The surgery was successful and I am surprised at how clearly I can see now.

I want to thank brother Ron Spohn for filling in as guest editor of the Voyager while I underwent cataract surgery in October and November. The surgery was successful and I am surprised at how clearly I can see now. I also want to thank those of you who were able to respond and help fund the Casserole program; the Nuzzo family (Michael s Septic service), the Kmiecik family, Lynn Maher, the St. Vincent De Paul society and several anonymous donors. Your charity has allowed the program to continue to feed the homeless and less fortunate for these past months. I would like to recognize brother Derek Anderson for his outstanding effort in selling car raffle tickets during September and October. Thanks to Derek s efforts we raised over $2,000 for the council that allowed us to fund the Memorial Mass and charitable giving. Look for Derek to begin this effort again next year, likely in the summer. Last, see the flyer at the end of the newsletter. We are having a breakfast on Sunday December 17 th to support the Christmas Assistance program. Brother Dave Coyne is organizing this event and we are trying something new this year. In place of a fixed price per person/family we will ask for a good will offering. This is where people donate what they can. It has been tried in other parishes to success. Also, it allows families to come who otherwise might not afford to attend. Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas. Next month s Voyager will be only. The next printed Voyager will come out at the end of January (in time to ask for help with the Father/Daughter Dance). Through our efforts we raised over $ to assist these individuals. (Dave Coyne) Council Christmas Party Wednesday, December 20 th The annual Council Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday, December 20 th beginning at 7pm. Sacred Heart Parish Picnic is on Sunday, September 24 and our council will again run this event. Help is needed with the set-up, grilling, serving and clean up afterwards. We will meet on the school side parking lot at 11:00 to set up. The picnic starts after the noon mass and we should be finished with clean up around 5:00. We need lots of volunteers and if you can only work part of the time that is OK. To volunteer please send an to ricksiebert@comcast.net. If the weather is bad this picnic will be moved gym/west room. Blood Drive Request PDGK Chris Rodgers is seeking someone to take over the Parish Blood Drive. (For those who do not know, Chris entered the seminary in Emmitsburg this past September.) Typically, there is a January blodd drive in the parish. Chris would be more than happy to guide you in setting it up and running it, he just does not have the ability to be here. If you are interested, please contact Chris at general719@hotmail.com. Casseroles for Our Daily Bread Every fourth Tuesday in the West Room. Tuesday, December 26 7pm Knights of Columbus Christmas Assistance Program The Sacred Heart of Glyndon council of the Knights of Columbus will be supporting local families with gifts and food at Christmas through our annual Christmas Assistance Program. Sacred Heart of Glyndon will be hosting a breakfast this year on December 17 and the donations from this event will assist in funding the Christmas Assistance Program. The majority of funding for this program comes from this breakfast that is organized by the Knights of Columbus but we welcome additional donations to support this worthy cause. We will be accepting financial 2

3 donations from now until our council Christmas Party which is tentatively set for December 20. Checks should be made out to Knights of Columbus #5208 and can be left at the Parish Center in the care of Deacon Jim Ryan or mailed to David Coyne at 963 Lori Jean Drive, Westminster, MD We also welcome gifts of turkeys and hams for the families and encourage you to bring non perishable food items to our annual Christmas Party noted above. I would like to thank all of you who have supported us in the past and hope you can find it in your heart to support us again this year. The families we are able to assist are always grateful and in helping them, we bear witness to God s love for them. We announce to them the Good News of great joy which is the Christmas message. Rosary Before each meeting, 7pm Come pray the rosary every First and Third Wednesday at 7pm before the meetings in the West Room. Everyone is invited, not limited to Knights. Chaplain Report Advent is a time of perpetration. It s a time of alms giving, and forgiveness. It is a time to sit in stillness, listening to the word of God as we spiritually prepare for the second coming of Christ and the celebration of Christmas. Advent is a time to push aside the busyness of the holiday season to remember why the birth of Jesus is such a landmark event. Why John the Baptist cried out in the wilderness and why today, even among the unchurched, the celebration of Christmas reaches in to the heart of people causing them take notice of as well as live the teaching of Jesus. Sometimes the most trying part of following Jesus are our holiday routines. Maybe it s having Christmas dinner with in-laws that unnerves us (turn the other check). Maybe its spending the Christmas day with a sibling who hurt us (forgive 7 x 70). Maybe it s visiting our parents when we rather be with our friends (do on to others as we would do until you). Jesus Christ rose from the dead. That s why Christmas is such an important feast. It s a day we recognize and acknowledge that God became man. It s the day that the second person in the Holy Trinity became a baby and it s in the baby Jesus that we place our hope and joy. Advent and Christmas help us to grow closer to God because they encourage us to take charge of our faith and live it. And once we live with Christ we wouldn t want to live without Him. 4 Pro-Life Report A GOOD CATHOLIC MUST BE PRO LIFE. Lord God, shower us with Your Grace to bring us back to the respect and love of life from womb to tomb. Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. It has been reported that the FBI requested all the documents on November 14 related to the investigation of Planned Parenthood sale of baby body parts. Both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the House Select Investigating Panel investigations resulted in criminal referrals. The Center for Medical Progress director David Deleiden has shown by his videos that Planned Parenthood violated many laws in their sale of aborted baby body parts. Cecil Richards who is the president of Planned Parenthood is paid $957,952 a year and her goal is to destroy David Deleiden in court. She hired attack dog lawyers to sue David for racketeering. The National Abortion Federation has filed its own racketeering lawsuit against David as has the University of Washington in Seattle. In addition to these the attorney general of California is charging David with 15 felonies in criminal court. These cases are all based on frivolous charges but they still require a complex multi front costly defense which may go on for quite some time. David Deleiden does not have the money required to fight these lawsuits; he is represented by the Thomas More Society law firm which represents him at no cost as they do for any Pro Life group they help. Their concern is they will not have the funds needed for this court defense because Planned Parenthood has a lot of money and their goal is to destroy David. If they run out of funds to defend David, Planned Parenthood will win by default. If you want to make a donation you can send it to the Thomas More Society, Dept. W1711, 19S. LaSalle St., Suite 603, Chicago, Illinois, or go to to make a donation. We can still use some brother Knights to help us pray at the abortion facility in Owings Mills on Saturday mornings at 7:15 AM. Bob Wagner Catechism Corner Lord God, help us to celebrate with prayer the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas day and to help us make Him a larger part of our lives. We will never be able to understand the depth of God's love for us. Even though we disobeyed God He sent His Son to become incarnate so He could start the Catholic Church and also suffer and die on the Cross to open the gates of Heaven for everyone. We will be celebrating this great event, Our Lord Jesus Christ becoming man, born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to save us from our sinful lives. Advent begins on December 3 and is the time for us to prepare for the Birth of Christ; a time for prayer and thanksgiving. 4

5 Here are a few paragraphs from the many in the Catechism regarding Christmas. I recommend you read the Catechism to learn more about your Faith. A Catechism is a good Christmas gift 456 With the Nicene Creed, we answer by confessing: "For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man." 457 The Word became flesh for us in order to save us by reconciling us with God, who "loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins": "the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world", and "he was revealed to take away sins": Sick, our nature demanded to be healed; fallen, to be raised up; dead, to rise again. We had lost the possession of the good; it was necessary for it to be given back to us. Closed in the darkness, it was necessary to bring us the light; captives, we awaited a Savior; prisoners, help; slaves, a liberator. Are these things minor or insignificant? Did they not move God to descend to human nature and visit it, since humanity was in so miserable and unhappy a state? 524 When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming.by celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: "He must increase, but I must decrease." My Brothers All, District Deputy Report The new fraternal year has started out well. All councils are moving forward with growth of the order, which is very important. We need to ask young men to join the order, not only for the growth of our councils but for the good of the Order. In 10 years the Knights of Columbus will go into what is being called a Death Spiral, that we cannot recover from. We will be losing more members than we are bringing in. As an example we had 600 members called home to our Lord in fraternal year. The Supreme Chaplain has reported for every 1 new Catholic, 6.45 leave the Church. Getting men into the Knights helps the order and keeps families in the Church. Don t forget to ask old guys like me to join, but remember the younger gentleman, who have families and are looking for increased faith, helping the communities and parishes. Vivat Jesu, Michael Hurley, FIC Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas Coloring Contest Contest Rules: All students of public and private schools who are parishioners at Sacred Heart Parish are eligible to enter. There are three age group categories: Grades Kindergarten -2, Grades 3-5, and Grades 6-8. The theme of all posters must express the theme, Keep Christ in Christmas The poster must be on poster board or paper measuring 12 inches by 18 inches. The poster must be the actual work of the student submitting it and collaboration with teachers and family members is encouraged. Contestants may use water color, crayon, ink, or any combination thereof. No computer graphics, no pictures from books, magazines, etc, and no collages. Glitter and items to provide a 3-D effect may also be used such as cotton balls, etc. Appropriate slogans or verses can be incorporated into the work. Each poster must have a 3 X 5 index card on the back of the poster which lists the following information: Artist Name, Telephone Number, Name of Parent/Guardian, School and Grade, Age and Home Address. Judging will be based on the following categories: 1. Slogan (How clearly the theme is presented) 30 points 2. Visuals (How well do the visuals convey the message) 30 points 3. Overall impact (How effectively the poster captures the attention and causes reflection on the topic) 40 points Prizes: A $50.00 cash prize will be issued to the winner in each age group.
