(Proverbs 16:9 NLT) I have been thinking a great deal about the direction of ministry recently and have been asking myself and others-- some tough questions. The questions I am asking are Why do we do what we do? Are we doing what Christ is calling us to do? What is God calling us to be in the future? How can we best follow Jesus in 2016? I really want to know. I truly want to follow God s plan. Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV) states: 11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Our task is to become a part of God s plan. It is not your plan. It s not my plan. It s God s. Anything else will fail. We just need to be open to what He is calling us to do. Are you willing to respond to God s plan for your life and His church in a positive way? Are you willing to give it your best shot knowing that God is calling us to LIVE, THRIVE, and MOVE FORWARD--growing in numbers and in spirituality? Since moving here over five years ago, I have discovered this about God s plan for us: --We are to make Christ famous by glorifying Him in all we do. --We are to be Christ followers and follow His plan, even if it is not exactly what we want. --We are to realize that sharing our faith with others is a top priority. --We are to continue to seek ways to reach others through need-oriented missions and evangelism. O C T O B E R PLANS Live, Thrive, and Move Forward --And, overall, we are to develop prayer that is based on the reality of Jeremiah 29:12 & 13 which states: 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. In a few weeks we will celebrate Vision Sunday, October 25 th, as we look forward to Leading up to Vision Sunday, Joye and I will be seeking to share with you what God has placed on our hearts. I do see a future with a hope. I see many dedicated people who love Jesus Christ and His Church and who want to take the journey that Christ has set before us. God most certainly has a plan for your life and for the church and there is a future and a hope. Now, maybe you don t see it right now. But WHAT IF? --WHAT IF the church became known as the church that makes Christ famous? --WHAT IF the church was a place where people could come and explore what it means to be a Christ follower? --WHAT IF the church was a place where people who are struggling with faith and life issues could find help, acceptance and assistance? --WHAT IF the church was a place where Christians could go deeper in their loving, living and serving for Christ? IF and WHEN that happens, then the church would be a place to LIVE, THRIVE and MOVE FORWARD. I want to invite you to join me on a journey to make Christ famous, and not ourselves as He gives us HIS invitation to be a part of His plan. In Christ s Greater Love, Roger Perry

2 Now that we have seen the movie, let s think about the principles of faith and prayer that were highlighted. Several people after seeing the movie have said, I want to be like Clara! Prayer is a powerful weapon and she demonstrated that to us. When we come to know Jesus as our Savior and Lord, our journey is only beginning. It can be easy to become wrapped up in our hectic lives and forget our first Love and the subtle Enemy who wants to keep us from Him. In the movie WAR ROOM, Tony and Elizabeth Jordan are typical churchgoers who have become complacent and, in Tony s case, even hostile, toward the God who created them for His glory. The Devil is The Romania Mission team would like to say a very big thank you! Many hearts were touched, and lives were forever changed during the fourth mission from our church in Romania, this past July 8 through 19th. After arriving in Romania, we traveled to the Point of Hope school, and had a wonderful morning visiting with our little sponsored sweeties. A few families even invited us into their homes. Very sad to see the conditions these people live in, however, lots of happiness in the community that afternoon as we passed out ice cream in front of the school. It was a very special day, but the primary focus of this trip was for us to create a Christian camp experience for 39 of Romania's orphaned children. So off to camp we went! The children arrived, they got off the bus, and we will never forget just how loving they were. From that moment on, it was a jam packed week. We played water games, slip and slide, rocket wars, lots and lots of crafts, designed to remind the children of God's love. Science experiments, 2 leg races, and an obstacle course. Our team teenagers created lots of fun games for the kids October Message Theme: WAR ROOM! subtly wrecking their lives and marriage using their own pride, busyness, financial issues, and outside temptations. Like the Jordan s, we too can forget that our circumstances or other people are not our enemies. We can also forget about the grace and love of God and about the weapons He has given us to defeat temptation. This Bible study serves as a challenging reminder of vital truths we can easily overlook or forget. Romania Missionaries THANK YOU! throughout the week. A bonfire, and a nature hike that ended with gorgeous view of Romania, and as we headed back to camp, a thunderstorm poured rain on us, but what fun we had running home in it! Minute to win it games were a blast, and we had so many God inspired talents at our talent show, Romania's got Talent! We danced and danced all week long, Drive the Bus and Hokey Pokey were among the children's favorites. You see, it was our team's job to plan all of this, and I think we did a great job. However, what we did not plan on was all the love that we would get in return. As Jim said, we each were one love to give, and got over 40 loves back. Do you know what that feels like?! We had the help of some wonderful translators, and that is how we were able to get to know these beautiful children and their stories. Stories of abandonment, abuse, hopelessness, and helplessness. Each child had a story of their own, as to how they became abandoned or orphaned. We loved each and every one of them so much, that it broke our hearts to send them back to their homes at the end of the week. P A G E 2 Through the October message series, we hope that members and guests at Christ and Silvis UMC will be called to evaluate their spiritual life and growth, uncover their true character, trust in the God of grace, declare victory over their true enemy, and find their identity in their Savior. And in addition, we will be reminded and claim for ourselves the truth that prayer is a powerful weapon. Each week s message will include a clip from the movie, and a time of reflection from the scripture in the morning message. Bible study guides that will help individuals throughout the week in their own personal time with God will be available. We would not have been able to do all this without the help of CUMC and it's congregation. Thank you for your support of our Brunch, Roast Beef lunch, and Ice Cream Social. Thanks to members of the Wesleyans for donating the needed funds to purchase picture printing paper, making it possible for each child to take home pictures of themselves, and memories of their experience with us. Thanks for helping us to pay the needed camp fees for these children to attend. Thanks to our Outreach Committee, for all that you have done. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and thank you for helping us to be the hands and feet of Jesus, once again in Romania! Very Sincerely, Tricia and Kaitlyn Danley, Jim Power, and Julie Keegan

Thoughts from the Parish Nurse. Happy October! I love the fall. The older I get the less I like the hot summer days. Give me a sweatshirt and a pair of shorts to wear and I m a happy camper! I have had lots of questions lately on Dementia. Dementia describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities that interfere with daily functioning. Please remember there are many types of dementia; not all dementia means Alzheimer s. Whenever there is a question about a person having symptoms, their medical doctor needs to be involved. Some treatable medical conditions can cause dementia symptoms such as a reaction to medications, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems, poisoning, brain tumors, anoxia or not getting enough oxygen to our organ tissues, or an infection. It s important to get it checked out as soon as noticeable symptoms occur, to get the correct medical treatment. With dementia, at least two brain functions are involved, such as memory loss and impaired judgment or language, and the inability to perform some daily activities. (Paying bills or becoming lost while driving.) Common signs and symptoms may include both cognitive (conscious mental process) and psychological changes. Memory loss Difficulty communicating or finding words Difficulty with complex tasks Difficulty planning and organizing Difficulty with coordination and motor functions Problems with disorientation such as getting lost Personality changes Inability to reason Inappropriate behavior Paranoia Agitation Hallucinations Age and family history are two risk factors that can t be changed for any of us. There is no way to prevent dementia, but there are steps that might help. Keep your mind active Be physically and socially active Quit smoking Lower your blood pressure Pursue education Maintain a healthy diet Maintain a healthy weight Avoid heavy alcohol use If you are a diabetic, keep your blood sugars under control Though memory loss can occur with dementia, memory loss alone doesn t mean you have dementia. There is a certain extent of memory loss that is a normal part of aging. Bottom line: If you feel you are having symptoms or a loved one or friend is having symptoms, encourage and seek medical evaluation. Due to the many causes of memory loss diagnosing dementia may be challenging and may require several doctor appointments. There are many tests that can be done to determine the cause. Health care providers can help list what treatments and support systems are available to help one remain independent, safe and productive once a diagnosis is obtained. In Faith, Hope, and Love, Steph Health Reminders: Blood pressures will be taken on October 4 th and October 18th. Fall Fellowship For Seniors CARE Ministry is hosting a Fall Fellowship gathering for all congregation members who are 75 years of age and older. 8 Merry Sunshine News Welcome back Merry Sunshine families! Ms. Teresa and Ms. Becky are excited for a wonderful year! It has been great to welcome back our returning families and meet many new ones. We kicked off the school year with our Open House on September 8 th. Everyone was invited to come and unpack supplies, see the new classroom set up, and meet the teachers. Classes started the following day. In our first few weeks, we ve been learning about God s miracle of transformation from caterpillar to Monarch butterfly. We have a butterfly habitat to observe in our classroom. Each day we witness how these amazing creatures change. Our chrysalises should be emerging any day! Both classes are enjoying stories about Pete the Cat. We ve ROCKED out in our school shoes, traced our names in berry blue Jell-O, practiced our colors, completed a shoe graph, and made a Pete the Cat cookie for snack. Looking ahead to next month, preschool will learn about fire safety with the East Moline fire department and visit the Shady Knoll Farm to learn about all things fall. The teachers P A G E 8 are preparing several hands-on fun fall activities with apples and pumpkins. There is no school October 12 th in observance of Columbus Day. Our annual Halloween parties will be held October 29 th and 30 th. We are looking forward to seeing all of the different costumes and parading around the church. We would like to thank all of the families who have so generously donated supplies and snacks to our program. Ms. Becky and Ms. Teresa We want to thank everyone who helped make Campaign Nonviolence a success. A total of 249 people participated in the campaign activities, and there were people from outside our congregation at every event. Whether you were involved in planning, preparations, publicity, making craft projects, or leading one of the activities, your contribution was invaluable. We are also grateful to those who offered prayer support, attended events, and read the peace-related messages. Helen Keller said, Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much Let s continue to work toward building a culture of peace... in our church, in our community and around the world. We each have an important role in this effort! Campaign Nonviolence Week! Steph Rabe and Janet Griffin

9 P A G E 9 Silvis Youth Sunday Teen Group This dynamic group, even though they re missing two young ladies (they re off to new adventures at their respective colleges), are pumped up and ready to tackle another fun and exciting year! This month, United Township High School, as well as other schools in the Quad-Cities, are participating in the Student Hunger Drive. All the high schools in the QC compete to see who can bring in the most cans. Last year, thanks to YOU, this energetic group raised 676 nonperishable food items! WOOHOO!! The goal for this year will be just one more item and will be marked on a thermometer board (just like last year) so we can keep track of the donations. Everything we raise goes to needy families in our community. It s a great cause to get involved in! The Hunger Drive starts October 3rd this year. If you would like donate a nonperishable food item, please start a pile at church (in the narthex) and one of the teens from the group will be there to pick them up at the end of the month. Thanks in advance for all your help! On Sunday, October 25, the teens will be participating in the annual UNICEF trick-or-treat fund raiser. They will be going door to door to raise funds for this worldwide organization that helps fund projects for kids around the world. Please support this project if they come knocking at your door! New this fall, the teens will host a pancake breakfast here at Silvis Church. The date hasn t been set yet, so be sure to watch this space for more information! The group has decided to donate the entire profit to the Children s Therapy Center. With the approval granted by the Silvis Church Council, Janet Oltman has purchased a new table and chairs for the third floor area of Silvis Church. These additions to the teen s meeting area will be put to good use for years to come! As you are probably aware by now, members of both churches have purchased NO PERFECT PEOPLE ALLOWED Tee shirts. They ve been such a success, the teens are wanting some for their own. Discussions have been ongoing here at Silvis for church members to purchase a shirt for one of the youth and then SPONSOR that individual by praying for them throughout the year. If you would like to volunteer to assist with either of these fun and enriching activities, please contact Janet Oltman at
