At this time German Christians were divided over Hitler. One group allied themselves with Hitler; they wanted a pure German nation. They formed an official German church which supported Hitler and banned Jews from holding official positions in the Church. Bonhoeffer was among those who could not go along with Hitler s anti-jewish, radically German vision. With others he set up an underground church which explicitly refused to ally itself to Hitler s Third Reich vision. It was dangerous. In 1937 Bonhoeffer was fired. He fled to London. Two years later, Bonhoeffer s faced with a choice. He s been offered one of the most prestigious theology appointments in the world lecturing at Union Seminary in New York or returning to Germany to head up an illegal, underground seminary for the churches who refuse to go along with Hitler. He decides his faith is meaningless if he takes the easy option. He heads back to Germany and finds Hitler so evil that he abandons his commitment to non-violence and gets involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler. The plot fails and in 1943 Bonhoeffer s arrested. In prison he leads worship services for his fellow prisoners, until the fateful day April 9, 1945 when he s executed by the Nazis. Through all this, what distressed Bonhoeffer was the way so many Christians could sell out to Hitler s evil vision. How could people who owned the name of Christ so betray Christ? How could they pray in a church which banned Jews from holding office? It convinced Bonhoeffer that religiosity in and of itself was worthless. It didn t matter how fervently a person believed Jesus, how many times each day they prayed, how earnestly and sincerely they sang hymns on Sundays. In the end, the measure of spirituality is not how we are in the church, but how we are in the whole of life. In the end, the measure of spirituality is to live in the world as a man or woman who is for others. Peace and blessings for the New Year, Jimmy

We enjoy dinner of meatballs, cheeseballs, and cake balls. Our youth facilitate multiple ball game stations as we host other United Methodist churches 3rd-5th graders. A Guide to Making Really Good Choices is one of my favorites and a great way to start the new year. Saints Book Club is limited to 3rd-5th graders AND you must have read the book to participate. Romans 8:28 Youth Sunday School WCYouth Sunday School meets in the WCGym at 10am every Sunday. The Confirmation Class meets in Room 1, Senior High in Room 2 and Middle School in Room 3. New studies will begin in the new year so join us in 2016! Sunday January 10 Honduras 2016 There will be an informational meeting on Sunday, January 10 at 3:45pm in the Sanctuary about the 2016 Honduras summer mission trip. If you are interested in joining the WC Team this summer, June 4-11, please attend this meeting. We will share details, costs, and expectations at this meeting. It is an amazing experience to serve in Honduras we hope you will join us. This trip is open to Senior High youth and adults. (Space is limited and there are registration deadlines, so please do not miss this meeting.) United Methodist Youth Fellowship Sunday, January 10 is Winter Ball Night for CLUB345!!! Come ready to help with all the fun and games! Meet in the WCGym a few minutes before 5pm. Pick up at 7pm. Sunday, January 17 the WCYouth will be cooking a huuuuuge meal that will be served at MUST Ministries. We are going to be making tons of chili, cornbread, coleslaw, and dessert. Everyone will need to bring the grocery items they signed up for at UMYF on 1/3 and 1/10 so we can cook on the 17th. The meal will be delivered on 1/18 so put on your chef hat and come help cook, package the food, and clean up!! Sunday, January 24 is our Winter Whites for MUST Sunday. We will have a Mission meal at 5pm in the WCGym and then the WCYouth will provide the entertainment in the Sanctuary. Bring new socks for those in need at MUST! Sunday, January 31 Secret Destination!!! Details TBA! And mark your calendars for SOUPER BOWL of Caring Sunday on February 7th!! The WCYouth will serve a soup lunch at noon after our service. The cost for this lunch is a donation to benefit our hungry neighbors. All monies stay in our neighborhood to help those in need locally. (No p.m. UMYF)

4 Ladies Sunday School class will begin a new 12-week study of the New Testament books of 1st and 2nd Peter, and Jude. Please join us on January 17th as we introduce this study, written by the apostle Peter, instructing the early Christians how to grow in their faith and remain faithful. We will also be studying the one chapter book of Jude, written by Jesus brother, instructing the early believers to be on guard for false teachers. Study guides are $5 and we meet at 10am on Sundays, upstairs, in the Christian Education building. Monday Morning Study Group will begin a new study, Meeting Jesus, on Monday, January 11th. Please join us as we introduce this 13-week study of Jesus life which discloses His person, His teaching, His actions, and His claims as written in the four Gospels. Study guides are $5 and we meet every Monday morning at 10am in The Great Room off of the Sanctuary.
