2 Musings from Mike You All Taught Me Again At the dedication of the 2017 Red Bird we tried to build the service to be like the devotions we do each night of the trip. So we sang, prayed, told the scripture in a fun way, and then people talked to each other There were people who loved it and thought it was one of the best things they had done in church in a long time. Turns out I also posted a satirical article on my Facebook page about a church that was pioneering a service for introverts a service where nobody has to talk to anybody. I got more feedback from a diverse group of people who told me how much they dislike having to talk to someone in church and how much the article, even though it was a joke, made sense to them. Hmmm..what is a leader in church to do? How do you plan for Sunday after Sunday and meet the needs of people at such opposite ends of things? Starting with whether or not you have to talk to anyone Well there is a big part of me that thinks that is the point. If we are really doing this thing called church right then there are going to be some parts of it that you are not wild about, and there are going to be some parts that mean an awful lot to you. Life is like that People are like that Jesus is like that the same Jesus who picked a government worker (Matthew) and an anarchist (Simon the Zealot) seeking the violent overthrow of the government as his disciples and he helped them to make it work. So are you willing to be part of a church that is working hard to hit the sweet spots for you? I hope so because we are. Are you willing to be part of church even during the times you have to grit your teeth a little bit because you can see it is very important to someone who is there with you and you have the sense that God is at work in what is going on? I hope so because if you can you are not just coming to church but you are being church to another person and you are willing to let someone who might be very different from you be the church back to you through the grace of God and the calling of Jesus. 3 A MONTH OF SUNDAYS FOR AUGUST Pastor Mike is taking a cue from the Red Bird Devotion Book and will be preaching on the Book of Jonah during the month of August in a series entitled: More Than a Fish Story August 6 th : Jonah 1: More Than a Fish Story Worship in the Park we will be making the best of summer and having a bilingual worship in Butler Park. Mark the Day and plan for 10 a.m. worship at Butler Park. If you would like to be part of the team setting up and taking down watch for the sign ups in worship. Bring your favorite beach or folding chair, or a blanket to use on the park lawn and be ready to enjoy the new day as we worship together. (In the event of rain, we will worship in the sanctuary at 10 a.m.) August 13 th : Jonah 2: In the Belly of the Beast August 20 th : Jonah 3: Didn t See That Coming August 27 th : Jonah 4: Angry Enough to Die VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Truck Driver Assistant and/or Warehouse Assistant CUMAC is looking for volunteers to assist their truck driver as he picks up and delivers the food, clothing and other donations that make their work possible. This role is absolutely critical to the work they do and does come with a few requirements. An assistant truck driver should be: Able to lift up to 50 pounds Physically able to lift and bend while loading and unloading trucks, as well as sit comfortably during trips Responsible. Must be reliable, timely and able to let them know when they can t make it. Friendly and respectful as a representative of their agency to their donors Comfortable following directions of their truck driver Volunteers are needed Mondays, Wednesdays Fridays from 8:30 or 9am till around 2pm. They ask that volunteers are available at least one day each week, and a long term commitment is preferable due to the training involved. Call or volunteer@cumacecho.org for more information. 4 STARTING SEPTEMBER 10 TH Disciple Fast Track is a 24 week reading of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation in the company and companionship of other seekers and friends. The journey is broken into two parts: Twelve weeks from Sept 10 to Nov 26 that will go through the Old Testament and twelve weeks from Jan-April spent in the New Testament. The group will meet on Sunday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church. The values of Disciple include: - Steady daily reading of the Bible in partnership with other members of your group. - Daily prayer for the concerns and needs of the group. - A weekly gathering for video presentation, review of the materials read, and conversation about questions, discoveries, and application of the Bible to everyday life. Sign-ups for Disciple are open now. If you have questions or would like to know more you may reach out to the church office ( / umcbutler@gmail.com) BABY BOX COMPANY at the Butler Library The Butler Library is now a Baby Box Distribution Center. Baby Boxes are inspired by the maternity packages given to expectant mothers in Finland. They double as a baby starter kit and a safe sleep space for infants. They are free to all expectant mothers and include new parent essentials such as diapers, breast pads and more. Register at Log on and watch a minute training course, after taking a quiz you will receive a certificate of completion. You can then collect your Baby Box at the Library. August 17 page 4

5 NEWS FROM CUMAC New Executive Director Welcomed After several months of planning and interviews, CUMAC is pleased to announce that we ve found our next Executive Director, Mark Dinglasan. Mark is an accomplished and committed leader with more than 15 years of experience in both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors. He brings an abundance of skills and knowledge to his new role and we're thrilled to have him on board. Mark started his career in the nonprofit sector as a lay mission worker building homes in the slums in the Philippines and leading youth programs in the United States. Upon deciding to move back to New Jersey in late 2016, he immediately began searching for an organization with whom he shared similar values and beliefs. This search led him to CUMAC and he is very excited to be joining a great team and organization. Mark will succeed Rev. Pat Bruger, who has led the organization since Pat announced her retirement in January 2016 and will conclude her term this month after 26 years with the organization. With Pat at the helm, CUMAC has grown over the years from a small food pantry run out of a borrowed church closet to a multi-service agency serving thousands of our neighbors in need every month. Our team will forever be grateful for Pat's leadership, which leaves us ready and poised to take CUMAC onward. With Mark's enthusiasm, skills and experience, we are confident that he will help CUMAC reach new heights as an organization. Welcome to the CUMAC family, Mark! Every summer CUMAC collects and distributes backpacks and school supplies to local children in need just in time for the new school year. With your support, donations allow us to reach hundreds of students in our community. 8 Vacation Bible School is August 21 st -25 th and we need your prayers now! For some kids the week of VBS is their only exposure to Christian Community and the Word of God and many look forward to this experience year after year, but do not continue to draw near to God for the rest of the year. Our scripture memory verse is Colossians 1:15-16 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created through Him and for Him. As you pray, please memorize this verse with us and pray that everyone participating will come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit - the Father will send Him in My name will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.
