1 Mission/Purpose: We Exist to: Love God. Love People. Make Disciples Vision: To be changed by Christ to love and serve in the streets of Shelbyville & the World Centenary United Methodist Church Shelbyville Ky Vol 15 No 5 May 2011 MOTHER S DAY THOUGHTS The family is like a garden with joy for all to share, With tender, growing blossoms that thrive on love and care, And when the flowers are gathered for a very special day, They make a bright and beautiful happiness bouquet. ~Mary Loberg She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. Proverbs 31:26 UPDATE FROM BUILDING TEAM The Building Team has been busy interviewing architects and design/build companies. After the selection of an architect, we will be seeking to secure an initial floor plan that takes into consideration the feedback received from the Cottage Meetings. This plan will be shared at the IGNITE event for further feedback. Our hope is to have a finalized plan that can be affirmed by a Charge Conference in August, anticipating a fall stewardship campaign. Saturday, June 18 from 5:00-8:30 p.m. Fellowship Hall Everyone is encouraged to attend IGNITE, scheduled for Saturday, June 18, 4:00-7:30 p.m. During the sessions, members will be invited to interact with the vision of the church for a building addition. The Building Team has been busy getting an initial drawing, taking into account the feedback received from the Cottage Meetings last November. There will be opportunities for additional dialogue and questions regarding the project that is being considered for, and addressed by, a capital stewardship campaign. Our RSI stewardship consultant, Dustin Cooper, will be providing leadership. Supper will be provided. Please RSVP by ing (centenaryumc@insightbb.com) or calling ( ) the church office no later than June 12. UPDATE FROM STAFF PARISH RELATIONS The interview team for our new Director of Student Ministries has narrowed the list of candidates from 25 to three. The finalists will be visiting Centenary in May, meeting in gatherings with youth and parents, making presentations, and being interviewed. Centenary youth and their parents are invited to meet the three candidates for the Director of Student Ministries position. The first meet-and-greet event was on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. The second candidate weekend will be at a picnic at Kurt and Jamie Smith s on Saturday, May 21 and during Sunday worship on May 22 (Senior Sunday). We are in the process of confirming a date for the third candidate and will share that information as it becomes available. We hope our youth and their parents will make it a priority to be a part of these activities. At this time we have three resumes for our Music position and are continuing our efforts to fill that position.

4 4 Guess Who Surprised Kids Korner Kids & Volunteers With a Special Visit? Over 50 children got a hug or a high five from Peter Cotton (thank you Andy) in April and they loved it; as did their parents and the Kids Korner volunteers. Feeding about 70 people an Easter feast was another wonderful part of the special day of games, crafts and an Easter message. Next Kids Korner event is May 21 st. Hope you can join us as a volunteer, but most importantly as a prayer warrior for this vital ministry. Peter Cotton Tail brought out the smiles for Kids Korner CHILDREN S MINISTRIES I would like to give a very special thank you to everyone who helped to make our annual Easter picnic and egg hunt a huge success this year. Despite the extremely inclement weather the children had a great time hunting Easter eggs inside. It was a wonderful time of fellowship for all of our families. The Sunbeam children s choir will be singing for Mother s Day on Sunday, May 8 th at both the 8:48 and 11:00 worship services. The choir has been practicing and is looking forward to singing as we celebrate our mothers on this special Sunday together. On Wednesday night May 25 th, we will be having our end of school year party. We will be having bouncy machines, special crafts, games and ice cream to celebrate the end of another school year and the beginning of summer. This fun night of many activities will be held from 7:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. after choir practice. We hope everyone will be able to join us for this great night together and please invite your friends and family to join us. Mark your calendars, Centenary s Vacation Bible School will be held Sunday, July 10 th Thursday, July 14 th. Our special VBS worship service being held on Sunday, July 17 th. We will be Kicking It Old School with the Go Fish Guys this year. The children will travel through the Old Testament and New Testament Bible stories learning that God, His Promises, His Word and the gospel are unchangeable. The children will be participating in daily Bible skits, crafts, learning songs, games and recreational activities as they learn of God s mighty power and love for each one of them. The children will know that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever and God s holiness has never changed! We know this will be a week of great excitement and enthusiasm that all of the children and their families will not want to miss at CUMC. Thank you to all of you for your prayers and support of God s precious little children of CUMC and our community! YOUTH FELLOWSHIP Welcome Confirmation Class Meredith Celeste Gaither Rachel D. It is best to send an to: grampsatksu@hotmail.com Kentucky Conference Mission Offering June 5, 2011 To Benefit: Church planters in Thailand and Venezuela The following excerpt from a letter from Bishop Lindsey Davis gives an overview of this year s Mission Offering. Our mission offering this year will go to plant a new church in Thailand and to support the education and development of new church planters in the country of Venezuela. Both of these nations have young, emerging Methodist churches. Our efforts in Thailand are through Kentucky Conference leaders, Mike and Sherri Morrissey. The work in Venezuela is in cooperation with the United Methodist Church of Venezuela and their Bishop, Juvenal Perez. In Thailand we will be actually providing support for the development of a specific congregation, helping to fund the pastor s salary. In Venezuela we will be cooperating with the Seminary of the Methodist Church in Venezuela in helping to prepare their young clergy to be church planters. Over the past five years, over fifty new churches have been planted in Venezuela. As you may know from reading about this nation, the Christian witness is strong even in the midst of some difficulty and persecution. Our cabinet has set a goal of raising $120,000 for our mission offering this year. It will be divided equally between the efforts in Thailand and Venezuela. I am confident in your generous spirit. Last year we gave a record breaking $240,000 to support the ministry of Red Bird. I am confident that we can have another wonderful response from our people with your help. Please plan for a special offering at your church on the Sunday prior to Annual Conference or at another time that would be convenient for you. Then bring your church s check with you to conference to give during the Mission and Ministry Celebration on the evening of Friday, June 10. This year we begin a new journey with our brothers and sisters in Thailand and Venezuela. 6 6 Shelby County Community Support In case you are not aware George Cottrell, a teacher at Shelby County High School, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of ALS (Lou Gehrig s disease). He is a home-grown Shelby County guy. His wife Andrea is a teacher at Clear Creek Elementary. George and Andrea have two sons Jehren (SCHS graduate, 09) and Quinten (senior at SCHS). George and his family are active members of St. John s United Methodist Church and has shared his gift of music with Centenary as well. George is a special education teacher a Shelby County High School where he has coached football and track for the last 10 years. Since his diagnosis in January, George has gone from walking with a cane to a walker and now to a motorized wheel chair to accommodate this crippling disease. Insurance has been able to pick up the cost of the wheel chair and Shelby County community charities are taking care of a ramp that is much needed at their home for him to get in and out of the house. His next need is to purchase a wheelchair accessible van with a lift so he can easily get to Shelby County High School with his wheel chair where he is still teaching and coaching track. The cost for this van is between $10,000 and $20,000. He is still in the process of searching for a van. Co-workers at Shelby County High School are asking for donations to help off-set the cost of the van. Please join them in assisting the Cottrell family during this traumatic time. All donations collected will be deposited into an account at CUB bank set up in George and Andrea s name. Anonymous donations can be directly deposited at any local CUB bank. All donations should be taxdeductible. If you have any question, please feel free to contact Todd Shipley at LOCAL MISSIONS May 14 th United Methodist Church change the world day making a difference in your community.
