1 September 2017 Newsletter God Will Direct Our Path Proverbs 3:5-6 Dear Friends, I am thrilled to join the congregation of Living Hope Lutheran Church this month! Thank you so very much for your warm, enthusiastic welcome. Your prayers, support, and encouragement have made our move such a smooth transition. I am excited to learn more about the people of Living Hope, and the journeys on which God is leading you individually and together. By way of introduction, please let me share a little of my journey with you. Since I was a young child, my favorite Bible Passage was Isaiah 6:8, Here am I, send me! Born and raised in Lutheran Churches and Schools in Michigan, I began church ministry as a youth, leading international mission trips while I was still in high school. Since then, I have continued serving as an educator, youth minister, mission leader, and pastor. I am passionate about working with children, youth, and families, especially in developing ongoing opportunities for faith formation. I enjoy teaching all ages (adults, too!), and I am interested in mission opportunities in our community. I love opportunities to connect faith, scripture, and the Holy Spirit s work together in practical ways we can apply to our daily lives. David and I have been happily married for 13 years. Together, we love traveling, trying new foods, and riding a motorcycle. We re both pastor s kids and Midwesterners, we speak Spanish, and we have a spoiled cat. David has just joined the faculty of the University School of Milwaukee as their Innovation Engineer. I attended Luther Seminary through their Distributed Learning program, which means that I was a student while still leading youth ministry in Michigan. After my 2016 graduation, I was honored to receive their Graduate Preaching Fellowship, which allowed David and me to travel throughout the world and learn how churches are serving refugees and immigrants in a variety of contexts. Despite all of our travel around the world whether on a plane, train, or motorcycle I have found that the most rewarding journeys are the spiritual paths on which God leads us. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to: Trust the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge God, and the Lord will direct your paths. God has been leading our paths together for some time now, even when we did not know or understand what direction we were going. Now, God has directed our paths together, and we get to partner in doing God s work in Saukville. I am eager to learn about the opportunities we have to share in ministry together. I look forward to learning more about your faith stories and spiritual journeys. Please introduce yourself, and schedule a time to meet and share. Office hours and get-to-know-us events will be published very soon. Grace and Peace, Pastor Kelly Pastor Kelly Nieman Anderson Shannon Stoker, Parish Administrator Beki Tetzlaff & Dawn Zirtzlaff, pastorkelly@livinghopesaukville.org shannon@livinghopesaukville.org Here We Grow Directors herewegrow@livinghopesaukville.org
2 WELCOME PASTOR KELLY NIEMAN ANDERSON!!!!! We are very excited to welcome Pastor Kelly to Living Hope. It is important that we as members of this congregation support, communicate and pray for her as she begins this journey with us. Her first official day was September 1st, and her first day for preaching was Sunday September 3rd. Councils from LH and CTK had a joint meeting on August 3rd, we discussed how the first month of sharing Pastor Kelly might look like. We also made preliminary plans for her installation date, Sunday October 1st. The councils will continue to meet monthly for now and then quarterly after awhile. We plan to keep communications open as we move ahead on this great adventure with the Holy Spirit guiding us step by step Your Friend in Christ--Beki Tetzlaff, Council President New Sunday Morning Schedule 9:15-10:15am Sunday School & Confirmation Classes Beginning September 10th register your child with the form at the end of this newsletter (no fees to register your child) 10:30am Worship Service A MISSION OF LIVING HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH herewegrow@livinghopesaukville.org Phone (262) SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS SEPTEMBER 5 TH We are excited to start our new school year and have some fun J.A.M. time with our new pastor. 3 A very big "Thank You!" to Cliff Polheber for replacing the Living Hope/Here We Grow mailbox post. The old post had been split and broken by winter snowplowing. It had been temporarily repaired, but was in great need of replacement. We are ready for winter snow plowing! He is currently helping to expand the fenced in play area for the toddlers at Here We Grow. Cliff also works with the Boy Scouts who meet at Living Hope. Thank you Cliff! 3
4 A Note from Trinny and Henry... 21st Annual Statewide Down Syndrome Awareness Walk & 5K Run, Roll & Stroll Henry's Heroes Trinny Schumann September 24, 2017 Whether it's a friend, a family member, or neighbor down the street, we almost all know someone with Down syndrome. Like us, many of you have been personally touched by the lives of these individuals. We are proud to be part of the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin's 21st Annual Statewide Down Syndrome Awareness Walk and 5K Run, Roll & Stroll because it means so much to us and to our family. People with Down syndrome are more ALIKE the rest of us than they are different. They have feelings, talents and dreams just like everyone. They deserve to be accepted and appreciated for who they are and what they contribute to our lives and our communities. We are hoping to have a gigantic team for Henry this year!!! Save the date -September 24th. Statewide Down Syndrome Awareness Walk at the Milwaukee County Zoo. My sister Tristann and I are doing a couch to 5K program to train for the run in the morning, but there is a walk later in the afternoon that we will be doing as well. There are a number of ways to get involved. 1) Run with us at the zoo at 7:30am (if you are a fast runner you can get back to church) 2) Join us for the festival at noon(ish) (we are hoping people will want to come right after church) 3) Register for the walk/stroll at 1:30 4) Register to be a virtual walker if you are in another town 5) Make a donation 6) Spread the word Click the link below to register or donate: 4
5 September 2017 Please note the following dates: Thursdays September 7 & 21 Thursdays October 5 & 19 Thursdays November 2 & 16 Knewsy Knotes It s that time of year!! Hearts to Hands annual Fall Harvest is on Thursday evening, October 5. This is when we tag all of the hats and scarves that we have knit/crocheted/loomed over the past year with a message of God s love for the inner city children in Milwaukee who will receive them. Then they will be blessed during worship before they are sent on their way. In the past few years, some of us from Hearts to Hands have had a great time attending the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. If you knit, crochet or loom knit, you might be interested in attending this event. Contact Cathy Higgins ( ) or Julie Irish ( ) or check out this website for more details: Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival September 7-10, 2017 (Registration opens June 1, 2017) Jefferson Fair Park, Jefferson, WI Listen Love Repeat Our culture is obsessed with self. In our schedules, our relationships, and especially online. But we are less content than in decades past. The reason? We have forgotten that joy comes from putting others first. Reclaiming that joy requires us to live alert, listening for heart drops -hints from those in our lives who might need a helping hand or a generous dose of encouragement. Karen Ehman, a Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker & bestselling author, gives practical, creative ways to scatter kindness, including loving our family & friends, reaching out to the lonely, blessing the necessary people who help us get life done every day, and loving the hard-to-love by following Jesus example. Please join us in September as we start our new DVD study Listen, Love, Repeat. Remembering His words, Love one another, Hearts to Hands regularly meets to knit and crochet for others while sharing fellowship and devotional time. We continue to meet at church on the 1 st & 3 rd Thursday of each month. We will share fellowship time at 6:30 PM and begin our study about 7:15 PM followed by prayers, concluding about 8:30 PM. Join us! All are welcome, even if you don t knit or crochet. We encourage you to come, participate in the fellowship and Bible/devotional study. Please feel welcome to come, share in fellowship and grow in faith. If you are in need of child care in order to attend, please let us know. If you have any other questions, please call Cathy at or Julie at We look forward to having you join us! Hearts to Hands uses the Living Hope mailbox, #166. 5
