INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We never marginalize or turn our backs on those who suffer violence, oppression from unjust systems, poverty, illness, or disease. Jesus never turned anyone away, but always extended a hand of healing and compassion. He would insist on extending God's merciful and unconditional love to all, even if it meant breaking the Sabbath or civil law. Does the way we treat others, especially those who are different than us, reflect the freedom, joy, love, and good news of the Gospel?

Plourde will be offering a spiritual reflection on the Creed at the Christian Life Center during the Lenten Season. The reflection sessions will be held on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and repeated on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. There will be three reflection sessions on Wednesday, February 21, 28 and March 7. You are welcome to attend any one of the sessions or all three. These reflections sessions can be attended via teleconference in Caribou and Houlton. MONTHLY THEME February 2018 Joy of loving tenderly 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes in all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. (1Cor 13:4-8) Love is always a gift of God. (n. 228) Young married couples should be encouraged to develop a routine that gives a healthy sense of closeness and stability through shared daily rituals. These could include a morning kiss, an evening blessing, waiting at the door to welcome each other home, taking trips together and sharing household chores. Yet, it also helps to break the routine with a party and to enjoy family celebrations of anniversaries and special events. We need these moments of cherishing God s gifts and renewing our zest for life. As long as we can celebrate, we are able to rekindle our love, to free it from monotony and color our daily routine with hope. 5 WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: Carnivale and Mardi Gras celebrations are linked to Ash Wednesday, Lent, fast and abstinence. Can you tell us more about the connections between these events? Answer: Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the forty days known as Lent. Every year, Christians highlight this penitential season as a time of self-examination, reformation of one's life, and continued development of a deeper spiritual life. The recommended practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving become the focus of Lenten activity and ritual. Each of these spiritual practices is aimed at personal discipline as well as continued concern for the other, especially the poor or alienated. Forty days is a symbolic biblical period of time, during which personal transformation occurs and out of which people surface as more spiritual, ready to carry out God's mission. Relying on God's providence and care, no matter how difficult life becomes, is crucial to Lenten spirituality. Fasting was initially stricter, permitting only one simple meal a day without meat, fish, or other delicacies. Such things were not even allowed in the house. In order to prepare for this in an age of no refrigeration, people gathered to consume whatever was not allowed during Lent. This led to parties or celebrations originally referred to as Carnivale, literally meaning "goodbye to meat," or Mardi Gras, literally meaning "Fat Tuesday." The eating and celebrating ended on the Tuesday just before Ash Wednesday. Today we focus more on moderation in all things, as well as a strong concern the poor.
