2 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD "And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was." In our day and age, the star of Christmas has become a kind of decorative symbol that adorns manger scenes and Christmas trees. It suggests something good and bright and holy, a visual indicator that the "Light of the world" has appeared. But today, on the feast of the Epiphany, we recall that originally, this star was not just a pretty symbolic ornament. This star was a sign from God that intervened in the operations of the physical universe. The Magi understood that this star was sent from God to indicate where his Son would be born. Of course it should not surprise us in this season of all seasons that God should choose to order the universe according to his purposes. Jesus has just been born of a virgin! God has just taken on human lesh. These events in themselves are extraordinary divine interventionsmiracles that defy the standard operation of things. Why shouldn't God choose to send a luminous star where he wants it, when he wants it? Why shouldn't he reveal his plan through the things that he created in the irst place? The beauty of today's feast is found, in part, in the fact that the Magi were able to recognize this sign from God. They waited for it, they saw it, and they rejoiced in it: "They were overjoyed at seeing the star." We too should be overjoyed in this season of God's special revelation to us. We may need the eyes to recognize it, but truly we have waited for a Savior, we have seen his appearance at Christmas, and now it is time to celebrate! God is at work in our physical world. He has come here, now to save us. This is cause for rejoicing! Are you or someone you know interested in joining the Catholic Church? We are offering an opportunity to gather to learn more about our Catholic faith. Question for Youth:Life can sometimes be rough: losing your home, moving, feeling fear or danger. How do you experience God being and staying with you in such times? Question for Adults:How this past week did you demonstrate God s love at home and at work? Many thanks to the liturgical ministers and musicians who served at the Christmas liturgies as well as parishioners who helped set up and take down the Christmas art and environment! The Epiphanythe manifestation of our God is surrounded by words of exuberant joy splendor, glory, shining radiance, riches, hearts throbbing and overlowing. It s almost as if there aren t words enough to proclaim the wonder of this glory. This feast is not about the leftover Christmas music. It is the culmination, the bright star, the Magi, the meeting, the gifts. In particular it is the Magi taking a different way home: They were changed by their meeting. They saw the star, the splendor, the shining radiance. May we have this same sight as the Magi, with hearts throbbing and overlowing, and be changed by the meeting with the Messiah as we enter

NURSE S CORNER There are many exercises that are easy on the bones as we get older. Some of the more popular exercises for those that struggle with Arthritis are Water Aerobics, Yoga and Tai Chi. Yoga and Tai Chi have been the most studied exercise for in the last 10 years. These two have shown to improve balance, increase lexibility and improve strength in a mild and gentle way. Studies have shown that people that struggle with Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson s Disease, Peripheral Neuropathy, Cancers have beneitted and improved their health in controlled studies. One last consideration for exercise is as simple as walking. There is a walking track in our local YMCA and Rim Rock Mall has had early morning mall walkers, walking for years. Even the high schools have tracks that can used to walk. And best of all, nature walks are great for the spirit. There are several walking paths along the Yellowstone River that are maintained by the City of Billings. 3

The Magi were men of great faith. Their worldly position and power could have made them scoff at the sight of this humble infant. Their treasury of wealth could have blinded them to the true value of this child king. But instead these men placed themselves at the feet of Jesus in a gesture of complete submission. Then, as a sign of their devotion, they "opened their treasures" and offered this baby costly and precious gifts. Only a deep and sincere faith could justify such a surprising scene. Real faith often runs contrary to worldly wisdom. Without the irm belief that Jesus was the Messiah, it would seem absurd to travel all those miles and part with all that gold, much less to bow down in the presence of a poor child. But the eyes of faith can see much more than the eyes of the world alone. The Magi understood that all the prestige and possessions of the earth are nothing in comparison to the kingdom of heaven. They wanted to use their worldly wealth to give glory to the King of Kings, rather than for their own glory. Taking the Three Kings as models, we can examine our own lives. Are we willing to "travel" for our faith, leaving our comfort zone for the sake of the Gospel? Are we willing to share our "wealth" to glorify God? Are we willing to submit our desires and plans to the authority of Christ? As we begin the journey of this New Year, Friday let us January resolve to 5, follow 2017 in the faithful footsteps of the Magi. Liturgical Ministers

6 January 8, Epiphany of Our Lord Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11 The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow all year long. In gratitude for all that we have been given, we are share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be the most generous with that one thing that means the most to us. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Thanks to all of you who have already updated and turned in your registration. 99% of those turned in had updates to their information. Sooooo if you haven t filled out your registration yet, please do and this is why we need you to update your registration.. In February 2017 the Diocese has asked every Parish in the diocese to begin using the same software. Our rollover is in February and other parishes in the Diocese will be rolled in though the following months. In order to have our software current we are asking all families in the parish to fill out a registration form so that we can make sure everything is current including addresses, phone numbers, s and children etc. Registration forms were included in the last two weeks bulletins, so if you threw it out or didn t get one, stop by the office and pick one up or you can download it from our stpatcocoathedral.org web site. Just look under about us then look under parish registration and you will find form. Please fill out as completely as you can. If you have filled one out in the last 6 months, you won t have to unless you have moved, changed s or phone numbers. This also would be a good time to fill out the time and talent sheets handed out in the last month. They are used to stay current on who would like to ministers, office help, funerals etc. if you never get called or assigned to help, maybe its because we don't know you want to. We will have a basket for them in the gathering area to put them in when you are finished filling them out or you can return them to the office if you like. Thank so much in advance for helping us with this huge endeavor. 7 from Jan New in the second edition of The Order of Celebrating Matrimony is a ritual for blessing couples on the anniversary of their marriage. The earlier ritual did not include any form of a renewal of commitment more commonly referred to as renewal of vows. The renewal of commitment is not so much a reiteration of promises (vows) as it is a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings and a prayer seeking God s grace to remain faithful to their marriage promise. Ziggy and Stella Ziegler will renew the commitment they made to one another 60 years ago at the 8:00 am Mass next Sunday, January 15. We pray that God will continue to bless them in the years ahead. The world ~~~~~~~~~ is full of good people if you can t find one, be one. HOSPITALITY Imagine that you are coming to church next Sunday. As you come through the door, you realize that someone is right behind you and you naturally hold the door open for that person. As they come in behind you, you suddenly realize that it is Jesus himself, looking just as you always imagined him. What do you do now? What do you say? You probably would do whatever you could to make Jesus feel welcome at St. Patrick. Of course, it's not very likely that he will show up next Sunday, looking like a firstcentury Jewish rabbi. Christ will arrive looking like your neighbor or your friend, or perhaps like a person you've never met before. He might look like a member of your family, or he might look like a homeless person. He might look like a high school youth or a young married couple with small children. Our faith tells us that Christ dwells in every member of his body, including the people who gather with us here every Sunday. That's the deepest reason for us to be hospitable to one another as we assemble for the Eucharist. Through the week, all of us who are members of the body of Christ are scattered throughout our community. When we come to Mass on Sunday, we need to reconnect with the other members of the body with smiles and hellos. How will you welcome Christ the next time we gather here? Before or after Mass will you introduce yourself to the Christ in someone you don t know?
