(Colossians 4:3) Early in my ministry as a pastor, I was unsure about how to effectively share my faith. Then I read the Colossians 4:3 verse and began to pray for open doors to happen. The truth is that there had been many open doors to share my faith, but I somehow missed them. But when I intentionally prayed for open doors, God gave me one so big that there was no way I could miss it. About a day after I began to intentionally pray for open doors, I received a phone call from a high school girl named Emily. Emily had grown up in another church and had accepted Jesus into her life at a very young age. She said, Pastor, I have a friend who wants to talk with you about how she can accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. Honestly, I almost dropped the phone. I have never before, or since, experienced such a huge open door to share my faith! It just usually does not happen that way! The next day, Emily and her friend came to see me. I asked them what I could do for them and Emily s friend told me that she was interested in learning about how to accept Jesus as her Savior and Lord. So, I shared with her that God is a loving God, but that He is also holy and just. God loves us, but that sin has to be taken care of, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). I then told her that the Bible goes on to say that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). We talked some more about what it meant to live for Jesus, and I shared with her how I accepted Jesus into my life. I then asked her if she wanted to accept Jesus into her life. Without hesitation she said yes. Through smiles and tears, we prayed together and I will never forget how she made the life changing decision to live for Jesus. It was then that I asked them why they called me. Emily said, Oh you are the fourth pastor that we visited! The other three told us how to join their church, but they didn t get around to telling us how to accept Christ! There is quite a difference between the two. Actually, it does not make any sense to join a church unless you first have a relationship with Jesus! As we move forward as the church, as we move forward in building the Family Life Center, let s be sure that we are always putting Jesus first in our lives. We need to make sure that it is God s direction that we are following and not our own. When we build, we need to build to further the kingdom of God and to reach people who don t know Jesus yet. This July, as we look at the theme of Open Doors, my hope and prayer is that it will help us all to begin praying for open doors to share our faith with others. To be the church that God is calling us to be, we must be willing to go through the open doors that He gives us. That is why it is so important to go and share your faith with someone who needs love, forgiveness, or hope. Our efforts need to point to Jesus and to Him alone. All else we share is secondary to this. So please join me this month in praying for open doors and let s see what God can do through us! In Christ s Greater Love, Roger Perry From the pastor: Roger Perry

3 P A G E 1 0 The Power of Prayer P A G E 3 Upcoming Events: Have you been thinking about downsizing? Do you want to move where there are people to socialize with? Are you thinking you would be more comfortable just to know there is help at hand, if needed? Do you feel you want independent living? Do you need a little more help, such as assisted living? It is always better to think ahead and have a plan in place in case that emergency arises. It can happen to anyone at any time. And, it is important to talk about it with your family, before you HAVE to move. It will be my privilege to accompany anyone interested on tours of Park Vista and New Perspective Senior Living Facilities. I am hoping to add Overlook Village in Moline, when they open. Each of these places has both Independent and Assisted living, as well as Memory Care, all at the same place, making care easier if health concerns change. Attend one of the tours, or both! The more you see and investigate the better your decision can be. Come alone or bring a family member. In addition to the tours, we will be able to eat lunch at each facility. Just let the church office know what tour or tours you want to participate in, as well as how many people for the lunch count. We have done this before and it is always a fun, enlightening time! I look forward to visiting these places with any of you that are interested. July 20 - New Perspective Senior Living, Silvis (formerly The Light House). Meet in the EM Church parking lot at 10:45am. Tour will take place from 11:00am to 2:00pm. July 26 - Park Vista, East Moline. Meet in the EM Church parking lot at 10:30am. Tour will take place from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Matter of Balance Class Diana Lovett and I will offer the Matter of Balance class (MOB) starting September 10th. The class will be held at the East Moline Campus from 9:30am-11:30am, for eight weeks. We need at least six persons for the class to be held. Please gather your friends and call either campus office to register so we have enough workbooks for all who want to take the class. Just a friendly reminder for all our church family.please be respectful of privacy, especially when it comes to others medical issues. Please pause before you speak, and think about what you would want others to know and not know, if you were ill. Please ask permission, first, of those that are ill, to pass on information to others. Thank you. Joshua 6:1-20 Joshua had the people of God march around the city of Jericho for seven days. Prayers for the building expansion are vital! Please consider spending time praying for the new building at Christ UMC East Moline Campus. One idea is to actually pray-walk the land where the building will be. Consider walking seven times around the perimeter while praying a different prayer emphasis each time. Romania Mission Breakfast Sunday, July 15th 8:30am-12:00pm East Moline Campus Fellowship Hall The Romania Team will be cooking! The food will be great! Serving for all three morning worship services. Freewill donations will be accepted. All monies will be used to help defray expenses for the 2019 mission trip to Romania. Thank you for your support! Come hungry! Seven prayers to pray: 1. Prayers of thanksgiving and praise. 2. Prayers for blessing. 3. Prayers for wisdom, guidance, and direction for all the decisions that need to be made. 4. Prayers for protection from the spirit of offense, and for physical protection of those who will be working on the construction site. 5. 5 8 NEWS & UPDATES SUMMER GARDEN MINISTRY Seasons of Fun Luncheon Some harvesting by the 2018 Confirmation Class (pictured below) has already taken place in the garden. Radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, and several varieties of lettuce have been donated to the food pantry at the East Moline Campus. Thanks to Dan Thorngren and his passion to serve Christ through his love for plants, the garden ministry is growing! New renters this year are having the privilege to serve through this ministry and more vegetables are being grown to share. New this year in the garden is sweet corn, which Dan planted in front of the pumpkins (hopefully to discourage any vandalism). Maureen and Carl Dittmar have several plots dedicated to Christ Church. Sweet corn, several varieties of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and garlic are being raised to give away to the food pantry at Christ Church. It s not too late to join this awesome ministry. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and be prepared to be blessed as you bless others through your work. Or just stop by and see the awesomeness of all God s creation! For more information or if you have any questions/concerns, please contact Dan Thorngren ( ) and/or Carl Dittmar ( ). Featuring Creative Tabletops Shawl Ministry Update Since CUMC s Shawl Ministry began in the fall of 2004, more than 450 shawls and afghans have been distributed to people facing challenging times. Bob and Arlene Cheffer donated many years to the East Moline Campus Food Pantry. Arlene first served the pantry for many years as a volunteer and then served as director for about five years. Many of you will remember her exceptional talent of counting all the items the Scouts would bring to fellowship hall on Scout Drive Day. It was an amazing experience to watch her method of counting and to watch her hands. Many years, she had over 5,000 items to count! Bob was always nearby if she needed help with anything. Bob worked a weekly shift as a sack room volunteer for many, many years. He was always willing to do whatever I ask and then more. If there was a repair that needed to be done, he would make sure it was taken care of. He seemed to know when I needed some of his words of wisdom also! There are many of you that feel like I do they will be greatly missed! Sue Swartz SILVIS CAMPUS The Silvis Campus Food Pantry was recently blessed with a $1,000 grant from The Moline Foundation. The money will be used to provide food for the food insecure families in the Silvis area. The pantry is grateful for the assistance. If you know anyone serving on the Moline Foundation Board, please thank them and let them know how much the grant is appreciated. Soon the Silvis Food Pantry will be celebrating their 1st year anniversary. We serve, on average, 175 families each month providing food for about 600 individuals. God has blessed the pantry with a very dedicated group of volunteers! Their goal is to serve the food insecure families with love and respect, as well as, providing them with as much food as possible for their families. I want to say a big thank you to each of them!
