St. Peter s Union Church of Mantzville... where worship and service don t stop with the final hymn. The Reverend Kenneth L. Buckwalter, Interim Pastor Kristine K, Betz, Director of Music May 28, 2017 Seventh Sunday of Easter Memorial Day Weekend 9:00am Welcome to Worship this Day! On this special Sunday between Ascension (May 25 th ) and Pentecost (June 4 th ) we gather with the disciples in the upper room, waiting for the Spirit to transform the church around the world. In today s gospel Jesus prays for his followers and for their mission in his name. Amid religious, social and economic divisions, we seek the unity that Jesus had with his Father. Made one in baptism with Christians throughout the world, we go forth to live our faith in such a way that all humanity may also be united as one around a peace that only God can give. As we remember in our country this weekend those who offered their lives that we might live in peace and justice, let us remember also the one whose life first brought us true peace and justice: Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Some things to know as we begin... We begin with words of welcome because you are welcome here! Who is saying what and when? You are the congregation (C). C Congregation A Assisting Minister P Presiding Minister L Lector Please do not use cell phones during this service. M Minister from the Congregation Please note that standing is an invitation, not a requirement!
Gathering Worship begins with the prelude. Please prepare your hearts with silence. WORDS of WELCOME PRELUDE This Is My Country --JRaye and Jacobs The assembly stands at the direction of the presiding minister. CONFESSION and FORGIVENESS We confess trusting that God forgives and heals. P Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who brings us safely through the sea, who gives us water from the rock, who leads us into the land of milk and honey. C Amen. P Let us come home to God, confessing our sin. Brief silence. Merciful Father, C we have sinned against heaven and before you. We do not fully live as your sons and daughters. We use your gifts to our own ends. Forgive us and restore us, that we may resist all that draws us away from you, and be at peace with one another. Amen. P We are reconciled to God through Christ; for his sake, God does not count our trespasses against us. Once dead in sin, we are now alive to God. Once lost, we now are found. God clothes you in the finest robe of all: the righteousness of + Jesus Christ. C Our sins are forgiven; we are a new creation. Amen.
GATHERING HYMN We marvel together at the caring love of the Lord. Eternal Father, Strong to Save Celebration Hymnal # 808 APOSTOLIC GREETING and KYRIE God greets us; we humble ourselves in prayer. P The grace of our Risen Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. P In peace, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P Help, save, comfort and defend us, gracious Lord: C Amen.
HYMN of PRAISE Before You, Lord, We Bow We rejoice before God over the gift of life and land. CCLI #
PRAYER OF THE DAY We seek God s help to live in the power of the resurrection. P Let us pray. Lead us in Truth, Lord Jesus Christ, pilgrims on our Way, through the sorrows and pains of our everyday, unto the eternal Life you have prepared for us; for wherever you are there is goodness and your love heals all wounds. In your holy and blessed name do we pray. C Amen The assembly may be seated. Word FIRST READING: Acts 1:6-14 Today s reading is part of the introduction to the narrative of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The text of this reading is printed on the back cover of this worship folder. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. THE PSALM: Psalm 68:1-10, Sing to the Lord, who rides upon the clouds. (Ps. 68:4)
SECOND READING: I Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11 Our faith in Christ does not make us immune from the scorn of others. Nevertheless, we are to resist the designs of evil when we experience disparagement from others, because we trust God s grace will strengthen and guide us. L A reading from First Peter. The text of this reading is printed on the back cover of this worship folder. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. WELCOMING the GOSPEL We welcome the same good news our forbearers told. God of Our Fathers Celebration Hymnal #809 CONFESSION of FAITH P We are God s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, let us confess our faith. C I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only begotten Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

P Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
