REFLECTIONS Lutheran Church of the Resurrection 525 Minutemen Causeway, Cocoa Beach, FL Phone: (321) Website: Follow us on Facebook September 2018 OUR MISSION To welcome and lead all to Christ LCR S Children s church is resuming on September 9th during the 10:00 am worship! This program is for children kindergarten through the 5th grade. Parents drop off children at 9:50 am at the Ministry Center. Following the Sharing of the Peace, children will be brought over for the Children s Message with Pastor Jay and then will join their parents for the remainder of the service. During their time in Children s Church, students will be learning Bible stories. Children will participate in a variety of crafts, games, and other fun activities.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In a culture that has drifted further and further away from the church and weekly worship, it is important that we focus our attention on visitors. The desire to know and find peace with God is built into each one of us. So many people are searching for faith. In the months ahead, you will witness our efforts to make our church more user friendly. Many visitors have been away from church for such a long time, and some have never been inside a church building! If you stop to think about it, the entrances to our sanctuary aren t very obvious. Not only that, some people have no idea what a church sanctuary is. You will notice a subtle change in verbiage away from sanctuary to something more widely known. There s no reason someone should get lost just trying to enter worship! God calls us to patience, understand, and hospitality. It is the goal of the Evangelism Committee and Church leaders that newcomers to LCR find our signage clear and helpful, and that they feel truly welcomed and at ease the first time they visit. Along with signage we will increase our greeter training and expand our social media footprint. Our Lord said, Go, make disciples of all nations. That starts right here in our neighborhood. Remember, we are not a private club. Our mission is focused on those who are not here yet. Lets make newcomers feel welcomed. Blessings on you and yours as the summer comes to a close! Remember, we stay at one Sunday morning worship time, 10:00 a.m., through the end of September. Grace and peace be yours in abundance! Pastor Jay

Council Members Dr. Michael Miller, President Jim Stark, Vice-President Ann Fosburr, Secretary Jenn Billingham, Fellowship Property, Mitch Wilson (Buildings) Ben Troemel (Grounds) Alfred Domschke (Administration) Bill Bond, Stewardship Marilyn Sorenson, Social Ministry Kathy Lueders, Evangelism Christian Education Debbie Rescott, Treasurer (Advisor) Michelle Davis, Financial Sec. (Advisor) Angelika Domschke, Worship The Church Council meeting was held on August 14th and here are some highlights of discussions and decisions. The meeting opened with a devotion and prayer led by the pastor. Minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and approved. The agenda for the evening was reviewed. -Stewardship and Finance Committee Attendance for the combined summer worship service has fallen behind last year s attendance. Giving is not keeping up with the goals set in the 2018 budget. -Treasurer s Report Available on request and posted in the fellowship hall. -Evangelism The Burger Bash on the 3 rd Saturday of each month continues to be a success. Our advertising in the Cocoa Beach Explorer will be updated for the fall. An insert for the Sunday morning bulletin is being designed so that worshipers can take home the schedule for the week and opportunities to serve and be involved. It will also include the prayer list. The committee is looking at producing new t-shirts for volunteers (including a v-neck style for women). It was also suggested that we come up with LCR magnets to post the schedule on the fridge. -Music and Worship no meeting. However, Angelika reported to council that the larger size bulletin approved at the last council meeting did not work out. The concern was the size of the music included in the bulletin. Bill Bond suggested a program that could allow documents to be expanded that will be explored. -Fellowship Thanks to all who have helped to prepare food for recent funerals. Preparations are underway for the Tuttle funeral on September 9 th. -Social Ministry Pantry volunteers are thankful for the new AC in the pantry! The new floors are also very nice. There is still some work that needs to be done, but the atmosphere is much improved. Chickie is kind enough to do around 10 haircuts for our homeless friends each month! Marilyn visited Holy Name of Jesus Church in Indian Harbor Beach to see how they run their pantry. -Christian Education Report The Children s Church leaders met to discuss the resumption of the program in September. Children s Church will run from September 9 th until May 19 th. It was suggested that all children be given the Spark Children s Bible rather than the NRSV they had been given in the past. It was suggested that NRSVs be given out once a child enters confirmation in 6 th grade. New yard signs will be placed to guide parents to the Ministry Center. -Property The Ministry Center sign is up! Also, the exhaust fan in the outside lady s bathroom has been disconnected. It was pulling out all of the new, cool air. The breezeway ceiling has been painted and needs only one more coat. New LED lights have been installed. Dings in the worship furniture have been repaired, along with baseboards in the front overflow area of the sanctuary. Continued on next page.

Continued from previous page. Old Business -The permit for the new narthex roof has been obtained and the work should begin soon. The same company will also repair the leak in the back portion of the sanctuary and missing shingles on the Ministry Center. Work on the narthex roof should begin in the next couple of weeks. New Business - We have been asked to host the Bishop s Lenten Visitation at LCR on Saturday, April 6 th 2019 from 9:30 to noon. This would involve preparing a light breakfast and hosting a worship service. Our Music Director is available to organize the service. The council voted to host this event. - Kathy Lueders presented a request for new signage around the church property. Visitors to our church have a difficult time navigating their way around our property. It was suggested that the memorial fund of Arlene Gage be used to pay for these new signs. Arlene was an enthusiastic greeter and usher. There was discussion on one point. The council did not like using the term Worship Center for the sanctuary. A different term will be sought. All other signs were approved. - Repairs are needed on the AC units in the Ministry Center. One could either be repaired or replaced. Council voted to replace the broken unit and to fix the rest. - Debbie Rescott informed the council that a very generous bequest had been made by her mother Lois to the congregation. Debbie requested that the majority of the gift be used to update the lighting in the church. Another portion of the gift would be used to fund a choir/ music project. Council expressed their appreciation for Lois gift and her love for LCR. 8 September Is Microplastic Awareness Month Microplastic Awareness Month in September was created through the Florida Microplastics Awareness Project. The Florida Microplastic Awareness Project (FMAP) is a citizen-science project that was funded in 2015 by an outreach and education grant from NOAA's Marine Debris Program. Volunteer citizens are collecting coastal water samples, filtering them and looking for microplastics. The data collected by volunteers are put into a Google Maps database to show the concentration of these particles visually. Microplastics include plastic particles with an upper size limit of 5 mm or 1/5 of an inch. Microplastic is generated in several ways. Polyethylene microbeads used in toothpastes, facial scrubs and other personal care products are one source, because many water treatment facilities are unable to filter them out. For plastic garbage at sea, wave action and sunlight can weaken large items and break them into ever-smaller fragments. Some microplastic material is dust from construction or industrial processes carried to the ocean by wind or water. These tiny plastic particles wouldn t be such a problem if they quickly broke down into simpler chemical forms, but plastic molecules are very resilient and could remain intact to threaten the environment for thousands of years. Plastics may leach toxic chemicals, used in their manufacture, or picked up from the seawater. They might also impede an organism's ability to eat. For more information, go to -and-coastal/microplastics/ to learn more about news, training sessions and volunteer opportunities. Night Kayaking Field Trip Cancelled Due To Lack of Bioluminescence Our planned August night kayaking trip from the church dock is on hold as the bioluminescence has not been visible in the Banana River. Normally every fish moving through the water leaves a glow trail this time of year. This may be indicative of ongoing poor water quality in the Indian River Lagoon. If conditions change look for church announcements and sign up sheets at Sunday services. Upcoming Events Saturday, September 15 th Florida Coastal Cleanup, 8 am 12 pm, various sites across Brevard County. The Florida Coastal Cleanup is part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup. Keep Brevard Beautiful will provide cleanup supplies at multiple sites, including Lori Wilson Park, Shepard Park, Jetty Park and Kelly Park. Contact Sarah Hall at extension 210 or sarah.hall.kbb@gmail.com for more information.

Saturday, September 22 nd LCR Beach Cleanup, 8-10 am. Meet at the tall tikis at the end of Minutemen Causeway. Gloves, litter grabbers and buckets provided. Contact Bob by phone at (321) , or for more information. Saturday, September 22 th National Public Lands Day. Entrance/daily use fees are waived at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore. Reminders Rainy season ban is in effect until September 30 for nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer. 10 The most recently erected monument in the Veterans Memorial Plaza, Brevard Veterans Memorial Center on Merritt Island, honors the four chaplains of different faiths, who during WWII perished as their ship, the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, sank February 3, 1943 after being hit by an enemy torpedo. The Chaplains gave their life jackets to others and in prayer and singing slipped into the icy sea. The monument also pays tribute to all Military Chaplains, past present and future. The Church Council has directed the purchase and placement of two memorial bricks at the Chaplains Memorial. One with the name and location of the church and the other honoring Pastor Jay Bergstresser, for serving as a Navy Chaplain with Infantry Marines in Iraq in 2007 and Funds for the bricks were provided from the Memorial Fund of Jack Ensminger. The Brevard Veterans Council expresses appreciation for the recognition and support by the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection and invites all to visit the Plaza and Memorial center, 400 So. Sykes Creek Pkwy., Merritt Island.

Have you thought of joining our congergation? We d love to welcome you as an official member of Resurrection! If you are new to Lutheranism, Pastor Jay would be happy to discuss with you the unique features of Lutheran Christianity (a Christ-focused faith, founded and built on the Grace of God). We will be welcoming new members in the month of September. Please let Pastor Jay know if you are interested in joining. Choir & Bell Choir Rehearsals Resume Choir Rehearsals resume on: Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00 pm Bell Choir Rehearsals resume on: Monday, September 10th at 6:30 pm Please feel free to invite a friend or neighbor to choir or bell choir or both. 12 SEPTEMBER J-WALKER S NEWS! Friday, September 7th (4:30 to 12:00 a.m.) Rock the Universe We will leave church at 4:30pm and we will all go over together. Headliners on Friday are: Jesus Culture, Lauren Daigle, Toby Mac, Zach Williams, Trip Lee, and Red. The cost per person is $ Concerts and all rides are included! I'll need at least three of you to attend, so please let Sarah know ASAP if you can commit to going. Saturday, September 15th (10:00 a.m. to Noon) J-Walker s Burger Bash Support our youth ministry by preparing lunch for our friends! Please invite your friends and bring individual chips or cookies. This event counts towards service hours! For your information: J-Walkers Instagram: Evangelism Over the summer it has been fun to have the church full with both services worshiping together. What has been even better is that we continued to have new families and other folks coming to the service. We are working to help these potential new folks by surveying the property and seeing if there are better ways to inform them on where to go and how to feel comfortable on the property. The new ministry center sign is a great way to let people know. We will also be better marking key facilities including the bathrooms and will have new children s church signs. These along with the friendly greeters and ushers will help new people on the property feel informed and comfortable to join us for worship. In addition, we are getting ready for a new shirt buy for the church. We will be buying shirts to give away so that when we are out working in the community beach clean up or other activities or working on the property pantry, bike ministry, yard clean up, Burger Bash we can show that we are LCR while we are out doing the Lord s work. Look for information on Facebook, the website, in the bulletin, and next month s newsletter on how to get your shirt. (And we will have a ladies v neck version) God bless and keep the great ideas for evangelism coming! Kathy Lueders. lekjhorne@gmail.com.
