No one has an exclusive claim on Christ and his birth not only transcends time and space but earthly boundaries as well. Every human being is a child of God. Jews and Gentiles alike are all coheirs, partners and members of the same body. This insight or epiphany is what we celebrate today. It also expresses our hope that one day every nation on earth will recognize and adore Jesus Christ. 3 The Epiphany of the Lord GOSPEL MEDITATION "Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel." Embarking on a long and dificult journey, they trust that they will ind this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives. 4 From Jan WHAT GIFTS DO WE OFFER? As I write this article, I'm with my daughter Meghan's family in Boise. She and her husband Matt have three girls, Addie, Elysse and Ilana. When I asked six ear old Ilana what she knew about the Three Kings, her answer was, Well, they gave Jesus gold, Frankenstein and money. After the Magi encountered the Christ child, they went home by a different route because they were changed by their meeting with Christ. Will the offering of our gifts to Christ, our good deeds, our celebrations of the Word and Eucharist lead us to go home by a different way? Will we be changed by the meeting with the Messiah, Jesus the Christ? In the spirit of offering gifts, in this time of cultural anxiety, terrorist fear, political violence, and partisan anger what can we offer Jesus in this year of 2018? Consider the gold of a faith built on the foundation of hope; the incense of a prayer life lowing from the celebration of the Eucharist, and the myrrh of compassion for others, including the disenfranchised, the marginal and those we hold in contempt. Keep Active in the Winter With it being cold and our usual walking paths being icy, it is easy to become less active in winter. There are some good opportunities for walking indoors. These include the mall and both hospitals. The hospitals have long halls and stairwells for more of a challenging work out. Staying active is good for our physical and mental well being! A Christmas Note from : Baudry Metangmo, I would like to wish the entire St Patrick s Community a Blessed and Joyilled Christmas Season. It was dificult for me to be away from my country for Christmas, yet I found in St Pat s a new family! Now it is tough being away from that family for Christmas. But the Lord always provides! First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share! There is a great opportunity coming up with the New Year. Our Sunday Visitor is hosng a webinar series called Loaves + Fishes. It will be offered live monthly on the second Tuesday of every month and a recording of the webinar will be available the following day. You must preregister for this event. The theme of the webinar is on Stewardship, so it fits very well with our diocesan priories. One very important piece of informaon pertaining to the webinar is that it is free of charge to parishes and parishioners given that it is funded via the Catholic Communicaons Campaign. 5 Community If you or your family purchased an item for the Jesse Tree Gifts for Kids, please ill out one of the In Kind forms. THIS IS NOT FOR TAX PURPOSES. Early Head Start Program has a federal grant and they need to show community support through donations. If they don t show a certain amount of money in donations they could potentially have to repay their grants to the government. You don t have to be speciic when you list items. You can even just write Christmas presents and value it. Valuing the donation is the most important besides signing the sheet. The forms are located on the counter in front of the ofice. Marriage Saving the Weekend Phase During the weekend phase of Retrouvaille a series of presentations are given by a team of three couples and a priest. The team presents a technique of communication that enables you to take a good look at most areas of your relationship. After each presentation, you have time in the privacy of your room to discuss the previous presentation. 6 Volunteers Needed! To help with Children s Liturgy of the Word. Volunteer one Sunday a month at the 10:30 a.m. Mass to help our children break open the word of God in ways they can understand! This is an approximately 20 minute commitment one Sunday each month (when you are here, anyway!). Volunteers will receive training and the reward of relationships with our youngest parish members! SPY NEWS All the children ended this year of religious education and youth groups with a Christmas party. We had caroling in the church hall for the little ones, and middle school and high school youth groups had parties with plenty of spirited fun! Our kids are so connected to our parish, and as we enter 2018, our plan is to keep them that way! Thank you to all of you for insuring we have a thriving religious education and youth ministry program! Please don t forget, if you are the parent of a irst grader, they all need to be enrolled in religious education this year so they can receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Conirmation and First Communion next year when they are in second grade.
