CHRIST CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP TIMES 8:00am Traditional 9:15am Traditional 10:35am Contemporary and Sunday School SILVIS CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP 10:30 Fellowship 11:00am Traditional Open Hearts Café Returns to Full Time Ministry SEPTEMBER 2014 HERE S WHAT S COMING UP! Sept. 1 Labor Day Church office closed Sept. 3 - Merry Sunshine Preschool Begins Sept. 7 All About Groups Sunday Sept. 9 Tutoring Information Meeting Sept Bluegrass Gospel Jam Sept UMW Fall Salad Luncheon Sept. 21and 28 - CARE Training After part time ministry over the past three summer months, Open Hearts Café will return to full time ministry beginning in September with a new leader, Darrel Pearsall. Open Hearts Café is one of the largest outreach ministries here at Christ Church. Donations are taken at each meal and are then given to other ministries of the church. This year alone, donations from Open Heart s have been given to the Mexico mission trip, youth scholarships, food pantry, Haiti mission trip, and the youth mission trip. Open Hearts Cafe has a huge impact on our church and our community, with each meal serving between 100 to over 150 people. Open Heart s Cafe models our overall Church strategy that Pastors Roger and Joye have talked to us about. It is a place where you can come and feel welcome, a place where you can connect with others and a place where you can serve. Darrel Pearsall As many of you know, this summer Open Hearts Cafe ministry cut back to a 2 meal a month schedule. We are happy to announce that as of September, Open Hearts Cafe will be returning to serving a meal every Wednesday of the month. This is a huge ministry and takes a lot of volunteers. We have a phenomenal group of cooks and volunteers that have been faithfully serving for years and we are so grateful for them. But we need your help. First and most importantly we need your prayers - please pray that this ministry will continue to bring honor and glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and to make Christ famous in the Quad Cities. Please also pray for our cooks and volunteers for good health and help in planning and preparing each meal, and protection for each one. Please pray for and consider being a volunteer. We need more volunteers to serve in a number of ways. You may want to help prepare a meal, serve food, serve drinks, help with clean up. You may only be able to help for an hour or two, you may want to help every week or maybe every other month. You may be able to only help summer or winter months or you may wish to be on a call list in the event that someone can't make it. You may want to make phone calls on the Monday before to ensure that we have enough help. We even have cooks who will teach you how to cook for 150 people. If you want to serve we will find a way for you to serve and this is an easy way but important way to begin or continue service to our Lord. So please prayerfully consider joining Open Hearts ministry. If you are interested or just want more information about how you can serve, please write on your attendance card: OPEN HEARTS or call Darrel Pearsall at

From the Pastor. ADAMFEST: Out of Brokenness Comes Blessing I usually don t spend my Sunday afternoons in a parking lot. But there I was parking myself where cars usually are and I was not the only one. There were hundreds of people from all over the Quad Cities area walking around or sitting in lawn chairs. We all came to enjoy a day of good food and great music. There was a booth selling cookies and over a hundred different items that would go to raffle winners. I even did a little dancing with the associate pastor! What could possibly bring out a bunch of people on a Sunday afternoon to a parking lot? ADAMFEST. The event was an outdoor benefit concert for Rock Island County Mental Health Research. It was not sponsored by Christ Church, but we claimed it as a significant part of our ministry efforts in August and I am so proud of all in the church who participated in the event. Out of the brokenness of grieving the loss of their son Adam--George and Gloria Smith were inspired to do something that would a have a positive impact. Through the event, and through their own brokenness, George and Gloria have been blessed and have become a blessing. I was even able to witness their empathy going out to others who are walking a similar path of grief in their own lives. As I watched, I realized that God is now using them to help others through their pain and brokenness. The shirts that George, Gloria (and others in the family) wore had Adam s picture on the front and an Eckhart Tolle quote on the back. The The Iron Men of Christ Church For the soul purpose of assisting men to become all God is calling them to be. To the Men of Christ Church: There are days when I wonder if I might be moving backward instead of moving forward in my relationship with God. Perhaps you feel the same way at times. You may desire more of God in your life and in your family, but you do not know how to go about getting it. Also, I believe that God is calling us to rise up and take the land for Jesus Christ. But in order for that to happen, we have to develop spiritually as men of God. That is why I am starting a new group for men who desire to make a stand for Christ in their lives. This will be an opportunity to help you spiritually grow in your faith-walk. By working on becoming the man that God quote was exactly what the day was about--awareness. It read, Awareness is the greatest agent for change. PAGE 2 George, using his incredible talent as a musician and his influence to gather some of the greatest musicians in the Quad Cities area, came up with an event that made us aware and it truly was a blessing. Out of the brokenness came blessing. After seeing this brokenness turn into a blessing in such a vivid way as the ADAMFEST, I am excited about the Broken and Blessed series this September. We will be exploring how God used the imperfect family in the Book of Genesis to change the world. We will see how we can claim that story as our own and how God can take our brokenness and turn it into a blessing. I would encourage you to read Pastor Joye s article adjacent to this page to learn more about the Bible study opportunities that will be offered and I hope you will be part of one of them. Awareness is truly a great agent of change. This September, you will be challenged to be a change agent in your family as you discover that every family can be used by God to bring blessing to a hurting and broken world. As of this printing, George reports that ADAMFEST has raised $20,000! Thank you!!! From one who is Broken and Blessed among you, Roger Perry, Lead Pastor has created you to be, you will learn how to become a prayer warrior for your family, your community, your church, and your pastor. There will be spiritual growth and accountability as we band together to become more than just sideline fans of Christ. We will spend our time exploring what it really means to be called a Christian. If you are ready to take a bold step in your spiritual journey, I would like to meet with you on Thursday, September 4 th at 6:00 p.m. at the church. Food will be provided as we talk about the Iron Men of Christ Church movement. So that we can prepare, please let me know if you are coming. Rev. Dr. Roger Perry Proverbs 27:17-- Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Broken and Blessed Moses got a burning bush. I got a post card in the mail addressed to the current resident of th Ave., East Moline. Printed on the card was an advertisement for a Bible study about the book of Genesis. The title of the study was Broken and Blessed. I am always on the look out for Bible studies that I believe would be a blessing to members of our church family, so I ordered a copy. What I didn t expect to find was a burning bush!! I found myself on Holy Ground as I read the book and worked through the pages of the Bible study. I was inspired, taught, and given direction for my own life and family. I found myself looking forward to each day s opportunity to do more of the study. As I thought about who else could be blessed through the study, I began to wonder about the possibility of making this a CHURCH WIDE study. But on the back side of the book it states Abingdon Women. Through a little bit of Google searching, and some phone calls to Texas, I connected with the Woodlands United Methodist Church in Woodlands, Texas. The author of the study, Rev. Jessica LaGrone, was an associate pastor on staff at the church (one of eight clergy on staff.whoa this was a seriously BIG CHURCH). I was informed that Rev. Jessica LaGrone no longer served as a pastor at the church because she had recently taken a position at Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. What I also found out from my phone conversation in Texas was that many members of the Woodlands UMC (both men and women) had been blessed by the Bible study, Broken and Blessed. Recently, I was able to Rev. Jessica LaGrone, and ask for her opinion about the use of her written work in a church setting. She was excited to learn of my own experience and my interest in using the study in our local church. She then stated let me share a secret with you.i wrote the Bible study for my local church and I preached a message series that corresponded with the chapters in the study. It was Abingdon s decision to market it as a women s Bible study. SO..I had been right all along! Jessica wrote this in her introduction to the Broken and Blessed Bible study book: Genesis was one of my favorite books of the Bible long before I realized that all of the main characters in it are related. Genesis traces the branches of a single, perfectly imperfect family and God s constant and unfailing love for them. The Book of Genesis serves as a kind of scrapbook for this family, recording both the good and the bad pictures of their experiences through the years. As I began to read PAGE 3 the Genesis narrative as a family story, it helped me to understand that God doesn t wait for us to be perfect before loving us. I decided that if God chose to use this unusual family for His purposes, then maybe He wants to use me and my family to change the world too.maybe you sometimes feel as though your family came right out of a soap opera, like the characters and antics you find there could win the prize for putting the fun back in dysfunctional. If so, this study is for you. Maybe you feel like you ve had a uniquely normal family experience, nothing too far out of the ordinary. Maybe there are a few black sheep here and there in your family tree, but for the most part you are blessed by family who have loved you and given you a stable foundation to build on. If so, this study is for you. Or maybe you consider yours to be the perfect family. Perhaps you re thinking, There s not even a moderately gray sheep in my family, much less any black sheep. If that s you, just remember: there s at least one in every family; if you can t figure out who it is, chances are it s you! So if you re in denial, this study is for you too! This study is for anyone who wants to discover the roots of our biblical family tree, to trace the generations of Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Esau, and Joseph and his brothers. It s for anyone who wants to ask the question, Could God use my family to change the world? As we read and study together, we ll learn that because the title Child of God belongs to us, this Genesis family is our family. And because of that, we are infinitely more blessed than broken.before you begin this journey, give God permission to work on your heart and your life. Offer yourself to Him and express your desire for Him to bring restoration, healing, and blessing wherever it is needed in your life and the life of your family. May God richly bless you as you study His Word and discover how God can bring blessing from brokenness. (pp. 6-7, Broken and Blessed, Jessica LaGrone, Abingdon Press) Starting Sept. 7, and continuing for six weeks, we will be using the family stories found in Genesis for our Sunday morning message themes. Copies of the Bible study resource, Broken and Blessed will be made available for individuals. A wide variety of times, days, and locations will be scheduled for individuals or couples to join with others in small group settings to share their insights, questions, and reflections on what they are learning through their own Bible study time. We hope that this study and our upcoming message series will be a blessing to you, your family, and to our church family. Rev. Joye Perry

Thoughts from the Parish Nurse. Who is your I.C.E.? (In Case of Emergency) If you are in an accident or a health crisis at the church, who would we contact first? If you became ill during Sunday worship, it will help your family or I.C.E. friend if we have a way to reach them. This isn t just for the young or the older church family member; it is for all of us, so we can care for each other better. Please take some time to fill out the Health Facts Card that I will have by the doughnuts and the kiosk areas, starting this September. If you do not want to complete the entire card, please at least fill out the portion listing your name and emergency contacts. An emergency contact can be family or a good friend that knows your medical history such as whether you are a diabetic, have a history of heart problems, or have had seizures in the past. This can be very important information if you have no one with you at church. After filling the card out, please carry the card on you at all times. A great place to put it is in your billfold next to your driver s license; the card folds very easily to fit in the wallet. If a true emergency occurs and you are not able to speak or remember the telephone number of your I.C.E. person, having it in the billfold will make it much easier and faster Steph Rabe CUMC Parish Nurse to call your loved ones and get the help you need. It helps in time of emergency to also have any medical problems listed along with current medications. If the Emergency Medical Team is called it helps them evaluate you quicker knowing what medical problems you may have and medications you are currently taking. Medications include all prescription, over the counter, herbs and supplements. But because medications can change often, (as well as emergency contact persons and telephone numbers) please fill this portion out in pencil so CARE Ministry Training Offered this Fall Training for new CARE Ministry team members is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21 st, and Sunday, Sept. 28 th, 1:00 4:00 p.m., in room 14. This 2-part series of classes includes information on communication skills, grieving, Christian caregiving, the use of prayer and scripture, and community resources. To register for CARE training, please Christmas Scarf Project It s time to plan ahead for Christmas, and we hope you will help with our Christmas Scarf Project. Scarves of all sizes are needed. They can be knitted, crocheted, made of fleece, or purchased. Please bring your scarves to the church office by Friday, contact Janet Griffin (309/ or djgriffin@mchsi.com) or Steph Rabe (309/ or ravensrabe@gmail.com). CARE Ministry was initiated in the fall of The CARE team provides support and encouragement to congregation members through a variety of activities: fellowship groups at local senior apartment buildings, November 14 th. They will be dedicated at a worship service and then distributed to children in our tutoring program, children who are served through our Angel Tree outreach, clients of Winnie s Place, and families who come to our food PAGE 5 medications can be deleted and added as your doctors change them. It is a great idea to review the card every six months. Please let me know if you have any questions or need help filling the card out. I would be more than happy to help you list your medications. Thank you, in advance, for carrying emergency numbers. Hopefully your I.C.E. person will never be needed. 8 All About Groups Sunday September 7th! Join us on Sunday morning between services on September 7th in the Fellowship Hall to learn more about the small groups that will be offered at Christ Church this Fall. Small groups have always been a part of our faith. Small group community is the heart and core for becoming the people of God. Our life is not meant to be lived alone. God hates loneliness. You were created to experience life together with other people and that s why, at Christ Church, we encourage you to jump into a small group. At Christ Church, we have groups in all shapes and sizes. We have special interest groups as diverse as chess, knitting, scrapbooking and bluegrass music. We have long-standing groups that have been meeting together for many years and any of their members can attest to the truth of that statement. We have new groups forming where you can hang out, study the Word and pray together. Many of these are short-term groups, meaning that you can gather for a Bible study that may last 6 to 8 weeks and then you can move to another group, stay together or take a break. The commitment level is up to you. Many of our small groups will be using the resource Broken and Blessed How God Used One Imperfect Family to Change the World by Jessica LaGrone. This is a 6 week study of Genesis and will PAGE 8 coordinate with our pastors sermon series beginning in September. This is a great way to test the waters. Also, God may be calling you to start a small group. If so, we can help you with training and resources. Just see on of our pastors or Dean Sutton and we ll help you get started on the right foot. No matter where you are in life, there s a group for you. So How do you connect? The best way is to come to our All About Groups fair to be held on Sunday morning, September 7th. Group displays will be placed in Fellowship Hall for you to meet leaders and members and pick one that is right for you. This includes LOTS of tomatoes and cucumbers, some of which has been donated to the area food pantries. This year s goal is to harvest 3,000 pounds. Looks like Dan s well on his way! Silvis church is the proud recipient of the 2014 Zinnia Contest! We were awarded the City Award based on variety, sizes and bold color. Kudos to Dan for all his hard work in planting and maintaining the gardens around the church.

GOD SIGHTINGS AT SILVIS Because of the Silvis church family s continued love and support of the children in the Silvis school district, $ was collected on just one Sunday morning after a financial need of purchasing health hygiene products was identified by Mr. Michael Hughes, school principal. When Pastor Joye delivered the check later that week, Mr. Hughes was so appreciative of our rapid response and the generosity of the donation. Please continue to keep the school and staff in your prayers. PAGE 10 These two young men, Levi Perry and Shawn Dopler, arrived at Silvis church on Wednesday, August 27, to tirelessly carry this ping-p0ng table and LOTS of other items to the fellowship hall from the third floor youth area. These items are going to be donated to the Salvation Army, who will pick them up here at the church on Wednesday, September 3. This begins the process of renovating the third floor youth/children s area. With funds from the Sharon Glassman trust, remodeling and new equipment will be purchased for use in those areas. I have had several conversations with Ann Knight on the phone since beginning my ministry here at Silvis UMC. We had shared prayers and conversation from time to time, and especially at the time of her husband s death. I have heard testimony of praise and thanksgiving about Ann and Jim Knight from members of the church. During one of our long distance phone calls, I asked Ann if she would mind if I stopped by to see her if I found myself in the Springfield area.she graciously said Welcome! A few weeks ago, I had a meeting at the conference office in Springfield, so I called her up and she was actually just on her way home at that moment. We finally had a face to face meeting in her home. What a blessing to actually hold her hands and pray with her to actually give her a REAL HUG! She was so thankful for the flowers we sent to the funeral home when Jim, her husband, died. I took a quick picture of Ann (pictured to the left) to share with all of you. She thanks you for your prayers and still considers Silvis UMC one of her favorite places in life. Welcome to Silvis UMC, Delight Gillman!! Linda Jones has been a long time friend with Delight. Delight came to visit Silvis UMC the first time because of Linda s numerous invitations to join her for morning worship. She had attended several times with Linda, and then there was a weekend when Linda would be out of town. Delight remembers thinking to herself, I won t go to church this weekend because Linda won t be there.but then she decided that she felt at home in the church without Linda s presence. It was a turning point for Delight. We welcome Delight into our church family, and we are glad she is one of us! Here are some interesting facts about Delight. She enjoys walking, water aerobics, counted cross stitch, knitting, and volunteering to help others. She has already volunteered to help with some projects here at SUMC and she regularly volunteers at the Children s Therapy Center. Delight retired from an active career in the nursing profession. She was married to Wayne Gillman for 43 years. In recent years, he was her one and only patient as she was his care provider in their home until his death on December 5, KUDOS TO KAY GOODWIN! The Administrative Church Council affirmed and approved Kay s desire to begin her lay servant ministry training. She will be attending the Basic class on September in Annawan. We encourage you to keep Kay in your prayers as she attends this class.

These funds will be used to help further local, national and international missions. Fran Riley, from KWQC, showcased our event on his program which aired on Thursday, August 14. Not to worry, you can still see the video clip The Material Girls at Sharon Ade was the high bidder ($610) on the Happy Is The Home quilt (an original design by Joyce Nevins). Bonnie Delp had the winning bid ($210) on the Tropical Rainforest quilt. The door prizes were won by Kay Etzel (tea towels) and Mary Ade (craft bag and 2015 purse calendar). Congratulations to our Blue Ribbon Winners: Cindy Kincaid for her quilt and Joyce Nevins for her wall hanging. Many thanks to all who helped so tirelessly with the Quilt Show on Wednesday, August 13. September 11 Dorothy Batten will host this event at her home, th Avenue Court, East Moline. Please call her at if you need directions to her home. Meetings begin at 8:30 am with a breakfast for all to enjoy. A short business meeting is held, followed by a lesson time. It s a great time to meet new friends and enjoy established friendships. Silvis Retirees Group September 12 ~ 12:30 pm A delicious catered luncheon of swiss steak and all the fixings (from Mulkey s Restaurant in Rock Island) is served in the fellowship hall, followed by an interesting presentation. Tickets for this event are $8.00 (payable at the door). Everyone is welcome to attend. Please call Jean or Norm Neely at (309) with any questions. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Permit No. 93 East Moline, IL U.S. September Prayer Concerns Sunday: 2 Timothy 3-7, Hebrews 4:12 God speaks through the Bible, His Word, but we have to be self-disciplined as an athlete by committing to be in scripture every day. Make a commitment to daily scripture reading this month. Pray asking God (Holy Spirit) to show you His timeless truth & the application of scripture in your life as you read. Monday: 1Timothy 2:1-5 Pray for our church leadership (lay and pastoral) along with our civic/governmental leaders to rely on Christ, the one & only true mediator & to make decisions that will lead to Reaching Others for Christ s Kingdom. Tuesday: 2 Timothy 1:13 & 14, Psalm 114 Paul knew suffering for Christ. He knew Timothy would also suffer for Christ & reminded Timothy that the Holy Spirit in him would be all he needed. As Timothy was transitioning to his new leadership, he most likely was fearful & anxious. Life is full of transitions, fear, and anxiety. But, we have also been provided with all we need during these times. Ask God to reveal His presence (Holy Spirit) and work in your life & the church in big ways today. Ask Him for the faith to believe without doubt in His revelation of self to you. Where God Calls, He provides!!! Wednesday: Psalm 78:4, Psalm 34:18, Psalm 119:88-90a Christ was criticized often for the people he had close to him, tax collectors, thieves, prostitutes, We may also be scorned or criticized by our association with the broken & crushed in spirit, but we are to follow Christ s example. Pray that you neither criticize nor scorn the broken, but lovingly accept them as the child of God they are in Him. Teach others Christ s love & not the world s rejection! Thursday: 1 Peter 5:6-10 Just as the saints (believers before us), we must be patient, steadily doing the work God has given us to do & allow God to choose the best time to change our circumstances. Ask God for patience to endure the difficulties of life & for faith in His perfect timing. Pray for protection around the world & at home for those suffering the sins of this world; i.e. disease, poverty, discrimination, persecution,. Friday: Proverbs 11:24-25 Those who give freely of their possessions, time, and energy will be blessed by God through freedom from enslavement from their possessions. Ask God to reveal: Where am I to give more freely? Where have I become enslaved to caring and maintaining my possessions? Where and how am I to break my chains to these possessions? Saturday: John 15:11, John 17:13, Psalm 16:11, Hebrews 12:28-29 The key to being unshaken in this world & continuously joyful is living intimately with God. Just as any relationship in this world, you must work at your relationship with God. We do this by praising and worshiping Him daily. Today spend significant time worshiping & praising God the Father, God the Son, & God within us (Holy Spirit). Lift His Name on High for the entire world to see! Give God the Glory!!! The Church office and food pantry will be closed on Monday, September 1st in honor of Labor Day. We will reopen at 9am, Tuesday, September 2nd. A 90th Birthday Open House for Marge Wright will be from 1-3pm, Sunday, September 7th in Fellowship Hall. Please stop by to wish Marge a Happy 90th Birthday!
