St. Peter s Union Church of Mantzville... where worship and service don t stop with the final hymn. The Reverend Kenneth L. Buckwalter, Interim Pastor Kristine K, Betz, Director of Music September 24, 2017 Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Contemporary Liturgy 9:00am Welcome to Worship this Day! If you are paid the same amount of money as your neighbor for less hours at the same job are you lucky? Is your neighbor unlucky? Were you just a better worker? Or... is something completely different going on, as in the Gospel parable for today. Mercy is not God being nice; mercy is God being God. The goodness of today s Gospel is in every aspect of the story because all people are blessed to part of a story in which they have a place, a purpose and the power to be all that God made them to be. Money is merely Jesus way of getting us to pay attention to the whole story and contemplate it. Some things to know as we begin... We begin with words of welcome because you are welcome here! Who is saying what and when? You are the congregation (C). C Congregation A Assisting Minister P Presiding Minister L Lector Please do not use cell phones during this service. M Minister from the Congregation Please note that standing is an invitation, not a requirement!

Gathering WORDS of WELCOME We Gather Again and Seek God s Presence ANNOUNCEMENTS, JOYS AND CONCERNS (Prior to worship, at 8:50 a.m.) CALL FOR PRAYER REQUESTS LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES Followed by Ringing of the Bell (All who are able, please stand to speak in unison the Mission Statement.) OPENING STATEMENT OF MISSION St. Peter s Church is committed to providing a family atmosphere for people of all ages. We are a people who sincerely care about each other and the community. We strive to be one people, bonded by Christ s love. We look to the future for the continued vitality that we share today. Through worship, preaching, fellowship, and servanthood, may we reach out to all people as witness to the Living God. GATHERING MUSIC Warming up our hearts and our voices in praise of God Gathering songs are projected on the chancel screen. SONG of INVITATION Come, Now Is the Time SONG of PETITION Open the Eyes of my Heart, Lord

SONG of CONFESSION Change my Heart, O God ANNOUNCEMENT of FORGIVENESS Brief pause for reflection follows the Song of Confession. The presiding minister pronounces God s forgiveness on the assembly. CALL to WORSHIP Be present today, O God, in a special way! P Already overburdened with the demands of work and leisure, family and friends, we come to this place in search of rest. C May we find here the strength to work for justice. P Forgiveness is elusive and anger is justified, too often we settle for the sweet fleeting fruit of revenge. C May we find here the patience to embody mercy. P Deluded by the world in which we live, receiving power and prestige and money as just reward, missing the Spirit's call to a life grounded in humble service. C May we find here the wisdom to walk in the Spirit. P Come! Come and worship, you who woke early and you who slept late; you who come often, and you who don t. Whether we are first or last or somewhere in between, there is room for all of us in God s kingdom, and more than enough grace to go around. C Let s worship God together! GATHERING SONG We rejoice in the boundless mercy. Kyrie Eleison Dakota Road Gathering song is projected on the chancel screen.

GREETING and PRAYER of the DAY We seek wisdom for our hearts, a vision for our soul, and faith for our world. P The forgiving love of Jesus, the steadfast mercy of God, and the uniting power of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Call all the laborers, O God! Call your laborers who woke early, Call your laborers who came late, Call your laborers who feel wronged, Call your laborers who feel overlooked, Call your laborers who can't feed their children with this wage, Call your laborers who know they are working in your fields, Call your laborers who use their wage to increase your love, Call all your laborers, O God, tell us to roll up our sleeves. For we know that we have work to do. Let us find you in the work we share here and now, in Christ's presence we pray. C Amen SHARING THE PEACE OF THE LORD P The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. C And also with you. (Please be seated after you say hello to your neighbors.)

If such a thought frightens us, then we do not know God at least not the one Jesus taught us to love and trust. God loves us with a jealous love and acts accordingly. RESPONDING to the GOSPEL A CONTEMPORARY READING From Family Share Tiffany Fletcher Read by Norene Rosso A TIME WITH THE CHILDREN Megan Frantz and the children of the congregation MEDITATION The Reverend Kenneth L. 6 Rite of Consecration CONFESSION of FAITH P We are God s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, let us confess our faith. C We are not alone, we live in God s world. P We believe in God: C who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. P We are called to be the Church: C to celebrate God s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. P In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. C We are not alone. Thanks be to God. LITURGY of CONSECRATION Blessing the Confirmation Class of The Liturgy is printed on your worship folder insert. Class members, their families and sponsors are invited to the chancel.

SONG of the DAY Uplifted by God s grace we offer grace to others. The Servant Song THE OFFERING OF OUR GIFTS I Have the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy! (The congregation is invited to joyfully process forward, embodying a spirit of gladness, as they bring their offerings forward to the plate located at the center of the chancel rail. Please depart by the side aisles.) PRAYERS of INTERCESSION We pray for God s world and God s people. LORD S PRAYER We pray as Christ taught us. P C Gathered by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. COMMISSIONING and BLESSING We hear the call to serve and are blessed with power to do so. P C P C We will go into the world as God's people, telling of God's steadfast love for all. We will go to serve the world as followers of Jesus, showing with our lives that all are part of the kingdom.

P C We will go to share the Spirit, to bring peace where there is war, to share love where there is hate. P The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord s face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. SENDING HYMN Filled with the fire of the Spirit we shout to the Lord in song!
