3 Leader Article March 2015 We are now into the second week of Lent. In our Christian calendar Lent is a period often associated with fasting and denial and a broadening of ones faith. It is a time when many people try to give something up, maybe chocolate or alcohol for the six weeks period. Is that what you are doing? Whilst giving up chocolate and fasting would help to shed a few of those much needed pounds, a better way for me is to do something additional to my daily routine as I journey towards Easter. There are always plenty of books dedicated to this season to choose from. I find that daily readings enable me to focus on the bigger picture and reflect on what is happening in my life; to allow more time for sacred space. This year I have chosen to read The journey with Jesus to Jerusalem and the Cross written by John Pritchard. It is based on Luke 9.51: When the days drew near for Him (Jesus) to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. Lent gives us the opportunity to share in that journey with Christ, individually or corporately. If you haven t already signed up for the Churches Together in Shaftesbury Lent Course, it isn t too late and I m sure that you would be made very welcome. Many people think that Lent includes Sundays but this isn t the case. Sundays are days of celebration when we come together to worship the Lord. Two special Sundays we have in March are Mothering Sunday and Palm Sunday. Both are about journeying. 3

4 The 4 th Sunday in Lent, Mothering Sunday, is always celebrated. Traditionally, people journeyed to worship in their Mother church, usually the largest church nearby or the cathedral. Domestic servants were allowed the day off to go to their Mother church and meet up with members of their family. Young children in service used to pick wild flowers on the way to give to their mothers. We still carry on with this tradition of giving posies to both women and men in our churches. This is so important because regardless of gender we all care for, or mother, each other. You don t have to have a child, or children to mother others! Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter, is when we celebrate Jesus triumphant journey into Jerusalem. We sing Hosanna and receive a blessed palm cross. The prophet Zechariah foretells Jesus entry in Chapter 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Low, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey. Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey, an animal symbolising peace; whereas if he had ridden on a horse it would have symbolised war. This triumphant journey appears in all four gospels to reminds us that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. From that day onwards our mood changes as we walk with Jesus in Holy Week, to his crucifixion, death and wonderful resurrection. So whatever you do for your Lent observance, the most important thing is that you open your heart to receive the love of Christ in your life as you journey with him to Jerusalem. May your preparations allow you to be Easter people not just on Resurrection Sunday but throughout the year. Love and God bless, Jan 4

8 St Peter s Shaftesbury Last month, we reported briefly on the passing of two longstanding and influential members of our congregation, but the news came too late for us to include these tributes: Charles Cleall Dear Charles Departed Charles Cleall and I were buddies in the back row of the choir stalls. He always greeted me with a Hallo dear boy and we helped each other out. I helped to find his music, told him what the choirmaster said when he couldn t hear and he helped me with my singing, keeping me on time and the right note. Although he was quick to tell me when I d strayed, it was always in such a cheerful and helpful way that it was a joy to be coached by someone as expert as he. As a retired professional musician, Charles was able to appreciate all parts of the music at once, so much so that he would sometime swap parts, almost in mid bar. So, while I was avidly following him in the bass line, he would suddenly, and much to my confusion, be going full force as a tenor or alto. Charles had a sharp mind and a great way with words and his Christmas newsletters, usually a full page of type at least, were a delightful mine of quips and quotations. Some of them are still in my mind along many other happy memories of the times we had singing together in the back row of the stalls. John Parker St Peter s choir Dr Fred Powell - Extract from Dr Geoffrey s Tapper s address at the Thanksgiving service in St Peters on January 23 rd I am grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to Dr Frederick Powell Fred to his friends today. This was his church, where he and his wife Janet worshipped regularly, throughout Fred s time as a family doctor in Shaftesbury and surrounding villages. 8

9 He was born in Portsmouth, and received his medical education in St Bartholemew s hospital, London. He emerged with strong degrees and a diploma in obstetrics. He was an assistant in a Salisbury GP team for 2 years. He then joined the Shaftesbury General Practice, where he was a partner from 1953 to 1983 when he retired, moving to Compton Chamberlayne, while taking on further responsibilities in administering the Salisbury Hospice next to Odstock Hospital. He returned to Shaftesbury, where he and Janet lived out their last years in Bimport in the town they loved, and which loved them. After their return to Shaftesbury, Janet and Fred lived very quiet lives. Janet died 2 years ago, and Fred needed much care and attention from the children, with 24/7 supervision from a succession of caring women from a specialist caring organisation. Fred was a splendid man to work with. I have tried to think of a more dedicated, more hardworking, more qualified family doctor than Fred: and I can t! Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes If you are following the 10 month plan to fill a shoe box for a child in need, this month we will be concentrating on: Making music. The possibilities here are fairly wide. Bargains sell harmonicas, recorders, kazoos, pan pipes and toy xylophones, or you may come something else which will make musical sounds. When you have made your purchase, pop it in your shoe box, if you are intending to make up your own box, or bring it into St Peter s and place it in the small swing bin in the tower area. 19 St James Church Pilgrim Service - The series of monthly 'Pilgrim Services' continued on Sunday 8th February with the theme "The darling buds a promise of spring". As we approach the depths of winter, spring is not far behind, and we glimpse it in signs of hope like snowdrops, or our Pilgrim seeing the destination from afar, on the far horizon, even though there is a long way still to go. The language speaks to us at whatever stage we are in our own journey, and is interspersed with songs from the Celtic tradition. Afterwards we share friendship and refreshments. If you need a change from the more traditional service, you might find that this satisfies a need. Our next Pilgrim Service is on Sunday 8 th March at 6.00pm. This will be during Lent and the theme is 'Wilderness'. Do please join us everyone is most welcome! 22 LPA News Liturgical Colours Many people notice the colours of the banners we have hanging in St Peter s Church, Shaftesbury, and ask what is the reason for the changes that happen through the year. A great many churches dress their altars, that is they cover or drape them, in different colours according to the season. In St Peter s there is a fine C17th altar table that it would be a shame to cover, but the colour changes are quite significant; the minister, for instance, wears the appropriately coloured stole and chasuble (i.e. scarf and robe) for the season too. It all makes for a pleasing whole as well as indicating that we are focusing on a different aspect of our faith. So White (or gold, silver or gold colour) represents purity. It is used for Festivals i.e. Christmas, Easter and some Saint s days, i.e. party days! Red represents the fire of the Holy Spirit so it is used for Pentecost. It is also used in the Kingdom Season it being a royal colour, and to celebrate the feast of a Saint that was being martyred, it being also the colour of blood. Purple is used in some churches during Advent and Lent. It was a colour of mourning. (People would wear purple or mauve after they had put off their blacks ). The idea was that you mourned for your sin in the penitential season before a great feast like Christmas or Lent, thus increasing the excitement and glory of the celebration, but it also is a lovely rich, royal colour. Unbleached linen with red and black is known as Lenten Array and is used in many churches including St Peter s, in Lent. They represent sack cloth and ashes, traditionally worn by penitents in both Judaism and early Christianity. Green... is the colour of hope. The church uses it in the short pause between Epiphany and Lent and again after Trinity Sunday before the Kingdom Season which finishes the Christian year. Some churches, for instance Sherborne Abbey, also use light blue or rose pink for festivals of the Virgin Mary. 22
