St. Peter s Union Church of Mantzville... where worship and service don t stop with the final hymn. The Reverend Kenneth L. Buckwalter, Interim Pastor Kristine K, Betz, Director of Music October 1, 2017 Worldwide Communion Sunday Holy Communion 9:00am Welcome to Worship this Day! As we gather today around the table of the word, we become more than a collection of individuals. We have been united to each other in the waters of baptism and welcomed by Christ to his holy supper. While some may be strangers to us, we are invited to recognize the deep communion we share in Christ Jesus. The liturgy does not protect us from others; it teaches us to be a people of hospitality, generous in faith, hope, and love. Some things to know as we begin... We begin with words of welcome because you are welcome here! Who is saying what and when? You are the congregation (C). C Congregation A Assisting Minister P Presiding Minister L Lector Please do not use cell phones during this service. M Minister from the Congregation Please note that standing is an invitation, not a requirement!
Gathering WORDS of WELCOME PRELUDE Communion -- The assembly stands at the direction of the presiding minister. --E. Batiste CALL to WORSHIP Be present today, O God, in a special way! P Bread of heaven, feed us. C Word of life, lead us. P Compassion of Christ, deliver us. C Lord have mercy. P Christ have mercy. C Lord have mercy. CONFESSION and FORGIVENESS We confess trusting that God forgives and renews. All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism as the presiding minister begins: P Trusting in the word of life given in baptism, we are gathered in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen P Before the whole company of heaven, in the presence of God and of one another, let us confess our sin. Silence for reflection and self-examination.
P God of all mercy, C we confess that we have sinned against you, resisting your will in our lives. We have not honored you in ourselves, in each other, and in the world you have made. Reach out your saving arm and rescue us from our sin. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will for your people and all creation. Amen P Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen. GATHERING HYMN We praise Jesus, and praise him, and praise him! When Morning Gilds the Skies (sts. 1-3) Celebration Hymnal #215 GREETING, PRAYER and PRAISE God greets us; we humble ourselves in petition and praise. P Holy people of God, called through the gospel of Christ, enlightened by the Spirit: grace, mercy, and peace be with you all. C And also with you. P In peace let us pray to the Lord. Be this th eternal song through all the ages long: May Jesus Christ be praised! Amen. P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. God of love, you know our frailties and failings. Through Word and sacrament, prayer and fellowship, give us your grace to overcome them; keep us from those things that harm us; unite us as one Body, and guide your holy Church in the way of salvation; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen The assembly may be seated.
Word FIRST READING: Ezekiel 18:1-4, The prophet Ezekiel challenges an old proverb that would see the exile as punishment for the sins of the exiles' ancestors. Rather, he says, God insists that individuals are responsible for their own sin and their own repentance. L A reading from Ezekiel. L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. After the reading, the following is said. THE PSALM: Psalm 25:1-8 Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love. (Ps. 25:5) SECOND READING: Philippians 2:1-13 Paul quotes from an early Christian hymn to describe the attitude of humble selfsacrifice displayed in Christ Jesus. Although Christians may disagree on many things, he urges them to be of one mind with regard to emulating Christ's self-giving love. L A reading from Philippians. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. After the reading the following is said. Please stand after the reading to welcome the Gospel. WELCOMING the GOSPEL We welcome the powerful word that opens our hearts to the mercy of God.
Break Thou the Bread of Life (sts. 1 & 2) CCLI #
GOSPEL: Matthew 21:23-32 Shortly after arriving in Jerusalem, Jesus drives the moneychangers out of the temple, heals the sick, and begins teaching there. These activities are challenged by the religious leaders who are supposed to be in charge of the temple. P The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the 21 st chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. P The Gospel of our Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. After the reading the following is said. Please remain standing for the Gospel Response. RESPONDING to the GOSPEL We rejoice in the living words that never stops speaking God s grace to us. Break Thou the Bread of Life (sts. 3 & 4) Printed on the preceding page. GOOD NEWS! Anthem Christians Come, Gather at the Table --Senior Choir Children s Time and Prayer Sermon After the sermon the assembly stands for the Confession of Faith.
CONFESSION of FAITH P We are God s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, let us confess our faith. C I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only begotten Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. SIGNS OF PEACE The peace that Christ gives to us we share with others. P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. After sharing signs of peace with one another the assembly may be seated. OFFERING We offer our time, talents and treasures to God. OFFERTORY Interlude --F. Chopin Please stand for the communion hymn. PREPARATORY HYMN We hear the promise again: on Jesus you can depend! How Firm a Foundation Celebration Hymnal #408
Meal OFFERTORY PRAYER A Living and true God, C we give to you the things that are yours--our skills, our time, our possessions, our selves. Bless us and these your gifts. Move us to works of faith and labors of love for the good of all your people and the wholeness of your creation; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen PRAYERS of INTERCESSION We pray for God s world and God s people. P Living in the gift of grace, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who long to experience God's compassionate love. Brief silence. P Open our hearts and minds to the truth of your will, O God. Enlarge our capacity to embrace with respect all whom you love and accept. God of steadfast love, C hear our prayer. P Bless with wisdom and energy all who labor on behalf of the church, and grant that all who exercise authority in your church may do so with a compassion that unites us in true love. God of steadfast love, C hear our prayer. P Grant peace throughout the world, especially on the Korean peninsula and the Middle East; and, enliven us to live justly and responsibly, bringing grace, generosity, and hope to all people. God of steadfast love, C hear our prayer.
P Make sacred the times and places of our lives. May we be stewards of your grace in our communities, homes, workplaces, schools, governments, and places of worship. God of steadfast love, C hear our prayer. P Bless with your healing power all who long for wholeness in any way, for themselves or for those whom they love (especially). Give them peace and patience in their longing and in their waiting. God of steadfast love, C hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. P We remember with joy and thanksgiving those who both gather with us at your table of grace and have gone before us into your eternal rest (brief pause to remember our beloved dead). Help us to follow in their path of faithfulness. God of steadfast love, C hear our prayer. P Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Risen Savior. C Amen. THANKSGIVING at the TABLE Bread, cup, and the promise of presence Jesus is with us. P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the
resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: C (Spoken) Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of your glory; Glory be to you, O Lord Most High. Amen. P Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on all your faithful people. Bless this bread and this fruit of the vine, that they might refresh us at this table and renew us as Christ s body in the world. C Amen. LORD S PRAYER We pray as Christ taught us. P C Gathered by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those
who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. BREAKING the BREAD We begin the sharing as Jesus did. P The table of life is spread before you. Feast on the goodness and mercy of God. C Thanks be to God. The assembly may be seated. DISTRIBUTION Jesus shares the bread of life and cup of blessing with us. Sharing the Bread and Cup All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. We believe and teach that in the Holy Communion the crucified and risen Christ is present, giving his true body and blood as food and drink. This real presence is a mystery. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER We give thanks for this gift of life. The assembly stands at the direction of the presiding minister. P Let us pray. C Almighty God, we thank you for your great mercy given to us in this sacrament, whereby we are made partakers of Christ and all his benefits. So enrich us by your Holy Spirit that the life of Jesus may be seen in our lives, and all our days may be spent in your love and service; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Sending COMMISSIONING and BLESSING We hear the call to serve and are blessed with power to do so. P C P C P C Jesus blessed and broke the food of sharing, and there was enough for all. Give what you can. We will not fear famine or thirst; we will not be bowed down by any lack. Christ gave life itself on our behalf. That love sustains us today. Share what you receive. Distress or peril or sword will not destroy us. Nothing in all creation can keep us from God s love. God forward in confidence and trust; God s Spirit goes with you to teach and lead. God s steadfast love renews us each morning. God s presence is sure in all times and places. Amen. P The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord s face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. SENDING HYMN We share the joy of God s immortal embrace. We re Marching to Zion Celebration Hymnal #416
