Leading Article Dear Friends, Summer is here at last and summer always brings with it some very special moments in our churches as we celebrate with couples who come to us to be married. Marriage is a blessing from God that binds people together within the love of God not just the couple who come to be married, but their families and friends. The words of the marriage service describe marriage as a gift of God in creation, through which husband and wife may know the grace of God as they grow together in love and trust. The promises the bride and groom make to one another are at the heart of a wedding. They promise to love, comfort, honour, protect and be faithful to one another for as long as they both live. That means that they are promising to put the other person at the centre of their own lives and to cherish them, whatever they have to face together. We all know that life contains difficult times as well as great times, whether we re married or not. Couples who marry promise one another that they are in it for life and that whatever life throws at them, they will face it together. Those are big promises to make, which is one reason why many couples choose to marry in church. When a wedding happens in church there s a spiritual dimension right at the heart of the service. During the ceremony we look to God and ask Him for His guidance. God s blessing on the newly married couple and their future together is important to many people, whether or not they go to church regularly. At one in five church weddings the couple already have children, so this might also be a time to ask God s blessing on the whole family at the beginning of a new stage in your lives together. It s even possible for children to be christened during a wedding for a real family celebration! For those of us who are vicars, it s both a duty and a great privilege when we join a man and woman together in marriage so that they become one. We will do all we can to welcome you if you would like to be married in church. Sometimes people don t always realise that you don t have to have been christened or go to church to be married in church. If you want to check if you can be married in one of our Team churches, just get in touch with one of the clergy and we will be delighted to hear from you. Getting married is a big step in anyone s life, not to be taken lightly. As brides and grooms are getting ready for their big days in churches here in the Shaftesbury Team and further afield, here s a prayer you might like to pray for anyone you know who s getting married this summer. 3

Lord, we pray that as (bride s name) and (groom s name) get ready for their wedding day, not only would their love for each other grow stronger, but they would become more and more aware of your great love for them. Amen. With every blessing, Helen P.S. There is lots more information about getting married in church on 4

Team News A Message from Simon Wilkinson Many of you know that Simon Wilkinson is a former Rector of the Shaftesbury team. Since we heard of his diagnosis and prognosis, St. Peter s prayer chain have been holding him and Becky in prayer. We had such a moving response to our last enquiry that it was suggested that (with Simon s permission ) we put it in Keyring, I have had a good 3 weeks or so now and am enjoying Celebrating at the cathedral fortnightly; and at the local church from time to time. The best bit is the prayer time each morning and evening. I pray in my conservatory each morning, and when the sun comes up, it floods me with warmth like the warmth of the love of God. I really love it. It has been one of the greatest blessings of the cancer, giving me the time and opportunity to spend so much more time in prayer - praying rather than saying prayers if you get my meaning. Alleluia Simon L.P.A News LPAs attended a quiet day at Grove Farm, Melbury Abbas. Sarah welcomed everyone with refreshments on arrival. The day was led by The Rev. Mary Ridgewell and provided a good opportunity for prayer, rest and quiet reflection and a chance to walk or sit in the beautiful gardens. The very enjoyable day ended with tea and home made cakes. Our grateful thanks to Sarah for her hospitality and Mary for leading our day. Gill Waine. 7

Christian Aid Says Thank You So ends another Christian Aid Week and a huge vote of thanks is due to everyone who donated, collected and prayed for the success of the Week. And as a follow-up we thought you would like to know how contributions are being used in various places around the world. In MalawI a million trees will be planted as part of a Christian Aid project to tackle deforestation and build the resilience of communities prone to climate change and natural disasters. In Brazil, El Salvador and Bolivia funds have been released to Christian Aid partners to help tackle the spread of the Zika virus. In Iraq partners are providing food and items such as blankets and fuel to displaced Iraqis. In the Lebanon, Christian Aid continues to support some of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees including people with disabilities and women who have experienced genderbased violence. In Nepal work continues to train almost 2,000 people how to build earthquake resistant homes following the devastating earthquake one year ago as well as promoting basic first aid and hygiene awareness, such as how to treat unclean water and build temporary toilets. And finally, the story of Morsheda living in an isolated river-island community in Bangladesh. She has four children and has lost her home to the river countless times. Once, when a torrent was about to destroy her home, she had to escape with her children by fashioning a makeshift raft from a banana tree and putting her youngest daughter in a cooking bowl to float her down the river to safety. Christian Aid is helping Morsheda and her neighbours build stilts to raise their homes above floods and give them livestock, seeds and agricultural training as part of a Christian Aid Home Safety Package. These are just a few of the areas in which Christian Aid is doing so much to help restore hope, life and dignity. It couldn t be done without your generous gifts of time and money. There are other ways too. Visit Christian Aid on line, and find out how to join the campaigns for important projects, such as action on climate change and tax evasion issues. Thank you again. 11 St Peter s Annual Parochial Church Meeting Jessica Sims reports..you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.. (1 Cor 12:27) Volunteering (undertaking new responsibilities wholeheartedly) isn t something which comes naturally to most of us, myself included. Especially when the same person has done the same job for the last ten years! As Christians we will wholeheartedly pray for a solution, for the right person to step forward but filling our diaries with yet more responsibilities is, quite frankly, terrifying. When the vacancy of PCC Secretary was announced it was surely a matter of time before I was approached. A PCC member myself, I was very much aware of the secretarial responsibilities involved at meetings the attention to detail, recording and processing of information. I didn t know what to do, so I prayed about it... wholeheartedly. Sometimes, alas, our spiritual tuning forks just aren t working. I suspect in my case it s more a question of me disconnecting the aerial (subconsciously or not as the case may be!) an anti-responsibility self defence mechanism? Who knows, perhaps writing about these issues as secretary would help my understanding of them - for the good of the PCC and for St Peter s church? Anyway, to cut a long story short, I said yes (and imported two enormous bags of paperwork and an equally enormous book about Practical Church Management into my life!) Three weeks into the job and my eyes have been opened to the amount of work which goes on behind the scenes in St Peter s, indeed in any church. From flower arranging to singing, from the prayer chain to Sunday school, lay readers, sidesmen, welcomers, pastoral carers, Key Ring co-ordinators, Electoral Roll officers, Deanery Synod representatives, Doughnut Saturday organisers the list is endless... And I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all of these people (undertaking their responsibilities wholeheartedly!) An especially warm welcome to St Peter s new church warden, Florence Mudoti; to PCC member, Emma Smith; to Gill Hunt as Electoral Roll Officer, and to Deputy Church Warden, Ros Wetherilt. A vote of thanks also goes to those continuing their responsibilities - Treasurer, John Hunt and Church Warden, Ros Wilson. This is also the perfect opportunity for me, on behalf of St Peter s, to thank those who are standing down - Joe Rumble who (together with Ros Wilson) kept St Peter s going through the interregnum, and, last but not least, my Secretarial confidante, Elizabeth 11

Selwood, from whom I have inherited some impressively efficient filing. Thank you. Pastoral care Over the last few months the PCC has set up a small committee to review Pastoral care. There is to be a special service at 9.30 on Sunday 19 th June. At that service new Pastoral contact cards will be introduced and explained. Those involved in visiting and praying will be commissioned for Service. It is also an opportunity for others who feel they have a talent in this service for the community to reflect if this is an opportunity for them to become involved with this valuable work. St. Peter s internal mail Some of you who have recently joined our congregation may not yet have come across our church letter rack. It sits between the library and the door to the bell tower. Shelves are labeled A-F, G-L, M-R, and S-Z. It s very useful for circulating information, rotas, notes to friends, returning small items to church members, etc. The Mission to Seafarers - St Peter s Support Team Our knitters are busy - needles at the ready Row by row, so even and steady, Knit one, purl one, or maybe just plain, Don t drop a stitch - it s such a pain! Gloves, scarves and hats to fill the box, Sent up to London to replenish their stocks. Destined for seafarers, to keep them warm Whilst sailing the seas in the face of a storm. The Seafarers Mission takes on the role Of caring for sailors, both body and soul. Offering comfort in ports far and wide. Practical help they aim to provide, To the merchant folk who are far from home, Missing their loved ones and feeling alone. So pick up your needles and help us today To fill the next box when it goes on its way! MSR For more information, please ring Marigold Rumble on or joerumble@btinternet.com. Looking forward to hearing from you! 12

What s it all about? Why does the Team hold a retreat every year? Who is it for? Isn t it just escapism? What s it got to do with my day-to-day life as a Christian? Each year, the Team organises an annual retreat when people are invited to step back from their ordinary lives and take time to listen and learn and reflect. What is that actually like and why do people go? Every year, the retreat has a different theme. Last year, Revd Helen talked about stepping backwards to go forwards and what it means to be everyday disciples. This year, Revd Pam is inviting us to think about bread for the journey. Once again the weekend will be at Abbey House, Glastonbury ( ). If you would like to make a booking, you ll find a form on the other side of this page. If you would like to know a bit more, without committing yourself - or if you re just curious - you might like to come to the informal get-together being planned in July. We ll be having a social evening, with a bring and share supper, for anyone who s interested in the retreat: people who have already booked; people who are thinking of coming but aren t quite sure; and people who would just like to know a bit more. There won t be any pressure to sign up. It will simply be a chance to find out more and talk to Revd. Pam and some of the other people who are going. Look out for details in the next issue of The Key Ring. 13

The Shaftesbury Team Autumn Retreat The total price for the weekend is 144 per person. Please pay a deposit of 30 per person when you send the booking form. The last date for booking places is Friday 26th August 2016 and the full amount needs to be paid by the end of August Cheques should be made out to: Shaftesbury Team Ministry. 15 The Shaftesbury Area Talking Newspaper for the Blind and Partially Sighted A search for Editors Clearly, you enjoy reading Key Ring; do you also enjoy reading any of your local weekly newspapers? If so, we wonder if you could help us on the Shaftesbury Area Talking Newspaper (SATN) Team. We are looking for volunteers who, once every six weeks or so, would be happy to spend a few hours scanning three or four local papers for entertaining and informative articles that are suitable for inclusion in our Talking Newspaper. After selection, the task involves cutting and pasting the articles onto plain paper. Opportunities for some creativity also exist in that each chosen article needs a brief written introduction. Further creativity is possible through the selection of interesting photographs and other images from the local papers and writing descriptions of them. Copies of the local papers, ahead of publication, are available for collection in Shaftesbury early on Thursday mornings. Selections and scripts are then required to be delivered to the SATN office in Father s House, Christy s Lane, Shaftesbury, by 3pm the following day. The creative work can therefore be performed in the comfort of one s own home - or indeed wherever one chooses. Full mentoring is provided so if you feel that this activity might interest you, or you would simply like to learn more, do please contact our Chief Editor, Colin Francis, on ; he will be delighted to hear from you. Open Garden with Coffee for the Friends of North Dorset Women s Refuge Please come and enjoy a wander in the gardens at Grove Farm House, Melbury Abbas on Wednesday 29 th June from till Noon. The road is open again and access is easy so please do come! We have been given a vast number of bags of all sorts so they will be on sale for 1 each as well as Bring and Buy We need to raise 1000 each month to fulfil our commitment to the residents in the Refuge and the coffers are low. Your generous donations will be welcomed! More details from Sara Jacson

St James Church Pilgrim Service On Sunday 8 th May the theme for the service was Feeding the Hungry. Cup & Sourcer Saturday morning coffee 10.0 am pm in church. Suggested as fundraiser/ create community awareness of St James; also good for tourists on their way through St James to the end. Revd Simon also hoped a weekday morning could be arranged, either Tuesday or Thursday for the local community to meet and chat singles, retired, recently widowed, mums with small children waiting for lunchtime pick-up from school. A good opportunity for outreach. A rota of volunteer helpers would need to be enrolled but everything else required is on hand. St James proposes to add an attachment to the pew sheet to see if there is interest in the concept as helpers or participants. Promotion could also be at the Open Gardens in June, through the Millennium Gardens, TI Centre and Parish noticeboard opposite Two Brewers. St James Allsorts Sale For Msaada This took place in St Peter s Hall on a sunny Saturday in May, and as the name implies, there were allsorts of things to interest and attract buyers, thanks to some very generous contributors. In addition there was a selection of delicious home-made cakes and some good prizes on the raffle stall which encouraged customers to have a flutter. A very satisfying sum of 400 was raised for the work of Msaada in Rwanda where communities are still suffering the effects of the genocide. Msaada are currently raising money to provide impoverished families with the gift of a high yielding in-calf dairy heifer (Friesian/Holstein). Each recipient passes on the first female calf to a neighbour and multiple benefits follow milk brings protein to the diet and each family s overall health improves. The surplus milk is sold, generating 2-3 per day from one cow; the manure can be used in a simple biogas converter to provide fuel for cooking and lighting, so no more trees are cut down, and as the residue is an excellent fertiliser local crops improve as a result. The aim is self-sufficiency thus resorting dignity and hope for the future. We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped in any way with the sale and particularly the willing team who set up, manned the stalls and cleared up afterwards. Thank you all. Sue Ballett Reminder that the following take place on a regular basis: 1st Tuesday 7.00pm Reflective Prayer Co-ordinator Jenny Webb. 1 st Wednesday 2.00pm to 2.20pm, Abbey School Worship in church (to include Open The Book, Paul Cooper) Revd Simon and Janet Wilson. Parish Map A great deal of drawing and colouring has been going on and we have now assembled lots of pictures of the buildings and activities, birds and animals and plants in Compton Abbas and Twyford. They are currently being combined with the base map to produce what we hope will be a faithful reflection of the things we value about our parish. When the map is nearing completion, there will be a village coffee morning so that people can come and see how it is progressing; and when it is completely finished, we hope there will be copies on sale in aid of village funds. Watch this space! Sorry about the Team Service We are very sorry that it was not possible for us to host the Team Service at St Mary s on 29 th May. We had more or less overcome our problem with parking and we thought it would be possible to have the service here, but it turned out that too many of us were away. 24 Quiet Day for the Lay People of Blackmore Vale Deanery When was the last time you went on retreat? When was the last time you enjoyed a Quiet Day? Now s your chance! A special day for the people of our Deanery has been arranged at Hilfield Friary on July 6 th. This will be led by Brother Samuel, SSF. Quiet Days comprise short addresses interspersed with periods of quiet when participants may walk quietly in the grounds, sit in the chapel or just be. You may if you wish join the Hilfield Community for midday Eucharist. Some people like to bring a bible but this is not essential. The day is about giving time to be with God, without the distractions of everyday life a few hours apart to ponder on the things that matter, or simply to be still and silent. Posters and booking forms should be in all of our churches, but can also be obtained from Sue Rawlinson: or sue.rawlinson388@btinternet.com. Fill in a form and return it to me with a suggested donation of 5 for the Friary (cheques payable to SSF), who will be providing the venue as well as tea and coffee. The day will be from 10am to 4pm and we are asked to take a packed lunch. Participants will be sent more detailed instructions nearer the time. Transport can be arranged if needed. Do come and join us for this very special day in a peaceful and beautiful setting. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Sue Rawlinson, Magnolia Cottage, Blandford Road, Shillingstone DT11 0SF A Cat Goes to Heaven A cat dies and goes to Heaven. God meets him at the gate and says: you have been a good cat all of these years. Anything you desire is yours, all you have to do is ask. The cat says, Well, I lived all my life with a poor family on a farm and had to sleep on hard wood floors. God says, Say no more. And instantly, a fluffy pillow appears. A few days later, six mice are killed in a tragic accident and they go to Heaven. God meets them at the gate with the same offer that He made the cat. The mice said, All our lives we ve had to run. Cats, dogs and even women with brooms have chased us. If we could only have a pair of roller skates,we wouldn t have to run anymore. God says, Say no more. And instantly, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful pair of tiny roller skates. About a week later, god decides to check and see how the cat is doing. The cat is sound asleep on his new pillow. God gently wakes him and asks, How are you doing? Are you happy here? The cat yawns and stretches and says, Oh,I ve never been happier in my life. And those Meals on Wheels you ve been sending over are the best! 24

Bran Muffins This 85 year old couple, having been married almost 60 years, had died in a car crash. They had been in good health the last ten years mainly due to her interest in health food, and exercise. When they reached the pearly gates, St. Peter took them to their mansion which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen and master bath suite and Jacuzzi. As they oohed and aahed the old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. It s free, Peter replied, this is Heaven. Next they went out to survey the championship golf course that the home backed up to. They would have golfing privileges everyday and each week the course changed to a new one representing the great golf courses on earth. The old man asked, what are the green fees?. Peter s reply, This is heaven, you play for free. Next they went to the club house and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisines of the world laid out. How much to eat? asked the old man. Don t you understand yet? This is heaven, it is free! Peter replied with some exasperation. Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol tables? the old man asked timidly. Peter lectured, That s the best part...you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven. With that the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down his hat and stamping on it, and shrieking wildly. Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking him what was wrong. The old man looked at his wife and said, This is all your fault. If it weren t for your bran muffins, I could have been here ten years ago! 30
