me DVD Series 22 Diocesan Rosary Celebration 22/23 Couples Prayer Retreat Did You Know On February 12, 1931, Vatican Radio was established by Guglielm Marconi and inaugurated by Pope Pius XI. The first signal broadcast in Morse Code was, In nominee Domini. Amen. ( In the name of the Lord. Amen.) Since then, Catholics have been at the forefront of employing modern communications at the service of the Gospel, with the most notable examples in the English-speaking world being Archbishop Fulton Sheen and Mother Mary Angelica. Rosary - Its History - How to Pray the Rosary and its Mysteries: Wednesday, October 5, after the 6:30pm Mass, in the Church. Msgr. Tom will present an hour and a half long session on the history of the rosary within our Catholic practice, and cover the details of how to pray the rosary and how to use the rosary beads in praying the rosary. Some parishioners will share a brief personal witness on their prayer experience in praying the rosary regularly. Rosaries will be made available for participants in the session. The second part of the session will be given over to praying the rosary itself. Parishioners who may have a need on how to pray the rosary and a desire to learn are especially encouraged to participate in this session. The rosary is prayed each day in church after the 8:30am Mass on Monday Saturday. Joy of Love Book Pope Francis Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation: Tuesdays, October 11 November 15. 6:45-7:45pm. Come join us as we go through the book and reflect on a broader vision and a renewed awareness of the importance of marriage and the family. The Joy of Love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church. Christian couples are, for each other, for their children and for their relatives, cooperators of grace and witnesses of the faith. God calls them to bestow life and to care for life. Each of us leaves a mark on the life of others, so let us read and learn together how to make that mark one inspired by God. Facilitated by Pam Coonan. PAC Room 1

Caring relationships last for as long as the need persists. For more information on how to become a Stephen Minister or if you are in need of a Stephen Minister, please contact Patsy Klein, Director of Pastoral Care at (520) or pklein@omosparish.org. Let us Pray to the Lord. ~The Global Catholic Climate Movement The Season of Creation website includes tips to help us reduce our carbon footprint. A few suggestions from the OTHER WAYS category include: use WATER sparingly & less often in cleaning tasks; find climateappropriate plants for garden & yard (install a drip system for irrigation); choose water-efficient shower & faucet heads and appliances such as dishwashers & washing machines. REUSE & RECYCLE by buying used products & reselling or recycling items no longer needed. To reduce the demand for fossil fuels, be an advocate for CLEAN ENERGY SOURCES support alternatives such as wind, solar, geothermal, & specially designed hydroelectric & biomass energy projects.
