2 MUSINGS FROM MIKE A Thousand Meaningless Conversations Would you tell someone you met five minutes ago your deepest thoughts and stories? I wouldn t either. It takes time to build trust. It takes time to discover that you can talk to another person about important and sensitive things. It takes a thousand meaningless conversations to build a community. It is through the thousand conversations that you will never remember you build the credibility and trust with another person so that you can come alongside them in a sensitive or a pressured time. Someone might say that in the Bible it seems like every conversation Jesus had was filled with meaning and purpose, and they would be right. The conversations the Gospel authors report to us are very meaningful and important, but they did not have the time (or the paper) to record the thousand meaningless conversations Jesus had with the disciples; while they walked the roads, sat around campfires, and did their common chores together. It was out of those came the building blocks for the incredibly important conversations recorded for you and me to read today. Why should you care about this? Sometimes people get impatient with the church community and accuse it of not having meaningful and important conversation, but could you understand with me the community that counts is an ongoing and constant process that we all need to work at together. Through all the conversations of life we show each other a willingness to show up and be present for each other. Would you also agree with me to be in prayer for each other so that when the important moment comes and the conversation will be filled with meaning that we will show up with open hearts and open hands for each other and the community around us? It is all part of the ebb and flow of being a community, it is all part of building this church as a place of safe and important conversation for everyone who is touched by our life and ministry. And it is built one meaningless conversation at a time. August 16 page 2 Shalom, Pastor Mike
