The Voyager Immaculate Lady Newsletter February, 2019 Grand Knight s Message Brothers All, How are you all doing with your New Year s resolution? You don t have to answer that. Thank you to all my Brothers for your support over the last month. Much is still to be done and we need your support to make it happen. In December our Council hosted an Admission Degree (in case you missed it) and our council had to fill in for parts of the Degree Team. During the fellowship afterwards, it was decided to once again have a Degree team here at Immaculate Lady. If you have any interest please let me, Dave Clement or Victor Lengrand know because we are short a couple of team members. Brothers, it is no longer necessary to memorize the speaking parts. The requirements have changed and memorization is only for competitions. We are not competing. On March 31 our Council will have a Fifth Sunday Mass dedicated to the Knights with reserved pews for us all to sit and pray together with the Family and Brothers. The Mass time has yet to be determined. The March for Life pizza supper the Council provided for the marchers on January 18 was very well received and appreciated by all in attendance. Gift Card Bingo on January 19 was also a success even with the terrible weather. All the players I talked to wanted to know when in the spring we were going to have it again. The Parish has asked the Knights to HELP with two events which I am in the process of working out the details. What has occurred that we Knights are being recognized here at the Parish? Is it that we are in the bulletin every week, have socials every month with the Parish invited or wearing our Council shirts to events or our name badges to Mass? Brothers, it all adds up. We now have men calling me and asking questions about the Knights and wanting to join. Vivat Jesus! Ron Spohn Grand Knight, Immaculate Lady Council #5208 Talk or text: SuznRon@aol.com Home:

Council #5208 Name Badges/Council #5208 Shirts Council #5208 Name Badges A versatile alternate to Council shirts is the Council name badge. Everyone received a badge gratis upon becoming a Knight. Name badges are still available and gratis-- for a limited time. They also fit nicely in most shirt pockets. If you need to replace yours, or perhaps want to purchase an extra one for each of your jackets, please contact PGK Sam Collins ( SamuelCollins12341@comcast.net; or phone or text ). If you need a replacement name badge, this is what it looks like, in case you don t remember. Wearing your name badge is important so that the Parish will know our Council is an active organization. If you would like to buy a new Council shirt, please contact Ron Spohn (call or text ; suznron@aol.com). 4 2018 Christmas Assistance Program By Dave Coyne The Knights of Columbus would like to thank those parishioners and brother knights who made contributions to the annual Christmas Assistance Program. Through your support financial support, we were able to assist six families this year including 17 children. We also received many non-monetary food donations consisting of dry foods, hams, turkeys, lasagna and canned goods. This allowed us to supplement fruit baskets, dinner rolls and cookies to provide sufficient food for a filling and nutritious Christmas meal. Thanks go out to Ann Wheeler who referred families to us and Easy Movers who donated boxes for the delivery of the food. Our gratitude goes out to the Smith family (parents Al and Tracy and their children) for their efforts to gather and organize the food items for the families and to Jim Ryan, Jim s son, Joe and daughter-in law, Lauren and their children, along with Brother Knight, Steve Stephen for their efforts to deliver the food and gifts to the families. This year we were also able to avail ourselves to the Toys for Tots program allowing many more of our toys request for the children to be met. There are many other parishioners that work behind the scene to promote and ensure the on-going success of this program which speaks to the caring compassionate nature of our Sacred Heart parish community. Thank you again for your support to allow this program to be the face of Christ for those families in our community who are less fortunate. Ravens Playoff Game at M & T January 8 By Ron Spohn The Ravens Won their last game of the season so our Council Ravens Members were asked to be at the playoff game for the North Division Championship, and we all showed up. Lady Suzanne Spohn, Bill Keil, Brian Bogdanski, Tom Harwell, and Ron Spohn. It was a game that we did not want to miss and we all have been having so much fun being at the games with our Council team and the Sheen Council that it was a no brainer. Sorry that you missed the excitement and comradery that we all got to share. All of us are closer now. The Council would like to thank the Team for participating the whole season and helping the Council. I would like to recognize the Team that did the work. First Lady Suzanne Spohn Bill Keil 4

Brian Bogdanski Tom Harwell GK Ron Spohn Pizza Dinner for March for Life By Ron Spohn Friday, January 18, Sacred Heart Parish had a bus of 55 Parishioners go to Washington DC for the March for Life rally. No one group from the parish dominated the bus s seats. Everyone on that bus showed their commitment to Right to Life. Starting early in the morning for the ride to Washington, then marching all day then back on to the bus for the ride home. Immaculate Lady Council had supper ready for all the Marchers who wanted to come. At 6 pm, the supper opened with a Prayer, then the pizza, salad, drinks and dessert were served. The Knights helping to prepare the meal were Dave Clement, Victor Lengrand and Ron Spohn. Parishioners who also helped out were Teresa Eyler, Myrna Rosado, Jeff & Heart Ment and First Lady Suzanne Spohn. Without their help the 37 marchers may not have had such a welcome meal and fellowship. The Immaculate Lady Council wishes to thank all those that fill in the ranks to make this meal a success. 5

Gift Card Bingo January 19 By Ron Spohn Yes, I, Ron Spohn, was there and I can testify to this. Saturday, January 19, Immaculate Lady KofC held their first Gift Card Bingo. The day of the event, wouldn t you know it, a nor easter approaching the Baltimore area was predicted to bring freezing rain and ice to Reisterstown. Even before the storm, some skeptics predicted failure - who wants to win gift cards! When the doors opened the line formed and Tom Harwell collected the gift cards in a bucket which started to fill up fast. The food line formed and sales were swift. Taking orders was First Lady Suzanne Spohn. We were off to a good start. The volunteers started to look like we have been doing this for years with their efficiency. The Chiefs in the kitchen Dave Clement, Henry Crusse & Victor Lengrand kept the food coming as short order chiefs. What s that?? Tell the order taker we are sold out of top selling items. After everyone had their fill of good food it was BINGO time and the crowd could not wait any longer. The Council brought out of retirement the Council s veteran Presidential model bingo machine along with Ken O Dea the caller. Picking up the winners cards to verify a Bingo! was Bill Nellies, and verifying the numbers had actually been called was Chris Kilgalen. Making announcements and being a pest to the caller was Ron Spohn. Fifteen games of regular bingo, five special games and a Split the Pot raffle, who could ask for more? Oh yeah, the winners of the Door Prizes, of course. Sorry if you and your family did not make this Great Social, but the Parishioners of SHG had the best time and have been asking ever since when are we doing it again? Sorry Doom Sayers, but it was a success. Ken O Dea and the Presidential Bingo Machine, both out of retirement. KofC Volunteers L to R: Tom Harwell, Chris Kilgalen & Bill Nellies. First Lady Suzanne taking orders. L to R: Dave Clement, Henry Crusse and Victor Lengrand as short order chefs. 6

The Players. Casserole Night January 22, 2019 Baby it s COLD OUTSIDE, but the Knights are shiver-free as we gather together to make 64 Casseroles for Our Daily Bread. Did the members have cabin fever? Or is there just too much fun to be had working together or the fellowship after the work? Well, Brothers, we had a Brother Knight that we have not seen in a while come out and help and we welcomed him to the Casserole Team, Paul Karpers. Does our advertising in the bulletin that we are doing Casseroles work?! Just ask Brad and William Sharpless who came out to help us. There s so much fun to be had, members shouldn t miss out. Thank you all for your Charitable Time to ODB Casserole Night. L to R: Brother Paul Karpers, Bill Keil & Victor Lengrand L to R: Bill & Mathew Nellies, Brad Sharpless, Brian Bogdanski, Joe Maher, Charles Mezu. 8 Left to Right: Mathew Nellies, Tom Harwell, Victor Lengrand. Fifth Sunday Mass for the Knights Beginning in this, the New Year 2019, Immaculate Lady Council Officers proposed and our Chaplain Msgr. Lloyd Aiken approved the idea that Sacred Heart would initiate a KofC Fifth Sunday Mass. Simply put, in each month that has five Sundays (March 31, June 30, September 29, December 29), on the fifth Sunday, the Knights will come to a specific Mass and sit together to celebrate as a group (Mass time to be announced in the bulletin well in advance). We have asked the Ushers to reserve just 3 or 4 pews for the Knights and their families to attend Mass together as a Council, pray together and help us to grow in our faith. The Council will propose a different time for each Fifth Sunday, subject to Msgr. Aiken s approval. After each Fifth Sunday service the Knights will buy and serve Coffee and Donuts in the Mother Seton room for the parishioners who attended that Mass. The benefits of this Fifth Sunday Mass would be to help bring the Knights closer together. It would help reinforce two of our founding principles. Unity, that we stand together in our Faith. Fraternity, that as Knights we can band together as brothers to help and encourage one another. This will help us show the Parish of Sacred Heart that there is a Knights of Columbus contingent here at Sacred Heart, available to help the Parish. On Sunday, March 31, the Council will celebrate our first Fifth Sunday Mass at the 7:30 am Mass. In the Mother Seton Room, after the Mass, we will be serving donuts and coffee to all in attendance at the Mass. Msgr. Aiken has approved for us to have reserved seating for the Knights and our Families. The Council Officers are asking our Brothers to please support this benefit to the Knights. It only happens Four times this year. Council Admission Degree Team By Ron Spohn Immaculate Lady Council is starting up an Admission Degree Team. Yes, you heard that right. Our Council used to have a Degree Team and it has vanished over the years. However, there s considerable interest to renew our Degree Team and as of right now we have a good start. Let me introduce to you the Team that has volunteered. John Kmiecik, Dave Clement, Victor Lengrand, Brian Bogdanski and Ron Spohn (no surprises here). If you would like more information about the Degree Team please approach any one of us to talk to us about it. Just talking does not mean you automatically joined. We still need help Brothers! Will that be you? 8

Chaplain s Report By Deacon Jim Nuzzo No good deed goes unpunished. I never liked that phrase. Until high school I didn t understand it. I had no idea why someone would say a good deed would be punished, after all it s a good deed. As I got older I began to realize that good deeds don t automatically get rewarded and that sometimes the good deed itself can lead to problems. As Knights we run into this problem. Although, most of our good deeds are appreciated, some are not noticed and a few like our work in the Pro Life movement are demonized. I think we all know the gospel where Jesus heals a man s withered arm on the Sabbath. His reward for His good deed was a death sentence. A death sentence because to the Pharisees this miracle was the last straw. Jesus broke the law, Jesus was becoming too popular and Jesus threatened both their authority and power. Pharisees knew that if they were going to stop Jesus they had to stop Him now. Jesus knew He was breaking the law and that His enemies would be inflamed to the point that they would want to kill Him. But, since healing the man s arm was the right thing to do, He did it anyway. The following is a prayer from Mother Theresa. People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. Catechism Corner By Bob Wagner Lord God, please help us to place all our trust in You to help us all find You and make You a priority in our lives. Here is a little review. Why are we here? Our parents were needed for our conception, but God created us and loves us more than we can ever know. He gave us our own DNA, made us all unique, separate individuals from our conception. We are created in the Image and likeness of God and are the only earthly creatures who can know and love God. God gave us everything that we are, have and live with. God created everything, and He 12

gave us a powerful and deadly tool, our free will, which He will not overrule. God only wants us to believe in Him, to love and obey Him and to follow His commandments and the laws of His Church. It is strictly up to us how we live our earthly lives which determines where we spend eternity. God is merciful and just and we will all be judged at the moment of our death. Here are a few of the many paragraphs in the Catechism regarding this topic; I strongly recommend getting a Catechism and reading it to learn more about your Faith. 222 Believing in God, the only One, and loving him with all our being has enormous consequences for our whole life. 309 If God the Father almighty, the Creator of the ordered and good world, cares for all his creatures, why does evil exist? To this question, as pressing as it is unavoidable and as painful as it is mysterious, no quick answer will suffice. Only Christian faith as a whole constitutes the answer to this question: the goodness of creation, the drama of sin and the patient love of God who comes to meet man by his covenants, the redemptive Incarnation of his Son, his gift of the Spirit, his gathering of the Church, the power of the sacraments and his call to a blessed life to which free creatures are invited to consent in advance, but from which, by a terrible mystery, they can also turn away in advance. There is not a single aspect of the Christian message that is not in part an answer to the question of evil. 355 "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them. Man occupies a unique place in creation: (I) he is "in the image of God"; (II) in his own nature he unites the spiritual and material worlds; (III) he is created "male and female"; (IV) God established him in his friendship. 356 Of all visible creatures only man is "able to know and love his creator". He is "the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake", and he alone is called to share, by knowledge and love, in God's own life. It was for this end that he was created, and this is the fundamental reason for his dignity: What made you establish man in so great a dignity? Certainly the incalculable love by which you have looked on your creature in yourself! You are taken with love for her; for by love indeed you created her, by love you have given her a being capable of tasting your eternal Good. 357 Being in the image of God the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone. He is capable of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with other persons. And he is called by grace to a covenant with his Creator, to offer him a response of faith and love that no other creature can give in his stead. 358 God created everything for man, but man in turn was created to serve and love God and to offer all creation back to him: What is it that is about to be created, that enjoys such honor? It is man that great and wonderful living creature, more precious in the eyes of God than all other creatures! For him the heavens and the earth, the sea and all the rest of creation exist. God attached so much importance to his salvation that he did not spare his own Son for the sake of man. Nor does he ever cease to work, trying every possible means, until he has raised man up to himself and made him sit at his right hand. 13

A GOOD CATHOLIC MUST BE PRO LIFE PRO LIFE Report By Bob Wagner Lord God, please help us to respect all live from womb to tomb especially those in most need of Your mercy. Had a great time at the March for Life on Friday, January 18 and had great weather. This was the 46th annual march and I think it was the largest. No one ever gives estimates regarding the number of people attending the march which seemed a lot larger than in the past Vice President Mike Pence and his wife gave a presentation at the rally and introduced a video from President Donald Trump who gave a good strong Pro Life message. After we returned the Knights provided the marchers with pizza which was very much appreciated. Last month I mentioned a bill being passed in the state of Ohio that would prevent abortions after the heartbeat of the child was heard, and the Pro-Lifers were so happy because they expected a veto from the Governor, John Kasich, but had enough votes to override it. Well, it didn't happen because a republican congressman changed his mind and did not vote against the veto so the bill did not pass. That is why we must pray as much as we can for our country. As I write one of the big news items is the law passed on Tuesday in the State on New York that will allow an abortion for any reason up to the time of birth. It is called the Reproductive Health Act and is the most horrible new abortion law ever passed. It opens the door to invalidating any abortion limits and mandates that everyone takes part in the culture of death. It prevents pregnant women whose unborn children are killed by violent attacks from seeking justice. It also allows medical personnel other than doctors to perform abortions and babies born alive during an abortion are left to die. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the law and had the World Trade Center lit up in pink to celebrate its signing. Cuomo claims to be a Catholic and a lot of Catholics are requesting that he to be excommunicated; the Bishop's response was that excommunication is not an appropriate response and it should not be used as a weapon. Pray for our Church and our country. Abortion is being defended and pushed across our country and the world. Pray and do as much as you can to fight abortion and contraception, abortion's partner. We can always use another voice to help us pray at the abortion facility in Owings Mills every Saturday morning at 7:15 AM. We pray at the second light from Reisterstown Road going past Wegman's at 100 Painters Mill Road. St. Michael Prayer St. Michael the Archangel defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou O Prince of the heavenly Host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen 14

From the Desk of the Council Benefits Advisor: KofC Council Benefits Advisors Message By Mike Hurley Are you looking for an alternative to your CD? A single premium whole life insurance policy (SPWL) can be the perfect choice for people who want to maximize the amount of money they leave to their heirs, while still maintaining control of and access to their money. One premium payment pays the policy in full and guarantees lifetime benefits. It avoids probate and income tax if paid to the named beneficiary. But the premium payment gains interest, and unlike a CD, that interest does not get taxed each year. It accumulates and compounds tax deferred like an IRA. And it remains accessible to you. A partial withdrawal does not surrender the policy, it simply reduces the death benefit accordingly. Your cash can also be withdrawn, either in part or fully without the penalty schedules that are associated with CDs and annuities. In fact, the growth rate is almost always better than a CD if you can be approved at a standard non tobacco rate. SPWL is considered to be a modified endowment contract, so withdrawals are considered to be taxable income until and unless you begin withdrawing your original premium payment amount. Where do you find the money to acquire a SPWL? Well, usually from non-tax qualified" money, in other words, not traditional IRA money or 401K money. More likely it would be from a CD that is maturing, or from a life insurance lump sum benefit that you receive as a beneficiary. You could use a ROTH IRA to purchase a SPWL policy. For example, if a healthy 65 year old knight took $50,000 and purchased a KofC SPWL policy, he would likely put $87,231 of paid up whole life insurance immediately in place. If he died (or should I say, when he died) his beneficiary would get that money with no income tax due. But his $50k accumulates interest and dividends, and remains accessible. At today's interest rates and dividend scale, in five years the cash value projects to be $59,904...in ten years $73,267. The increase in cash value also creates an increase in the life insurance amount. The SPWL is a very useful, and increasingly popular financial tool to reduce one's taxable assets and increase tax advantaged assets. Knights of Columbus offers SPWL to members and spouses up to age 80 years and six months. The death benefit can be as small as $5000. Remember, if you have good health, it is not only a blessing, it is also a financial asset that can be used to acquire a SPWL policy. Please me at Michael.hurley@kofc.org or call my cell to arrange a personal proposal. Fraternally, Michael Hurley, FIC Council Benefits Advisor 15
