1 ST. JAMES UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 2945 Main Street, East Troy, WI Rev. Lorrin Radzik Following the Cross September 2015 Pastor s Ponderings 10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters, 12 What I mean is that each of you says, I belong to Paul, or I belong to Apollos, or I belong to Cephas, or I belong to Christ. 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? [ ] 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. ~ 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17 Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! The passage above is one that I ve been praying over and reflecting on this past month as I think about our congregation. Take a few moments to reflect on the words that Paul has written to the church in Corinth. Divisions in the church deeply concerned the Apostle Paul, so much so that the first preserved letter we have from him to the church in Corinth begins with a message that continues throughout the rest of the letter. Paul tells the church in Corinth: Be united in the same mind and purpose that which is consistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Beloved, for some time we have been searching for the mission and vision that God has for us at St. James UMC. For some time there have been rumblings of divisions among us. The fact of the matter is this: each of us is God s beloved child, brought into the family of God through baptism, and called here to St. James by God s love to serve together. God has brought us together and made us into a family, with all its joys and difficulties, challenges and blessings. And as a part of the family of God we are called to serve in mission here in East Troy to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. How we decide to live out that mission is up to us. How we use the gifts God has blessed us to transform our community and share the good news of Jesus, inviting others into relationship with him with is the work of the church and the work of God s family today and always. This is what each of us is called to do as disciples of the living God. At St. James, we are at a crossroads, and it is time for us to gather together as a body and as a family of God to talk about our mission, vision, and goals for the coming years. On September 20 th, the church leaders have scheduled time to gather with all the members of the church as one church, brought together in Christ s love for one another, to discuss the ways in which we will decide to transform the world with God s love. Together, we must talk through and set aside some of the divisions that hold us back from fully engaging in Christian love with one another as a Church of Jesus Christ in East Troy. Together, we must focus our work as a church so that we can share a common witness in our community and reach out to those beyond our doors to those who are desperately in need of God s transforming love. Beloved, we have the greatest news in all the world and it s our job, as disciples to do the sharing. Please plan to join us on September 20 th for an open discussion about our direction, goals, and mission at St. James UMC following the worship service. We hope that this time will be a time of sharing information and listening to the needs and desires of the people who call St. James their church home as we seek to be united in mind and purpose, as the Apostle Paul instructed the church in Corinth: to share in the work that Christ has called us to do, making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Pastor Lorrin

6 Take a Moment... To Grow Closer to God! Shaped to Serve God has made each of us a unique individual shaped to serve and to glorify Him! Last month I talked about our faith family. Jesus established this ongoing community of faith, hope and love when he established his church. Additionally, Jesus chose us to carry out his work here on earth. Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15). Disciples have great faith, know God s will, have God in control of their lives, and hear God through prayer. One of the struggles in a Christian life is, How can we be sure God is in control? We ask Him to control our lives and reveal His purpose; and yet, at the end of the day, for many of us, we are back in control. What about His purpose for us? How do we know that we are serving him as He planned for us. Well, God is not playing games with us. He wants us to understand His will, His purpose, and His plan for our lives. God.... invited you into this wonderful friendship with His Son, even Christ our Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:9) Little information comes from the Bible on techniques on how to know God s will. But there are numerous verses that talk about developing a loving relationship with Jesus. God s will is a relationship. The better you know Him, the less confusion you will have about what His will is for you. It is like a marriage or living in a family unit. The more we know about our spouse, or our family and friends, the more we will understand their love and hope for us. Because we know them, we know how to live in a relationship that receives love and forgiveness. Rick Warren shares that if you want to know God s will, you need to admit that you need guidance. Psalm 25:9 says, He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. This is the first step in getting God s will for our lives. The second step is to ask God in faith for directions. If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it. (James 1:5) There are two keys to knowing God s wisdom. First, you ask the right person God. Then you ask with the right attitude, expecting God to answer. God honors faith, and he promises wisdom for the next step of our lives. The wisdom we seek from God isn t delivered by UPS. We can t buy it on Amazon. It doesn t show up on Facebook. When we ask for God s wisdom, we need to take the time to listen. Job 33:14 says, God does speak sometimes one way and sometimes another even though people may not understand it. The question is, How do we understand it? How do we tune in so that we hear God s voice? God speaks to us through the Bible. It is our guidebook for life. We need to read God s word every day. If we don t have a daily devotional time, God is getting a busy signal when he wants to speak to us. God speaks to us through teachers. Pastors, Sunday school teachers, our faith family, significant people in our lives. God uses these means to meet our needs the ticket, though, is that we need to be listening. God speaks to us through impressions. When we feel an impression or a thought, we need to realize that every impression or thought has to match God s word. God speaks to us through our circumstances. God uses circumstances that come into our lives to help us live a life of significance. Challenges are faith builders. They make us strong and lead us in ways we don t always understand. Following God is not always easy, but it will bless our lives in ways we cannot imagine. Praise be to God! Judy McFarlane
