Pastor s Musings What s in a Life? Pastor Paul Dunham pastor@winsteadumc.org I had the chance the other day to attend a funeral of a person I did not know, but who was a faithful Christian in his life. I was there to pray for one of our brothers in the faith from here at Winstead. Because I had the chance to really listen and pray, a few things in the service really caused me to reflect. One thing was the clear image of life after life, when we have eternal life with Christ. This image came to my mind of the times when I have been grieving the death of my parents. I don t know about you, but after both of my parents died, I regularly would see them in my dreams, as real to me as when they were alive. I ve had times when I didn t want to awaken because in the waking I would have to grieve for them all over again. It struck me during the service that the very language we use is death is like a sleep from which we do not need to be awakened. In resting in the Lord, we are at peace and will see our Lord and Savior, plus we will be able to be with all those who rest from their labors and who rest in the Lord. Think about it- Scripture says that when we rest in the Lord, we still have the blessings of eternity with God to look forward to- no more tears, no more pain, no more death, and just light and life, like a refreshing fountain of life raining down from Jesus himself. It s almost that we will get to live in the dream- that this life is just the briefest of shadows, and that in resting in the Lord, the best things that we dream about will be the things we will live in before the Lord. The other thought I had was the question about how we will know that we have lived well. If I have loved Jesus, and then spent my life loving others like Jesus loves, then I will have lived well. And if I have spent my time doing anything other than that, I have squandered the very gift of life God has given me. If I have selfishly lived for myself or just my family, I have missed the chance to live the upward and outward focused life that God has designed me for. My family will be better off and more in love with God and each other if we spend our lives looking upward to God and outward to the world- so in loving and living like God calls, I help enrich them by NOT focusing just on them. For instance, look at the new LOGOS ministry that we are talking about putting into place here at Winstead. As we ve been saying, it will take a lot of sacrificial giving of time, talent, and treasure for us to pull it off. But the reason I think it will be the best thing we do for the Church for a generation is because it builds up so many things in the Lord: it will strengthen families, build disciples, give our senior ministry a place to (Continued on page 3) 2 The Winstead Connection

(Continued from page 2) grow and serve, increase our connection around the Church, incorporate a new generation of new families and new kids, help all of our kids grow in faith and grace, strengthen our worship, lift up our mission and outreach, build up better disciples across all age groups, and so much more. As a father, let alone as a pastor, all of this is vitally important to me. I want my kids to learn that giving of ourselves in such a deep and encompassing discipleship model is worth the sacrifice it will take. I want them to see how, by spending our time on the things of God, we grow as a family. I want them to see the twinkle in my eye about sharing God with others as something they can aspire to in their own lives. As a pastor, my hope is the same - that each church person who is sitting and receiving from the Church will see that they will best receive when they are actively serving and loving and reaching. My prayer is that all will see that a life worth living takes giving more than receiving, and that in the giving away of God s love, as we live immersed in God s love, we will receive abundantly far more of it than we ever gave. Pastor Paul s office hours Tuesday - Friday 10:30 am - Noon Charge Conference November 15 Winstead UMC will have a cluster Charge Conference with Elm City, West Nash, First Wilson UMC on November 15 at 7:00 pm at West Nash UMC. At that meeting, we will look at the Report from Nominations, as well as the pastoral salary recommendations from the SPRC. We will also need completed reports from the Trustee Committee, Finance Committee, and Parsonage Checklist Forms. Additional information needed includes the name and addresses of our college and high school students. This information helps our campus ministry folks contact and help out our students as they go through some of the most soul searching parts of their lives. We will also need the contacts for our first grade parents for our Camping Ministries to be able to inform our church families of all the camping options available to them. Please send that information to the church, so that we can complete that form. Those forms - which have not been always completed - need to be done this year, and need to be completed before Monday, November 14, so please help us complete them by getting us the information early. If you need a copy of the forms you or your committee need to submit, please contact the office. October

United Methodist Men By Fred Hight The UMM continue to have their second Sunday morning breakfast meeting at church. Our next meeting will be on October 9 at 7:30 am, and we will also have a potato bar lunch after church on that same day. The profit from this lunch will go to support the La Estrella ministry in Stanhope. We support this ministry, Hope Station, and the Methodist Home for Children and have recently decided that each time we have a fund raiser, we will give all the profit to one of these minis- tries. We will have baked potatoes, butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon bits, and chives for the potatoes. Will also have a tossed salad with tea, lemonade, and water to drink. We hope that members of the congregation will stay after church for this meal and help support this ministry. We will also participate in Duke Day on November 5 when Blue Devils will play Virginia Tech. We will offer free tickets and transportation to the youth of the church and other youth in the community. Adults are welcome, but they will have to pay $30 each for the trip. 4 The Winstead Connection

Opportunities to Serve Hand in Hand Ministry By Sanda Hight The Hand in Hand Committee met on September 5 to plan fall activities for our partnership with Vick Elementary School. Classroom Buddies have been assigned for all classrooms except for one. If you are interested in serving as a Classroom Buddy for this school year, please contact Priscilla Morello for information. Most of the Prayer Partners for this year have been assigned. We still need about thirteen people to sign up to be a Prayer Partner. Please contact Sanda Hight if you are interested in serving as a Prayer Partner for this year. At this time we have nine church members who will be serving as Tutors/ Mentors for the children at Vick. Several of our Tutors/Mentors attended a training session on Monday, September 26 at the Seeds of Hope House. We ask all of you to be in prayer for our Tutors/ Mentors and for children at Vick with whom they will work this year. We send thanks to all of you who contributed to the school supplies drive and the classroom supplies drive for the school this year. Vick Elementary School appreciates all of your gifts to help the students and teachers with their classroom needs. Please be in continual prayer all through this school year for Vick Elementary School. We ask for health, safety, and academic success for all the students and staff. The next Hand in Hand meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 in the Choir Room. Winstead History Corner By Sanda Hight (A continuing series that began in the May, 2016 issue.) Shortly after the church was organized on December 11, 1949, eight members were added to the church roll. These additional members were: Earl J. McFarlane, Mrs. Nellie Butler McFarlane, George C. Winbon, Mrs. Bruce Edwards Winbon, J. Clifton Cale, Mrs. Marjorie Powell Cale, Brenda Cale, and Linda Cale. These additional members made a total of nineteen members for the church. 6 Connecting to Winstead Following Jesus: Steps to a Passionate Faith Frontier Girls Begins October Your prayers; Your presence; Your gifts; Your service This is what you have to offer Jesus, but how do you begin to use these offerings as you follow him? You want to live out a passionate faith, but what are the steps you need to take? How are we going to do this at Winstead? We want everyone to participate. This study will have us energized for the basics of our faith, and will be the basis for our membership classes going forward. And we do hope EVERY MEMBER signs up for one of our weekly studies. After studying this fall, we will have a Covenant Renewal Service in January to celebrate our revival before the Lord. There will be signup sheets at the church, and online. Classes are scheduled for Sundays at 5:00 pm (Hood Hall), Wednesdays at 1:30 (Hood Hall), Thursdays at 9:30 am (Joyce Wolfe s home), and Thursdays at 7:00 pm (Stith s home). Following the completion of the class, people will be given the chance to commit themselves to living out their membership vows through a commitment to: A) attend worship regularly, B) serve in the church regularly, C) commit to participate in a small group/life group, and D) pledge to tithe or to work toward the tithe. Frontier Girls begins October 3, from 6:00-7:00 pm. This is a scouting troop for all girls from K-12th grades, with a faith-based scouting approach. It dovetails nicely with our Cub and Boy Scouts, as the girls can earn badges right along with the boys. This group has a wide-range of activities from hands-on experiences, to fun nights, to camping outings, to skill building, and leadership development. Come out and experience it for yourself! Finance Committee Update Ann Norvell, Chair The Finance Committee would like to express their sincere appreciation to all members giving their gifts graciously this year. Although we are behind $7,835 through August, we are very hopeful the remainder of the year will be moving toward a positive balance to meet our obligations by year end. God's richest blessings to you all! 6 The Winstead Connection

Opportunities to Serve Seeds of Hope Wilson By Priscilla Morello Thanks to Linda Lane, Mary Walston and Tassie Jones for helping with WOW (Walk On Wednesday) program at Vick School. If you d like to help with this ongoing program call Linda Lane. Punch the cards each time the students complete a circuit around the track or just walk with the kids Thanks to Joyce Wolfe for coordinating the Fit Club Jr. volunteers. It was a great program for the Kindergarten through Second Grade students at Vick. Thanks to Sanda Hight, Claudine Perkins, Debbie Williams, Pam Marshburn, and Edwina Kaeser for volunteering their time (and energy!!). And thanks to all who supported the Family Feud for Families fundraiser!! The Soup Kitchen won $500 for their nonprofit and Seeds of Hope Wilson raised funds to help with our ongoing programs. Agape Christmas Boxes Needed By Pastor Paul I spoke with those organizing our AGAPE Christmas Box effort, and they will extend us a little more time to get our Christmas boxes in. One of the main reasons the deadline was so early is that they/we need time to pack and ship the boxes. They are packing the shipping containers throughout October, on October 1st, 8th, 13th & 20th, (Saturdays and Thursdays) from 9 am to 3 pm. I've asked for us to have 2 more weeks then, to Wednesday the 12th, to receive our own boxes. Let's really dig into this- WE CAN DO THIS! Also, if you are available to help pack up any of those times, they've said that there is minimal lifting required, and that anyone from 5th or 6th grade on up to our senior members can come and help pack or help check boxes. A full packing list is available here: files/2016/08/2016-agape-christmas-box -List.pdf We only have about 25 boxes. We did 92 last year, and have set our goal on 90 boxes again this year, so please help! These boxes go directly to children and families who need these things greatly. 10 The Winstead Connection

Connecting to Winstead Church Shirt Update As part of reaching out with the good news about what God is doing here at Winstead, we re ordering shirts you can wear to things like the Red Wagon Pull, Disc Golf, to school or work, worship, etc. There are 2 types of shirts: Polos and Tees. The Polos will have a cross and flame Church name logo on the front. The Tees will have that, and also have the sample you see here on the back. Order forms will be in the office as soon as we have the full details on sizing. The price for the Tees will be $20/each, and $17 for 2 or more. (If the price is an issue, please let Pastor Paul know, and we ll work something out.) Kids sizing and prices will be out ASAP. Also, the Polo shirts are $25/each, and will need to be ordered before they are made. You can pick your size/color. Why I Serve Would you like to share why you serve? Send your submission to pshultz70@gmail.com for use in a future newsletter. Thanks in advance for sharing your story. Offerings placed in the baskets at the front of the aisles during communion are used to help those in need. The Upper Room daily devotional guides are available in the narthex. October
