1 VOLUME 71 - NUMBER 3 MARCH 2018 If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me will save it. Luke 9:23-24 How is your Lenten journey going? Following Jesus means looking forward with the intention of moving forward into God s design for you. Nothing is more futile than to endlessly dwell on some occasion in the past, that you did something wrong, or did not do something right. Lenten discipline is all about seeking God s guidance, despite all our mistakes, to succeed in life. Events in life can cause us to be like Lot s wife who was turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back toward her past life in Sodom (Genesis 19:26). Sometimes I am like Lot s wife. My life seems stuck because I keep looking back. I turn that old problem over and over in my mind, uselessly, without ever discovering whether I did right or not. The result my life stuck in neutral, because my faith is shaken, and I am not looking for God s guidance any more. I want to start going forward again! To will what God wills is the only science that gives us direction and peace. We all find it difficult to understand God s guidance, because we lack imagination. We are really prisoners of our own perspective. We are always wanting to arrange everything, order everything, reconstruct everything. If we read the Old Testament prophets, we see that sometimes, on the contrary, the will of God is that everything should be destroyed, that the cup of sin be drained dry, so as to make possible a new beginning. We find it hard to understand the detours along which God takes us, and it is often only afterwards that we see that we had to go that way. That is what our Lenten season is all about; to reflect and follow where Jesus leads. Paul offers some great counsel: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward to Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14 Remain faithful and you shall receive the crown of Life!
2 ST. LUKE S COURIER MARCH 2018 PAGE 2 Please join us each Wednesday during Lent for Soup Supper and a Project, where we are taking up our cross and following Jesus. See you in church, Pastor Garry PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ~ WHAT DOES GOD KNOW? When you pray, are you normally telling God what He should know and do? Are you requesting something that you want from Him? Are you giving God advise, telling Him what needs to be fixed, or who needs to be made well? When you pray, it might be a really good idea to consider who God is and what God already knows before you begin to talk with Him. He created you, knows everything about you, and loves you so much. God has perfect knowledge, wisdom and power. God is infinitely superior to us in all areas. What does God know? Everything that has happened, is happening, and ever will happen Whenever things happen; wherever they happen on earth or in a distant galaxy, in heaven or hell Everything about every person, being, thing, situation, circumstance and event Every cause and effect, attitude and action; every secret thought, all words and deeds Those who do evil and those who do right, things done and left undone, every excuse and every motive What people would have done in different circumstances or with different opportunities Each need and all desires of every living thing God s infinite wisdom and knowledge have depths we will never reach. God is not answerable to our ideas of what is wise or just. Therefore, our prayers often include Adoration, Confession and Thanksgiving. The following comes from my morning prayer guide:
3 ST. LUKE S COURIER MARCH 2018 PAGE 3 ADORATION ~ (Psalms 92, 103, , 118:24/28-29, 138, 139, 145, 148; 150) CONFESSION ~ I surrender all to You! Heavenly Father, I need You! I often forget this and try to go it alone because I want to be god. As a result, I sin against You even though I know that sin leads to death. For this I am sorry, and with Your help I turn away from my sin and turn to You. I thank You that You have forgiven my sins through Christ s death on the cross for me, and You raise me to new life through Christ s resurrection and ascension. I now invite You, Christ, to take Your place again on the throne of my life. I commit all my ways to You. Without You, I can do nothing worthwhile. Yet all things are possible with You. (1 John 1:8-10; Psalm 37:5; 2 Cor. 12:7-10 and Luke 1:37) THANKSGIVING ~ The LORD is my strength & my song (Ps. 118:14) Dear Father, I give thanks to You through Jesus Christ Your Dear Son, that You have protected me through the night from all danger and harm; and I ask You to preserve and keep me this day also from all sin and evil; that in all my thoughts, words, and deeds I may serve and please You. Into Your hands I commend my body and soul and all that is mine. May Your holy angel be with me so that the wicked one has no power over me. I thank You for Your protection, provision, discipline, awesome creation, steadfast love, goodness, mercy, grace, power, faithfulness, righteousness, justice, trustworthiness, wisdom, excellent greatness, holiness, majesty, glory and splendor! God bless you, Perry Saupe In love and reverent fear of You, LORD, and with all my heart I seek, praise, appreciate, thank, trust, respect and serve You! Help me LORD worship You today and always! (Ps. 119:2) LORD I delight in You AND You delight in Your people including me! WOW!! (Ps. 149:4) FROM THE CREW * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Crew is going to Hollywood! 5 ST. LUKE S COURIER MARCH 2018 PAGE 5 LET S BUILD A HOUSE FOR LENT! Hi everyone. Lent is not only a time for reflection and quietness, it is also a time for action! Every Sunday, we hear the Gospel lesson that ALWAYS speaks to something our Lord has done. Healing, speaking, and feeding others: Christ did many things. The Long Beach Coalition for Habitat for Humanity is always looking for ways to make builds happen. On Souper Bowl Sunday, you all contributed $333.00! An amount I am sure our Lord will multiply, but He does it by tugging at our heartstrings via the Holy Spirit. That being said, I am going to post the list of materials needed to build a home. It will be on the information counter in the entryway. If you feel so led, please put your name after the item you wish to pay for and place the money in the offering plate ~ designating on the envelope and/or check note section: Habitat Home. I promise to monitor what is given and will make sure the money goes to the Coalition. For our Lord, 40 days was an extraordinarily long time in the wilderness. He persevered, and I trust we will also come away from Lent this year with a new perspective of what it means to Serve the Lord. Peace and Blessings to you all! Pam Garcia For Habitat
