2 From Jan L-0-V-E Anyone who has been in a long-term relationship knows that loving another person is as much about daily reconciling as it is about feeling love. That is why Jesus says, No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You would think that sacri icing yourself for someone you don t know, or like, would be the greatest kind of love. Yet the challenge of Jesus command is that we must irst become friends. That includes even those who annoy us, or don t look like us, or don t vote or pray like us. Jesus modeled that kind of love when he chose to make himself servant to those who would serve him. Though sinless, Jesus made himself companion to those steeped in sin. This is how much God loves us: that God would bend down to become one with us. If we are to love one another as Jesus loved us, we must irst become friends; even with those we might consider enemies because of their beliefs, lifestyle, or race. From that relationship of friendship, we can show the greatest kind of love. So many people hunger for love. All of us desire to be intimately connected with others, God, and our world. Many things can work against this and cause us to feel alienated and even profoundly sad. Pope Francis tells us that our "in inite sadness can only be cured by an in inite love." We have been touched by God's love. We are called to bring that love to others so that their sadness and wounds can be healed. We must do this even for those we do not particularly like or who have hurt us. 3 6th Sunday of Easter GOSPEL MEDITATION "I have called you friends." Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or "commandments." In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship--new or old--becomes characterized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the person, even sacri ice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I command you." Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word "command" and immediately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties "commandment" to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know "what [the] Master is doing." Jesus has invited his followers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. He has patience with their laws. He isn't scandalized by their failures. He celebrates their successes. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. He does so personally, not from a distant mountain shrouded in clouds. This "new commandment" to "love one another" is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread. 5 Community MAYFAIR 2018 Mayfair is the most important fundraising celebration for our Catholic School Community. This year, we are reinvigorating the event and are splitting the gala and the carnival on two separate weekends. This will give us the opportunity to take the carnival home and celebrate our new school. Spending a week at Saint Thomas Camp it s not hard to see why that s true. Saint Thomas Camp has it s humble beginnings in the 1920 s. The Sisters of Providence who ran an orphanage in town began taking the children for excursions in the Monarch Wilderness. On April 15, 1958 the Sisters purchased the Karlson Ranch. They called their new property Saint Thomas Camp. In 1986, the Diocese of Great Falls Billings purchased the camp with the purpose of using the facility as a way to help teenagers experience Christ through a series of annual summer camps. It is our goal that every teenager who sets foot on the property would feel the love of Christ, experience a great adventure in the outdoors and be challenged to become the saint God wants them to be.
