How It Works Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I thought summer would be a good time to share with you some of the core operating principles of our congregation. The best place to start is with our mission. About ten years ago, our synod s Director of Evangelical Missions was invited to LCR to lead us in developing a mission statement for the congregation. The purpose of such a statement would be to focus everything we do here, from worship to education to social outreach on a common goal. We were advised by our visiting leader to keep the statement short and memorable. After much discussion we came up with our unique mission statement: To welcome and lead all to Christ That is our guiding principle. How do we live that out week to week? You ll notice that my preaching is not on contentious social issues, politics, or appeals for funding but the life-changing Good News of God in Christ. It means that we don t hold sales or fundraisers in the community: we are here to give, not sell. It also means that our food pantry is about more than food. It s about demonstrating and sharing the love of Christ through word and deed. It means that worship isn t performance but a tool and time to express praise for what God has done in Christ and to equip us for mission. Our mission statement is behind decisions made at church council. It is the yardstick by which proposed programs and ministries are measured. It is so simple, so straight forward. Memorize it and live it. It s what we do and why we re here: That s how it works! To welcome and lead all to Christ Grace and peace, Pastor Jay

Council Members Jim Gray, President Dan Evans, Vice-President Michael Miller, Secretary Jenn Billingham, Fellowship Tina Williams, Property Angelika Domschke, Worship Jim Carlson, Stewardship Troy McCoy, Social Ministry Marcia Wilson, Evangelism Shirley Midthune, Christian Education Debbie Rescott, Treasurer (Advisor) Alfred Domschke, Financial Sec. (Advisor) The Church Council meeting was held on May 13th and here are some highlights of discussions and decisions. Our meeting began with a devotion and prayer from Pastor Jay Review of the minutes for the April meeting will be done at the June meeting. - Pastor s report highlighted the excellent attendance on Easter this year, despite the fact that most our winter friends had already returned home. - Our Financial Secretary reported that the average attendance for April was 288 per weekend. Giving to the general fund for 2014 is $22,000 higher than last year. Good news, because our budget is so much more ambitious. Giving to the Building Fund has slowed as our Led by the Spirit, Building on Love campaign comes to an end. We exceeded our goal for the campaign. - The Treasurer reported that we started April with $52,327 in the checking account. We received $32,814 and expended $25,281. Our mortgage balance stands at $677, Evangelism Greeters are needed. Please encourage members to sign up in the narthex. Our Bike Ministry needs extra mechanics as some of our regulars are on vacation. - Worship An evaluation of Holy Week and Easter was done. One idea was that children process with palms at the 11:00am service. The new Good Friday choir cantata was very well received. Thanks was expressed for the excellent music at our Easter celebration! A new usher guide will be out soon. On May 25 and June 1 our worship at the traditional service will be Service of the Word. The Sharing of the Peace is being added back into the service. Appreciation Sunday for volunteers will begin this summer. - Fellowship We fed at least 185 people at the Easter Breakfast this year. Preparations are underway for the Independence celebration to be held on July 6 th between the two services. Social time sponsorships are filling up for the summer. -Property the release forms for participants in our youth program are being reviewed. A hurricane plan is being formulated. We are very close to having all the new signage for the church property. Painting around the church is being done by some of our homeless friends. The old sanctuary door will soon be painted. -Old Business- -The issue of the need for a new church directory was brought up. We need individuals or a group willing to lead up this effort. - Our Retire the Debt program will begin this fall. In the meantime, Keith Magnuson will be coming to town to meet with the steering committee on June 22 nd. -A/C in the loft is not working properly. The company that installed it has been called in and Alfred will speak to MH Williams about the problem. -New Business- - The Independence Day Celebration has been set for July 6 th from 9:30 to 10:45 - The council voted to pay our dues to the Space Coast Conference and to fund the anticipated overage (up to a total of $1,300) on the Conference line item to be taken from an undesignated designated fund. The conference dues will be added into the budget for next year to avoid this year s confusion in paying the bill. Next Council meeting will be held on June 10, 2014.

Calling all able bodied men and women: Come join the Saturday workers in the lawn and around the Church. The exercise is wonderful especially after a storm there can be lots to pick up. Soon our season will change, the grass will spring forth and lawn mower drivers will be needed. We go from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and we provide the donuts and coffee. Hope to see you Saturday mornings or whenever you are available. If other than Saturday morning please be sure to contact Tina Williams. Go green and recycle. Drop off recyclable aluminum cans by the maintenance building west of the Fellowship Hall this helps pay for gas and mower repairs. Our worship experience called Connections is held on Sundays at 1:00pm in the Conference Center. This short service of Word and Sacrament is specifically designed for those who are unfamiliar with traditional liturgical worship or want a brief service that s less formal. Right off the beach is fine! Healing prayers with the laying on of hands and anointing is held immediately following 8:30 Traditional worship on the third Sunday of each month. Open Invitation to Join Our Prayer Chain: The Prayer Chain is an excellent way for you to serve those in need, by praying for them. The duty of a Prayer Chain member is simply to converse with God on behalf of the person the prayer is requested for, and pass on the request to the next person on your Prayer Chain List. If interested please call Marge Hinds through the church office. Please Save Your Cancelled Stamps. We are now sending them to Father Flannigan s Boys Town. When saving the stamp please leave at least 1/4 inch of the paper around them. Place them in the container on the table located on the left side of door in Fellowship Hall. Book Club will be held on Monday, June 16th at 12:00 noon. This month book will be Miss Dreamsville & the Collier Women s Literary Society by Amy Hill Heart. Please bring a sandwich and drink for yourself. Our 50th Anniversary cookbooks are for sale for $ We will have the books for sale during Fellowship time. Proceeds will benefit the Resurrection youth group. Any questions please call Jenn Billingham through the Church office. Some of you have asked me about my book, The Jesus Quiz. Although we are not selling it at the church, it is available at Amazon.com and can be ordered at Barnes and Noble Booksellers. You will not find it on the shelves, but if you go up to the register, they will order it for you and have it sent to your home. Eat, Pray, Love! Women s Bible Study meets on Thursdays at 8:30 at the Simply Delicious restaurant in Cocoa Beach. June 12th will be their last meeting until September 11th. When they resume, they will meet at Barnes and Noble on Merritt Island. For more information please contact Libby VanZino at 3eatpraylove@gmail.com or the church office. Squeak! If you need pastoral care, please let me know. With all our new members and activities (not to mention four worship services each weekend) my time is stretched pretty thin. But I will make time to visit you just let me know. What do they say about the squeaky wheel? Thanks - Pastor Jay Help us save the planet one Styrofoam cup at a time. Each coffee cup we throw away on Sunday morning (or Saturday evening) adds more waste to landfills. Instead, bring your own mug from home. You will be responsible for storing and cleaning it, but that s a small price to pay to save the planet! Cromer Counseling & Consulting Services. Marilyn Cromer, LCSW, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker will be available on Mondays and Tuesdays, by appointment only, for counseling services. Please contact her at or the church office.

Welcome to the Evangelism Corner! Pray, Care & Share: The Bike Ministry is looking for a few good men, women and young adults to help fill in for the summer months while others are away! You may learn something to help others and a skill and eventually pass it on. You can visit on the Saturdays they are open. It may open you eyes to why and what you can do! What would it be like to have no one to greet? What would you feel if you came to our church and nobody was there to greet and make you feel welcome? You will not be asked to greet every month. You will not spend more than a half hour of your time. What's more you may enjoy it! Sign up in the narthex. Your church wants you! Families come & go. Then their hearts feel the tug of a home area. They share of themselves to make ours feel this, our church your home. Mark and Lisa Noegel met in October 1992 and were married on 1 May Mark and Lisa began their married life together in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. While in Ft. Walton, they were blessed with the birth of their son (Logan) in January Shortly after Logan s birth, the Air Force then moved the family to Spangdalem Air Base Germany. In 2000, the Noegels then moved to Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. In late 2002, Mark, Lisa, and Logan were then able to find their dream base when they were moved to Patrick Air Force Base in beautiful Cocoa Beach. Although the Air Force had one more move for the Noegels in 2006, they were finally able to settle down permanently in Melbourne, Florida in The Noegels started attending Resurrection Lutheran Church after being transferred to Patrick AFB in Since then Mark and Lisa have both been on Church Council, and continue to serve on the Bike Ministry and Fellowship Committee. Lisa plays in the handbell choir and is a Worship Assistant. Mark and Logan both are ushers and greeters. Logan also serves as an acolyte and is an active member of the J-Walkers Youth Group and plays drums for the Connections Service on Sunday afternoons. We are proud to call Resurrection Lutheran Church our home. -The Noegels May you find peace and rest and renewal here at our Resurrection home. Marcia Wilson

SOCIAL MINISTRIES AT LCR Food Pantry: The featured items for the Food Pantry are listed below: 6/1-Toothpaste 6/8-Spam 6/15-Toilet Paper 6/22-Pasta & Sauce 6/29-Toothbrush The Food Pantry is also in need of miniature shampoo, conditioners from perhaps your hotel stay. Are you interesting in visiting lonely folks in local nursing homes? Call office for details. We are collecting spare change for Laundry Day. Empty your piggy bank into our laundry detergent bottles and help give someone in need the gift of clean clothes. Pantry Garden: If you have an interest in working in vegetable gardens, the LCR Pantry Garden is in full growth. Please contact Shelly Anderson or Tina Williams through the church office for further information. The Bike Ministry is requesting new and/or used bikes in any condition. These bike are given to our friends for their transportation needs. Please contact the church office to arrange to donate a bike or, if needed, arrange for us to pick it up. The bike you give, GIVES another a chance! Note: As you already know, we provide food and transportation assistance for hundreds of needy individuals and families each year. Thank you to all our pantry and service day workers! However, some of our new friends may try to pan handle you. If someone approaches you asking for money, please refer them to the food pantry. It is usually not helpful to give out cash. Be kind to the person, but refer them on to those who can get them the help they REALLY need. Thanks. DID YOU KNOW BOTH THE NEW CHOIR LOFT AND NARTHEX WERE FUNDED BY BEQUESTS FROM LCR MEMBERS? HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED INCLUDING RESURRECTION IN YOUR WILL? WE ARE DOING SO MANY WONDERFUL, LIFE-CHANGING THINGS! A GOOD INVESTMENT, A LASTING LEGACY.

The Next Step Those of us who work in the pantry and with the Living Hope Street Outreach have been blessed by meeting Christ our Lord in those we help. We love what we do, but we have noticed that some of the Children of God we serve are held back by addiction. All of our kindness and efforts only go so far. Some of these friends we serve are enslaved to alcohol. Sadly, some will always be, but those who are ready and willing to escape addiction have a chance. We have come to understand that they can only get their life back and get off the street if they get away from alcohol. Living Hope Outreach members have been in discussion with our local CB Alcoholics Anonymous group and have come up with a possible solution. Those who are desperate for help can be admitted to a four day detox program but, unfortunately, at the conclusion of that program there is rarely a bed immediately available in the 28 day program. Without an inpatient bed, they return home or to the street and usually return to drinking. At the April Church Council meeting, Living Hope Street Outreach was given permission to seek funding from our members to make this program a success. Here s how it would work -A homeless friend or pantry client is identified as a good candidate for The Next Step. That person would attend an AA meeting and then receive a ride from an AA member to the four day detox program in Melbourne. -Following that program The Next Step program at LCR would fund a 3 to 7 day stay (the average waiting period) at a local motel. -During that time they would be befriended by the AA Chapter and taken to AA meetings. -The Next Step program might also offered limited help with meals and other personal items to be taken to the 28 day program. -When a bed opened up, AA members would drive the candidate to Melbourne to enter the 28 day program. - Following that program, The Next Step would be involved with helping the recovering friend find work as they live in a halfway house. AA, of course, would be available to them for the rest of their life. If we could save just one person from addiction and death on the street it will be worth it. We are calling the fund to support The Next Step the DUO Fund (Do Unto Others). If you would like to support this lifesaving mission, make your check out to the church but put on the memo line and the outside of the envelope, DUO Fund.
