1 West Broadway Baptist Church Volume 15 Issue From Our Pastor In the Greek language there are two different words for time. The first is "chronos" -- the word from which we get "chronology." Chronos time is the time that a watch or clock tells us -- the time of day. But the Greeks also used another word for time - "kairos" -- meaning a time of opportunity. That is the word that is used in Eph. 5:16 -- "make the most of the time [opportunity]." Chronos moments march on just like clockwork, but kairos moments -- moments of opportunity -- come at particular times and can be squandered. I believe WBBC is at a kairos moment -- a moment of opportunity right now. In terms of chronos time, WBBC is 109+ years old. In terms of kairos time, it is a moment of opportunity -- a moment that will help define the future of this church. We have subscribed to a prayer/outreach service known as Bless Every Home. This internet database service allows us to pray for people in specific neighborhoods by name and address. One of the most helpful features of this service is that it sends us the names and addresses of all the people who have moved into a specific zip code in the previous month. Studies have shown that people in transition are much more open to the Gospel message and to invitations to attend a worship service. We are launching an outreach emphasis to contact each of these new families when we receive their names. Our theme for 2019 is going to be Who s Your One? That theme is being promoted through the North American Mission Board for all of our churches this year. Stay tuned for more information, but for now begin praying about the person(s) you would like to see come to faith in Christ this year. We will follow a strategy of: Prayer Care Share. Who s Your One? This month marks the completion of my 8 th year at West Broadway and the beginning of year number nine. I am grateful to those who were members eight years ago and chose to step out in faith and try a different model of pastoral ministry. I rejoice in the many new people whom God has brought to join the WBBC family over the past eight years. I LOVE being your Pastor! Thank you for giving me that privilege. 2 From Our Associate Pastor Dear West Broadway Family, As I write this article, we are in the middle of a polar vortex. Simply put, that means it s really cold. That means we end up spending more time indoors trying to keep warm. It also means that we can accomplish more in terms of planning and preparing for times of getting out and doing things. Our Sanctuary Choir has begun preparing music for the new year for both our worship services and special presentations. If you would like to join us and share your gift with our church family, please come on Sunday evenings at 5:00 in the choir room. Our Children s Choir is meeting on Wednesday evenings as part of their teaching in missions and the work that our missionaries are doing around the world. The children are taught how to develop a concern for Christian missionaries around the world and those that they are attempting to reach with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We follow that up with music that not only teaches them basic musicianship and how to get the most out of the voice that God has given them, but also, music that is biblically based. They are having the truths of God impressed upon their hearts and minds as they sing. This is one of the reasons music is so important as a means of hiding God s Word in our hearts and developing as followers of Christ. This not only works for children but for adults as well. This is why I think it is important that during your devotional you not only read scripture and pray, but that you offer a song to God as well. Furthermore, if you don t consider yourself a good singer, you need not worry. Only God can hear you. You can obtain a hymnal to place alongside your Bible or you can go to websites that contain hymns and more contemporary songs. I pray that you can deepen your quiet times as you add music to your time with God. I believe you will find this to be a fruitful experience. In Christ, Brent Scoops And Scripture Looking for a way to serve? Scoops and Scripture is a ministry comprised of volunteers with a heart for Jesus and a desire to share the gospel. Scoops and Scripture partners with the local church to mobilize believers to engage people with the gospel in local residential facilities. West Broadway Baptist Church is looking for more volunteers willing to serve by sharing God's Word, helping with music, and eating ice cream with the residents. We meet at on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays at Signature Nursing Home on Six Mile Lane. 3 January has been a fun month for the youth group. We started the year off with an epic game of laser tag in the gym. We set up tables, partitions, trash cans, and anything else we could hide behind in the gym. We had a great turnout and I even saw a few new faces. The students are back in school now and they are starting to get busy, but I am encouraged by their commitment and consistency. Last week I gave all the students their own NIV MacArthur Study Bibles with their names engraved and a personal verse for each one. They were excited to receive them, and my hope is that it will help them to read and understand the Bible better as they study on their own. We finally set a date for summer camp! It will be from June 2nd-6th. It is going to be a little bit different this year. We rented a beautiful cabin on Lake Barkley with the hopes that we will be able to get away from the busyness of life and come together as a group around the Gospel. Keep an ear out on ways you can help us get ready for camp. We are also excited to welcome the church up to our Attic for the Big Game. Hopefully our stadium couch seating will give everyone a comfortable seat with a great view. Please be praying for our youth; that those who believe will be able to articulate the Gospel to their friends and family, and for those that are still on the path will be convicted and turn to Christ. Please pray for me as seminary ramps up this semester with three classes, one of which is Hebrew II. Boys and Girls Grades 1st-6th LRBA will be hosting a carnival at Waterson Lakeview Apts. for children living in the apartments and in surrounding neighborhoods. The Brotherhood is a group of men, open to all regardless of age or spiritual maturity, that seeks to support missions by educating men and encouraging them to participate in missions by Giving, Going and Getting on their knees in prayer. We seek also to grow men spiritually, encourage them to be godly men and husbands, to love their wives, carryout the Great Commission in their daily walk, and to guide men to an understanding of what God has in store for them through various Bible studies. The Brotherhood of WBBC just completed a Men's Conference with 14 men of WBBC with a fire in their hearts to be followers of Christ and to be Godly fishers of men. Brothers, we would love to see you come to our Men's Breakfast where we have good food and even better fellowship with our brothers. Our next Men's Breakfast is February 16 at 8:30am in the Fellowship Hall. Sweetheart Breakfast Sunday, February 10 8:30 am The men of the church will be serving breakfast to all our ladies on Sunday, February 10 th from 8:30 to 9:30 am. Please sign up in the Welcome Center. I also want to remind everyone that we will be having a Valentines "Sweetheart Breakfast" on February 10th at 8:30am in the Fellowship Hall. Please sign the sheet in the Welcome Center if you plan on bringing your Sweetheart so we know how much food to purchase. If the men are able, we could use you as cooks, servers, cleanup afterwards.
