2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at February 11, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Facts and Issues: Islam A Catholic Perspective What is Islam? Islam is the second largest religion in the world. There are more than 1.3 billion Muslims on the planet. By comparison, there are about 2.1 billion Christians, of which 1.1 billion are Roman Catholic. The word Islam means grateful surrender or submission to God. It is considered one of the three great monotheistic religions in the world. The other two great monotheistic religions are Judaism and Christianity. Islam was begun by Mohammed about seven centuries after the time of Christ. He was a merchant from Arabia. He believed that he received a personal revelation from God to form this belief. He received this revelation when he was in the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Muslims state that this revelation, recorded in the Koran is from God or Allah. The Muslims also believe that Mohammed was the last in a series sent by God, starting with Adam and continuing through Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The Tenets of Islam The basis of Islamic belief is that the Koran, or Qu ran, is the literal word of God revealed to Mohammed through the angel Gabriel. The Qu ran was first written in Arabic. Translations of the Qu ran into other languages are to be used only for personal purposes. This transcript is not to be used for official religious business. Muslims believe in final judgement, bodily resurrection, heaven and hell. They also follow divinely revealed morals norms and dietary regulations. They must avoid alcoholic beverages and pork. On Fridays, noon prayers are said in a mosque and an imam, Muslim preacher, gives a sermon. Muslims do not have an ordained ministry. Five essentials duties every Muslim must perform, called the Five Pillars: 1. The daily recitation of the profession of the Muslim faith. 2. Rituals worship five times a day, facing in the direction of the holy city of Mecca. 3. Almsgiving. 4. Fasting from dawn to dusk during the holy month of Ramadan, the time when the revelation of the Qur an to Mohammed is said to have begun. 5. Make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca. Adapted by Our Sunday Visitor Notitas del Diácono Jesús se apiadó.
3 February 11, 2018 w this bulletin on-line at Page T M S. J A P J,,,. GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great secret revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus humbled himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The leper will dwell apart, making an abode outside the camp (Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46). Psalm I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation (Psalm 32). Second Reading Do everything for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31 11:1). Gospel The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean (Mark 1:40-45). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Jas 1:1-11; Ps 119:67-68, 71-72, 75-76; Mk 8:11-13 Tuesday: Jas 1:12-18; Ps 94:12-13a, 14-15, 18-19; Mk 8:14-21 Wednesday: Jl 2:12-18; Ps 51:3-6ab, 12-14, 17; 2 Cor 5:20 6:2; Mt 6:1-6, Thursday: Dt 30:15-20; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 9:22-25 Friday: Is 58:1-9a; Ps 51:3-6ab, 18-19; Mt 9:14-15 Saturday: Is 58:9b-14; Ps 86:1-6; Lk 5:27-32 Sunday: Gn 9:8-15; Ps 25:4-9; 1 Pt 3:18-22; Mk 1:12-15 Pray the word of God during the week. It will refresh your Spirit. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time; World Marriage Day; World Day of the Sick Monday: Lincoln s Birthday Tuesday: Mardi Gras; Shrove Tuesday Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day; NOTE: THERE IS NO DISPENSATION ON ASH WEDNESDAY FROM FASTING OR ABSTINENCE Friday: ABSTINENCE EVERY FRIDAY DURING LENT Saturday: The Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today s Gospel centers on the plight of a leper and Jesus response of healing. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually in accessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventually died of leprosy, has been canonized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there s nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regulated and visitors must take an official tour, often involving a descent down the cliffs by Molakai mule. There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Damien s beloved island mission. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Marciano Martín (D) Stewardship Report for Jan 14, 2018 Attendance: 950 Envelopes Used 311 Envelopes : $ Offertory Cash $ Second Collection: $ Total: $ STEWARDSHIP In our second reading today, St. Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul exhorts his readers to do everything for the glory of God; and to be imitators of himself, as he is an imitator of Christ. He then tells them that he tries to please everyone in every way, not seeking his own benefit but that of others that they may be saved. As an imitator of Christ, Paul gave every minute of every day giving back to God his entire being. How much of ourselves do we give back to God? The best and most profound way to know what God wants back form us is found through daily prayer. This is the way we know how and where to serve our brothers and sisters as God expects us to do. This is way we learn how we, as individuals, are called to become imitators of Christ. Let us spend time with God each day and be open to His call to serve. We at St. Joan of Arc have always been generous in serving our parish and the local community. We are truly a stewardship parish that constantly finds ways to give back a portion of the many gifts we have been given throughout our lives. Many of us are committed to being Eucharistic ministers, ushers, lectors, greeters, singers and musicians, altars servers, and volunteers in the Office. Furthermore we serve many through the Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul. Let those of us who need to share more of our talents consider joining one or more of these organizations. In addition to sharing our talents, let us also consider sharing our financial resources with our Parish. We recently began our Annual Pastoral Appeal. Let us be generous in pledging as we have in past, and go for exceeding our goal for the sixth year in a row. For where your treasure is, there also lies your heart. Matthew 6: 21 It is in giving that we receive. St. Francis (Deacon Lee is ill, please keep him in your prayers.)

Ashes will be distributed during the Masses at 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence: The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self-denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God s continued call to conversion and holiness. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together thy should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of Abstinence. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. LENTEN MISSION on Feb will be presented by Fr. John Lipscomb Father Lipscomb was born in Virginia and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, attending Duval County Public Schools. Following his primary education Fr. Lipscomb attended the University of North Carolina, Asheville, receiving a BA in philosophy. Following college, he received his Masters in Divinity from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee and was subsequently ordained into Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church. Following an extensive parochial and diocesan ministry of some 22 years in Florida, South Carolina and Louisiana and as a chaplain in the Florida and South Carolina National Guard, Fr. Lipscomb returned, in 1996, to take up his ministry as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida. In 2007 Fr. Lipscomb and his wife were receive and confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church by the Most Reverend Robert N. Lynch. In 2009 Fr. Lipscomb was granted permission by the Holy See to receive ordination in the Catholic Church for the Diocese of St. Petersburg under the Pastoral Provision of St. John Paull II. He was ordained temporary deacon by Bishop Lynch and priest by Archbishop Favalora that year. Fr. Lipscomb is currently assigned to Bethany Center where he serves as chaplain and spiritual director, and to St Timothy s parish in Lutz, as one of the parochial vicars. Fr. Lipscomb and his wife, Marcie, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They have two children, six grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Stations of the Cross will be celebrated every Friday during Lent at 7:00 beginning pm February 16th.
