2 2 Pastor s Page. Scripture Insights to Biblical Prayer (1) Pray as if only God is listening. Matthew 6:5-6 (ESV) 5 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (2) Pray slowly. Think before you speak. Matthew 6:7-8 (ESV) 7 And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (3) Pray for others as you want others to pray for you. Matthew 6:12, (ESV) 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (4) Pray to understand God s will for you, not to get God to follow yours for Him. Luke 11:2 (KJV) And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. James 4:3 (NIV) When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (5) Remember: You don t always know what you re talking about. Matthew 20:22 (NIV) "You do not know what you are asking," Jesus replied. "Are you able to drink the cup I am going to drink?" "We are able," the brothers answered. (6) So it s okay to ask for help. John 14:16 (NIV) And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever Romans 8:26 (NIV) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (7) Don t stop. Ever. Ephesians 6:18 (NIV) Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints. The last insight is that the quality of prayer that renders it effective is not that of how but of whom. When the twelve asked Jesus to teach them how to pray (asking, as it were, for a sample prayer), He began his answer with those beloved words: Our Father... The truth behind that lesson: Prayer is a conversation based on relationship. Yours with God, mine with God, and ours with each other because all who know and belong to the Lord belong to each other as well. Hoping to see you at the next family gathering Pastor John

3 3 Finance Moment Generous people do not give in expectation of receiving a material return from God. God is not a giant vending machine or a lottery ticket. The Christian gives from a thankful heart for God s blessings, even when physical or economic life is difficult. When we give generously, we witness to the work that our faith matters, and the church matters. When we give our money and other resources, we make a statement about whom we trust and who we re willing to make sacrifices to. The practice of generosity stretches us to offer our utmost and highest to God rather than to give in a manner that is haphazard, unplanned, reactive, or mediocre. We should not give from the what s left over place, but from a what comes first priority. 5 5 Mission Notes for October First I will ask a question; what does it mean to be IN MISSION? Where is our mission field? Have you noticed the sign by our driveway as we are entering Barnes Road? The sign reads You are now entering our Mission Field. There are many unchurched people, men, women, and children who need Jesus. There are many people in our community who believe in Jesus who are not active in any church and others who do not believe in Him. We need to reach out to these people. They need Jesus and we need them in order to reach more people for Jesus. (See Matthew 9:37-37) Now just a note to say that on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 Dennis Gasper and I will be taking the dresser filled with items for a needy mom and her baby up to Positive Alternatives in Caro. This is an act of service and also a witness to this lady that God/Jesus love her and her baby. There is also a father in this picture and the staff at Positive Alternatives reach out to him. way.
