2 Dear Members and Friends of LCR, October is the month, if we ever lived up north, that we looked forward to brilliant fall colors adorning the trees. It was that magical time that we could admire their beauty, before they fell to earth and made work for us! It s a time, at least up there, when things begin to cool off. The evening breeze is crisp and we find ourselves wrapping a sweater around our shoulders. Here in Florida, we might put on socks! October also brings one of the most popular holidays of our time: Halloween. Growing up, my siblings and I always went trick-or-treating, and when we got home we were greeted by sticky candy apples served on special placemats that featured the image of a scary witch. It was all in good fun. And, as followers of Christ, victors with him over sin and death, we can enjoy this holiday without guilt. I remember my father donning a ghoul mask while wearing his clerics! I remember asking him if that was appropriate. He told me, Sure, the devil has been defeated! His comparison (you can get a sense of when I was young) was that if you wear a Richard Nixon Halloween mask, you re not honoring him, but mocking him. The devil can still cause us trouble, but he can t snatch us away from God. Make fun of Satan, he s the ultimate loser! Of course, we make a mistake when we dismiss the power of evil, but we also make a mistake when we take it too seriously. As Christians we proclaim Christ as victor over all the forces of evil. We also remember how the church long ago reinterpreted Halloween in light of Christ s victory. The name of the holiday itself comes from All Hallows Eve, the evening before All Saints Day. It was a day to visit the resting place of loved ones and to light candles on their graves. You can guess what the light of the candle symbolized: eternal life. As we trust in Christ, our future is assured. We will be taken to the place in heaven he has prepared for us (John 14:1-7). So, if God is for us, who can be against us? Who can separate us from the love of Christ and his plan for us? (Romans 8) answer: no one. So, cling to Christ and fear not! Pastor Jay
3 Council Members Dr. Michael Miller, President Jim Stark, Vice-President Ann Fosburr, Secretary Jenn Billingham, Fellowship Alfred Domschke, Property Angelika Domschke, Worship Bill Bond, Stewardship Marilyn Sorenson, Social Ministry Kathy Lueders, Evangelism Christian Education Debbie Rescott, Treasurer (Advisor) Michelle Davis, Financial Sec. (Advisor) The Church Council meeting was held on September 11th and here are some highlights of discussions and decisions. The meeting began with a devotion and prayer offered by the pastor. Minutes of the last meeting were reviewed, corrected and approved. - Pastor s report the reception of new members was delayed until October 13 th and 14 th. - Treasurer s report - $226,069 has been given toward the operating budget thus far this year. When asked whether that was covering expenses, Debbie assured us that it is. A full report is posted in the fellowship hall or available by mail upon request. - Evangelism Ann read Kathy s report. October and seasonal adds are being worked on. New directional signage is being designed and will soon be installed. Thanks to secretary, Sherry Farrell, for the design of the Children s Church yard signs. Church pens will soon be ordered to be clipped to the new pew cards. Worship Choir practice resumed on September 5 th, bells on September 10 th. December 16 th has been set as the date for the Christmas concert. Fellowship The small brown door leading into the kitchen will be kept locked on Sundays. A dangerous situation has been created as people move through the crowded kitchen to exit the fellowship hall. There are plenty of open spaces on the sign-up sheet to sponsor fellowship time. Pastor said that he will pass the sheet around during fellowship and ask for volunteers. Planning is underway for Homecoming Sunday. Social Ministry Four to eight bikes are given away each Saturday that the bike ministry is open. Many more are repaired. A volunteer is needed in the pantry on the 2 nd and 3 rd Saturdays of each month. The annual pantry Christmas party will be held Sunday, December 23 rd, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The most popular gifts given out at last year s event were flashlights and playing cards. The doors on the pantry need to be replaced. Property Committee will get a bid from Home Depot to purchase and install. Another installer was recommended by a council member. Property Light fixtures were converted to LEDs. Faucet will be replaced in the sacristy. Old Business - Roof Update the roof was measured on Monday the 10 th and work is set to begin on the 17 th. - Windows in the food pantry it was suggested that instead of bricking in the old wall AC openings that impact glass be installed. Council was in favor of that idea. -Sanctuary lighting Alfred shared the contact information for a church lighting company with an office in Merritt Island. He will gather together a committee to determine what is available and the best options for LCR. Pastor Jay will reach out to the synod office to see if they have any suggestions. Continued on next page.
4 Continued from previous page. -AC repairs in the Ministry Center. Two units have been replaced and two were repaired. Future work will be needed as the two repaired and the unit in the loft are leaking coolant. New Business - It was suggested that the term for treasurer be returned to a 3 year term. Council will consider and decide at the next meeting. - The Nominating Committee reported nominees have been found for positions opening at the end of the year. A list of nominees was presented to the council for approval. - Committee chairs were asked to have their budgets prepared by the next council meeting. - A request was made to have a reception following the Christmas Concert on December 16 th. It was explained that such a reception leads to a very late night for the Fellowship Chair (after an early morning). Options, including holding the concert earlier in the day, will be considered. - For All Saints/Homecoming Sunday one service will be held at 10:00 a.m. followed by a reception and a congregational meeting. - The Evangelism Committee asked for input on the color for new t-shirts for the church. The council recommended that we stay with the green of the last batch. - A request was received to use the Community Room for a QiGong Tai Chi class. Council approved. - Once again this year, UPS asked if they could place a season POD on church property. Council approved.
