2 MUSINGS FROM MIKE MINISTRY IN MOTION A lot of what you hear these days gives you the feeling that if you would only do more things will turn out OK. Work more hours. Get your kids in more activities. Take better vacations. It even happens in church: Have more groups, more worship services, more projects, and then more people will come and everything will be OK. Think of it as Ministry by Motion we are doing all this stuff, therefore God will be happy with us and bless us. If you look at the calendar in June, there is a lot of motion around here: In just the first week of the month there is a Brunch for Red Bird Mission, A Concert for Hunger, and the Church Picnic. Lots of motion, but take a look at the why of each of those events: - The Red Bird Team will be taking almost 30 people from Butler UMC and we are the catalyst group for the whole group of 100+ people. And even though it is easy to take it for granted, every summer young people and adults get their lives changed and their faith reinforced through this experience. There is ministry in the motion - The Concert for Hunger is the dream of Lauren Shepard, who is majoring in music and concert promotion. She also has a deep calling to serve Christ by doing all she can to feed hungry people. The church is giving her and her music sorority friends a venue and a reason to share their gifts for a larger purpose. There is ministry in that motion. - The Church Picnic is an afternoon of good food, water, games, and just being able to enjoy each other. There is something to be said for just sitting in the shade with friends and fellow church members to catch up, watch the kids play and just become acquainted at new levels with each other. The Bible calls it fellowship and there is a ministry purpose in that motion. It is so easy to let the calendar carry you and just put yourself in a position where you are responding and reacting to what it says, especially at church. One of the great joys of being your pastor is to see the deep ministry purposes that there are in the things that we do. My hope and prayer is that we keep those ministry purposes at the center of all of the motion in our life, and that we let God s Holy Spirit guide us on the journey. That way we can live on purpose and with purpose and not just be a motion machine in search of some ministry. June 14 page 2 Grace and Peace, Pastor Mike

3 A MONTH OF SUNDAYS IN JUNE During the month of June, Pastor Mike will be preaching a brief series entitled: Heart and Soul Finding and Caring for Your Soul. In it, he will explore what the Bible is talking about when it refers to the soul, and the ways that our souls can become out of whack through our own neglect, life itself, and sin. June 1: Holy Communion Scripture: Mark 8:34 9:1 June 8: Baptism Scripture: Mark 4:1-9 Sermon: Soul The Operating System Sermon: Ten Feet Tall and Bullet Proof June 15: Men s Sunday Staying Strong in God June 22: Scripture: Mark 4:1-9 Sermon: Life in the Deep End June 29: Scripture: Luke 10:38-42 Sermon: The Soul and a Cluttered Life There s strong, and then there s God Strong. Getting into spiritual shape will be the theme of our Father s Day Men s Service on June 15 th. Classic cars and motorcycles are welcomed as always. We will be looking for gym equipment and decorating the church with it on Saturday, June 14 th, at noon. Get pumped up and show off your spiritual muscles. RED BIRD MISSION TRIP NEWS A huge thank you to everyone who supported the first Brunch in April and to Dawn Kruimer and Donna Tintle and their teams for the great scrap booking event on May 10 th. Between those two events we raised over $2,300 for the trip and we hope that you will support the trip with your gifts and continued support for the brunches on June 1 st and July 13 th. Also, please be in touch with the church office ( / umcbutler@gmail.com) if you would like to become a Prayer Partner for the trip. Every Prayer Partner will receive a copy of the devotion book that we will be using each evening on the trip and we invite you to be in daily prayer for the participants and the folks that we are serving. You cannot know how much your prayers mean to all of us. June 14 page 3

But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. It is better, if it is God s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. I Peter 3:15-17 Please plan to spend a beautiful day of fun and fellowship at Star Lake Camp in Bloomingdale. Picnic is from 11:30am 5:00 pm. Please pack you picnic basket with a salad or dessert to share. There is a large charcoal grill if you would like to grill. Enjoy row boats, paddle boats, swimming, tennis, horseshoes or relaxing in the shade in a lounge chair! Life Guards will be on duty from 12:30-4:30. Hope to see you there perfect for all ages! June 22, 2014 During Worship and Coffee Hour Sunday School will not meet on June 29 th and July 6 th, but will resume for the Summer on July 13 th with the Red Bird Brunch Celebration so please buy your tickets and wear red if you have it! Summer Sunday School will then continue to meet each Sunday through August 18 th in the Asbury Room at 10:30 am.
