1 Centenary United Methodist Church 429 Main Street, Shelbyville, KY Vol. 20 No November 2016 What does a disciple of Jesus Christ at Centenary look like? Recently, I was part of a group of clergy and laity that discussed the question, What does a disciple of Jesus Christ look like? was raised. After some discussion, each pastor was challenged to articulate their vision for what a disciple of Jesus looks like in their place of service. What follows is not a perfected statement. It s a rough draft. It s me in the moment, sharing my thoughts my heart with you. Do me a favor please. If you read it, will you please let me know even if you don t agree with me. -Pastor Willard A disciple of Jesus Christ at Centenary United Methodist Church is a person who has experienced the grace of God and is deeply grateful to God for all that He has done for them and lives in a way that reflects that gratitude. They see their lives as a blessing even the difficult days and recognize that they are not blessed to simply feel better about their lives, but as stewards of God s mercy have been entrusted with the mission of sharing God s love with the world around them transforming that world to look more like the Kingdom of God. As the word disciple means student, Christ s followers at Centenary seek to grow in their knowledge about God, God s Word and how to live this life of faith in the 21 st Century. Some avenues may be attractive than others but each one is looking for some opportunity to learn and grow in their faith. Centenary s disciples recognize they are a part of a community a church family and they desire to be with the other members. Being together is not a last resort for when there is no better option, but a high priority in their lives. They may know some better than others; may even like some more than others, but they desire to love all the members even if especially if they do not always agree on every issue. If one of them hurts, they all hurt. If one of them celebrates, they all rejoice. They care for each other and that caring witnesses to their love for their God. A significant part of their life together in community is spent in worshipping God. There is a hunger in their beings to be with each other in God s presence: singing, praying, reading the Scriptures together and hearing God s word explored. Whether in good times or in times of pain, worshipping God is important to them. As they walk in this world, the disciples at Centenary see this world and its people the way God sees them. Each person is one whom God loves, for whom Christ died and of infinite worth to God. They ask, What can we do to help them find their way home to God? and How can we serve Christ using the gifts and graces that the Holy Spirit has given us? This will lead a disciple of Jesus to: love God, love people and make disciples. As they continue in that task they discover that not only have they been (and are continuing to be) changed but they are helping to transform the streets of Shelbyville and perhaps to their surprise even the world.
