2 MUSINGS FROM MIKE Doing Something You Don t Want To Over the last month or so I have come face to face with some new medical realities in my life. In the last six weeks I found that I have sleep apnea and I have begun using a C-PAP machine in the last week. To be blunt I hate every part of the process. I dislike having to admit that I am not as robust and indestructible as I always thought I was. When I first tried the mask at the sleep center it was not comfortable and I did not make it through the whole night wearing it. The mask itself and the machine that comes with it is one more piece of equipment, one more thing on my life to-do list that I have to attend to every day just one more way life becomes more and more complicated when I sometimes crave things being simpler. But This process was a moment of honesty where I faced the fact that I have not been sleeping well for a while now and I did what I needed to in order to do something about it. The mask and machine, as much as I dislike them, are a means to be able to sleep and rest fully so that I can be at my best; for God, for my kids and the people in my life, for all of you and the mission we share. I am telling you about this because I find that life is like this: - Sometimes you have to admit, I need help for God or anyone else to be able to move in your life. - Sometimes a good goal (my health or spiritual well-being) can carry a big price tag (C-PAP or getting serious about your faith and spiritual life). - Funny thing, the more you do life with God s help the better you get at it. I prayed hard as I brought the machine home and began to use it and I am happy that I have so far been able to use it for full nights and I am hopeful. August 15 page 2 (continued on page 3)
3 MUSINGS FROM MIKE (continued from page 2) For me, this journey of the last few weeks has been a helpful and humbling reminder of what we do around here as a church: - Tell the truth about what we need, especially when we need help. - Take healthy and appropriate steps to get the help we need. - Have enough humility to let the process work for us and in us. - And then take that experience and let it drive us to be there for others in Jesus name. Make no mistake, I will dislike the darn machine as long as I have it, but I am deeply grateful to God that it is available for me and that God helped me to let go of my own pride so I can use it. What are you needing to do that your brothers and sisters in faith can stand by you and help? Grace and Peace, Pastor Mike A MONTH OF SUNDAYS FOR AUGUST 2015 Pastor Mike will continue the sermon series on The Parables of Jesus during August: August 2 nd : Communion, Scripture: Matthew 13:1-9, Sermon: Making Life Count August 9 th : Scripture: Luke 15:1-7 Sermon: The Relentless Love of God August 16 th : Scripture: Matthew 18:23-30 Sermon: Forgiveness Matters August 23 rd : Scripture: Luke 10:25-37 Sermon: The Meaning of Love August 30th: Scripture: Luke 12:13-21 Sermon: Missing the Point August 15 page 3

5 RED BIRD MISSION ROUND UP From July 11 th -18 th Butler UMC sent 30 people (10 of whom were first time attendees) to Red Bird Mission as part of an overall group of 126 people from 10 United Methodist Churches. Thanks to your support and your prayers we traveled safely and well together. During the week we accomplished the following: - Stripped and redid 1 ½ shingle roofs, while repairing a badly worn chimney on one. - Installed two metal roofs. - Installed and painted siding over a whole house. - Installed porch railings, steps, and gate; and built a stoop for someone s home. - One group had to shift gears from interior repairs to a living room ceiling to retarring a leaking tin roof so that the interior repairs could begin. - Eaves and fascia boards were repaired and replaced so that new gutters could be installed on a home. - One home received the beginnings of a 10x12 room addition for their family. - Several homes had interior walls moved, repaired, and/or replaced. - Two kitchen remodelings were done on the Red Bird campus and a bathroom was repaired and renewed. Thanks to all of you who supported us daily with prayer. Special thanks to: - Pat Inglis who handles the money and so many details for Butler and the whole group. - Jack Inglis who gets us great deals on transportation for the week. - Hugo Amaro, Tracey Gleason, Pat Inglis, and Adam Gleason who gave leadership as Team Leaders on the work sites. Thanks to the 35 households who stepped forward and supported the team with your gifts, and to all who attended and supported the Red Bird Brunches in the winter and spring. Thanks to the good folks of Red Bird who opened their homes and lives to us in remarkable ways. Thanks above all to God, who was active and present in every part of the journey and adventure we shared together. There will be a Red Bird Sunday before the summer is over and we will be hosting a thank you for everyone who supported us this year. Red Bird 2016 is July 16 th 23 rd, Signups begin in January August 15 page 5
