1 1 Sunday, April 9, Palm Sunday THE SACRAMENT OF MERCY (RECONCILIATION/CONFESSION): We are so blessed in our Catholic practice and tradition to have this wonderful gift of the Lord s Sacrament of Mercy. In this sacrament, as in all the Sacraments, it is Jesus who ministers personally to us. As we enter into Holy Week, I encourage all our parishioners to be personally blessed by Jesus through encountering Him in this Sacrament of Mercy. The following schedule outlines the availability of the Sacrament of Mercy during this Holy Week: Communal Celebration of Reconciliation/Confession This Sunday, April 9th - 7:30pm Holy Week Reconciliation Times Tuesday, April 11th after 8:30am Mass, 4:00-5:00pm and 7:00-8:00pm Wednesday, April 12th after 6:30am Mass, 4:00-5:00pm, 6:00-6:25pm & 7:00-8:00pm There will be no confession times on Holy Saturday, April 15th Easter Mass Schedule Saturday, April 15th - 7:00pm Easter Vigil Mass Easter Sunday, April 16th 5:45am Sunrise (Courtyard), 7:00am, 9:00am (Church & Parish Hall), 10:45am (Church & Parish Hall), 12:30pm and 6:00pm En español : 2:00pm - Misa en la parroquia. No habrá misa de las 4pm en español. RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS AT ALL EASTER MASSES: The renewal of our Baptismal promises at all our Easter Masses next weekend will give each of us an opportunity through our simple and personal I do response to let grace deepen the change in our hearts. Our standing for the renewal of our Baptismal promises will become a testimonial to who we are and more importantly of whose we are. Our ongoing change of heart through God s saving grace will help us as servant leaders in the ministry of our everyday lives so that we will live daily more fully through our loving service and give clear witness on who and whose we are. The joyful season of Lent culminates with the renewal of our Baptismal promises after the homily during the Easter Masses when we stand to say I do six times in response to the Baptismal promises/questions. Through this action, we will all be taking a very deliberate and intentional stand for our faith. The following are the questions that we will be saying I do to during our standing posture. They are shared here for our prayerful preparatory reflection: Do you reject sin so as to live in the freedom of God s children? Do you reject the glamour of evil and refuse to be mastered by sin? Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness? Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth? Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting? RECOVERING THE MEMORY AND DATE OF OUR BAPTISM: As we discover and remember the date of our Baptism and if we need to, get a new Baptismal candle from the parish office, it is important that each year on the Baptismal date the Baptismal candle is lighted and placed on the dinner table as a reminder of Whose we are. Parishioners baptismal candles will be blessed during the sprinkling rite at all of the Easter Masses after the renewal of the baptismal promises. The symbolism of the baptismal candle is a most appropriate sign of the life of the Risen Christ among us and within us. The baptismal candle is also a reminder of our pastoral theme, We are all sinners loved by God. The Special Mass of the Holy Oils with Bishop Kicanas and priests of the diocese will take place this Monday, April 10th at 2 pm, at the Cathedral. All parishioners are invited to participate in this special Mass. Holy Week Confession Schedule: This Sunday evening, Palm Sunday, our 7:30 pm Communal Penance service gives each of us the individual opportunity to seek mercy and forgiveness for our sins through the great gift of the Sacrament of Mercy (Reconciliation/ Confession). Tuesday, April 11th - after the 8:30 AM Mass, 4:00-5:00 PM and 7:00-8:00 PM; Wednesday, April 12th - after the 6:30 AM Mass, 4:00-5:00 PM, 6:00-6:25 PM, and 7:00-8:00 PM. There will be no confession times on Holy Saturday, April 15th. Triduum Schedule: April 13 - Holy Thursday - Mass of the Lord s Supper - 7pm, April 14 - Good Friday Stations of the Cross - 2:30pm, Passion of our Lord - 7pm, April 15 - Holy Saturday Easter Vigil & Mass - 7pm, April 16 - Easter Masses 5:45am, 7am, 9am, 10:45am,12:30pm, and 6pm. Misa en español a las 2:00pm en la parroquia. No habrá misa de las 4pm en español. WASHING OF FEET ON HOLY THURSDAY...AND SERVANT LEADERSHIP: During these past years it has been customary for us to wash the feet of parishioners who are significantly involved in leadership roles within the parish. Following the example of Pope Francis, a representative group of twelve people from the R.C.I.A. and the P.O.F. will have their feet washed this Holy Thursday. After washing the feet of His disciples on the first Holy Thursday evening, Jesus told them, Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me teacher and master and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. If we are all part of a servant Church... a servant community and if we are called to serve others in the ministry of our everyday lives, then we must also be willing to wash each other s feet in loving service.

2 2 HOLY THURSDAY ALTAR OF REPOSE IN THE PARISH HALL: The altar of repose devotion will conclude in the Parish Hall at 10:00pm on Thursday evening. The Blessed Sacrament will be transferred to the Cenacle Chapel for quiet prayer and meditation until 7:00am on Friday morning. The doors to the church off the Placita will remain open for parishioners who wish to come during the night for a time of prayer in the church or the Cenacle Chapel on Thursday evening/friday morning. The empty Tabernacle and the church, void of its Sacred symbols after the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Thursday evening, presents a different prayer environment. It helps us meditate on the arrest, trial, death, and burial of Jesus on the first Holy week. The church space and the Cenacle Chapel will continue to be a special place of quiet prayer during this Holy time. There will be no exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the Cenacle Chapel during the Triduum days. EASTER JOY - SATURDAY EASTER VIGIL & 23 NEW MEMBERS: We welcome with great joy at the 7pm Easter Vigil Mass next Saturday 10 people for Baptism, 6 adults making a Profession of Faith, 7 adults who participated in the Confirmation class. There will be 4 couples getting their marriages blessed and validated. God s spirit continues to do wonders among us. He leads us into and blesses us in the community of the Spirit which is at the heart of who we are as a Church APRIL 16TH 5:45AM OUTDOOR ANNUAL EASTER SUNRISE MASS: The outdoor sunrise Mass will be celebrated again in the courtyard this year. The rising sun should be coming over the rim of the horizon during Mass. As usual, the altar setting in the courtyard will be quite informal with the participants standing throughout the Mass. Please note: there are no chairs. BLESSED EASTER WATER: Blessed Easter water for sprinkling the homes of parishioners will be available in small containers at all the church doors on Easter weekend. Four thousand (4,000) of the Easter water containers go rather quickly in the period of the weekend. The home blessing prayer that can be prayed as a part of the sprinkling ritual will be available in the Easter bulletin. EXTRA OVERFLOW PARKING: The gates to the basketball courts off Calle Ileo, on the west side of Kolb Road, will be open the next few weekends to accommodate the greater parking needs. Walking access from the basketball court to the church, only on Easter Sunday, is conveniently available through the school courtyard. This basketball court arrangement for extra overflow parking will be particularly helpful Easter Sunday morning during the 9:00am and 10:45am concurrent Masses in the Parish Hall. PARISH ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL UPDATE: Thanks to the 405 parishioners who have already pledged $100,996 representing 64% of our parish goal for this year s appeal. This report involves the first month of the campaign. It means that we are more than halfway towards the $158,000 parish goal. Parishioners who have not yet completed their pledge to this year s appeal are encouraged to do so. 3 R s CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Last weekend was Commitment Sunday during the 4PM Spanish Mass families contributed a total of $64,267. Thank you so much for your support. Overall, the campaign has raised $659,080. We are now at 77.5% of goal. Please do what you can to support our campaign. AFTER EASTER ALIENATED CATHOLICS ANONYMOUS: Inactive? Hurt? Angry? Alienated from God or the Church? Seeking peace? Come to the 6-part after Easter Alienated Catholics Anonymous series. The series begins on Easter Monday evening, April 17th at 7pm in the Parish Activities Center. Sometimes, years of non-participation makes Catholics feel like strangers in their own church. This series will involve informal sharing, reflections from Catholics recently returned to full and active participation in their faith. It will also serve as an update on what Catholics believe. The series will address the needs of those who have entered into non-sacramental marriages and where there exists conflicts between their closest relationships and their Church. Registration is encouraged, but not required. Brochures on the series are available in the church vestibule and the parish office. These Monday evenings are open to all and will be facilitated by the Pastor. REFLECTION FROM THE PLACE OF JESUS DYING BY FR. RONALD ROLHEISER: When we think of the passion of Jesus, we spontaneously think of it as the intense suffering he endured during his scourging and crucifixion. But that, true as it is, misses the real meaning. The English word passion takes its root in the Latin word passio, meaning passivity, and that is its real connotation here. The passion narratives describe what Jesus gave to us through his passivity, just as the earlier parts of the Gospels describe what Jesus gave to us through his activity. Notice that the English word patient also comes from the Latin word passio. After Jesus is arrested he is, in effect, entering hospice, palliative care. And from there, from the place of his dying, he is able to give us something that he could not give through all of his previous activities. This is a mystery, a gift inside passivity, which many of us have experienced as intangible grace flowing from the beds of our loved ones as they lay dying. Passivity and dying can potentially contain a great gift to others. Sadly this is a a wisdom we are in danger of loving. Today, within a culture that tends to identify value only with utility, action and word, it is no secret that more and more people are beginning to speak of euthanasia as death with dignity. What is the value, they ask, of people continuing to live on in hospice where there is no chance of recovery or improvement and they have already slipped away from us consciously? The answer lies in the mystery of passivity, as seen most clearly in Jesus passion. In his passivity and dying he was able to give us something deeper than what he gave through his strength and activity. This is death with dignity.
