1 West Broadway Baptist Church Volume 14 Issue From Our Pastor From Our Pastor We celebrate Easter Sunday once per year, this year on April 1 st. Some atheists are mocking that intersection of dates, saying that every Easter Sunday is April Fool s Day for Christians. In fact, they have it backwards. Psalm 14:1 reminds us, The fool has said in his heart there is no God, and Proverbs 9:10 testifies, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The calendar lists one specific Sunday each year as Easter Sunday, but we need to be reminded that for the Christian, EVERY Sunday is resurrection Sunday. We serve a risen Savior! Several years ago, researcher George Barna surveyed the religious beliefs of Americans. He cited several statistics that were disheartening, but one in particular really grabbed my attention. One of the questions asked of those Americans who said they were not people of faith was this question: Do you know why Christians celebrate Easter? Amazingly, 46% of those polled could not give an accurate answer. As we look toward Easter Sunday, would you look around and consider who you could invite to WBBC? With even the secular media calling attention to Passion Week and Easter Sunday, those who do not believe in Jesus will be thinking about Him. Many will be curious about why Christians celebrate Easter. So here are some simple questions we can ask our family members, friends, neighbors, work associates, classmates, and acquaintances: Do you go somewhere to church for Easter? If not, I would love to invite you to my church for our Easter morning service. I have read (you just read it here!) that many people don t understand the purpose of Easter. What do you think about Easter? Let s be inviters! Blessings, Pastor Tim WEST BROADWAY BAPTIST CHURCH 8420 Six Mile Lane Louisville, KY Pastor: Tim Beougher at wbbcpastor@gmail.com Assoc. Pastor: Brent Witten at wbbcmusic@gmail.com Youth: Adam Burton at wbbcyouthpastor@gmail.com Children: Teresa Cox at wbbcchildren@gmail.com Church office at wbbcsecretary@gmail.com WBBC office hours: 9 am-3:30 pm Tuesday-Friday WBBC PURPOSE STATEMENT The purpose of our church is to: Love God, Love Each Other, and Love Our World. We seek to fulfill that purpose by: Loving God through worship and prayer Loving Each Other through discipleship and fellowship Loving Our World through evangelism and ministry
2 From Our Associate Pastor I can t think of a better way to begin April than with the celebration of Easter and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 2:5 that even when we were dead in our transgressions, [God] made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved). These are amazing words that testify to our lost condition and the reality of new birth and new life through Jesus resurrection. His resurrection is our hope for an eternal future of life after death. May we invite others, as Pastor Tim has called us to, so that they too might take hold of this wonderful gift of eternal life. I am so proud of our Sanctuary Choir and their wonderful presentation of The Story on Maundy Thursday evening. I want to thank them for all of their hard work and dedication to providing music for our congregation that re-tells that familiar story of Christ s journey here on earth and His promise for us in Heaven. We pray that hearts were touched with the message of the gospel in a powerful way. I want to thank the church for its continued support of our music ministry here at West Broadway. I would also like to thank the Children s Choir for singing in worship on March 11. They are such a blessing to work with each Wednesday night. We encourage you to bring your children, grandchildren, and even, neighboring children on Wednesday nights to experience our missions friends, RA s, GA s, and choir. Blessings in Christ, Brent MEN S BREAKFAST/BOOK STUDY SATURDAY, APRIL 28 8:30 am (note date change) The Men s Breakfast/Book Study will meet on Saturday, April 28 at 8:30 am. The book study will be Chapter 19, Grace of Discipline in Kent Hughes Disciplines of a Godly Man. Scoops & Scripture Saturday, April 7 & April 21, Signature Nursing Home on Six Mile Lane. 3 In June, our students are heading to Chicago on a mission trip. There are a couple of opportunities our church family has to support this trip financially in the month of April. On April 16, we will be having a Chick-Fil-A day at the Stony Brook location (in front of Home Depot). Flyers will be available soon in the Welcome Center. April 22 will be our annual Spaghetti Lunch fundraiser. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. The youth will prepare baked spaghetti, salad, and bread. If you would be willing to make a dessert, please let me know. We would like to thank our church family for being so supportive of our young people. Faithfully yours, Sunday, April 22 YOUTH CHICK-FIL-A FUNDRAISERS Monday, April 16 & Tuesday, June 5 WBBC Kids Treehouse Teach Reach Encourage Excite West Broadway Baptist Church children s ministry exist to teach, reach, encourage and excite our children to glorify God. A big thank you to all of you for helping make our Easter Egg Hunt a success. It truly takes all of us. Ministry outreach events like this serve many purposes including fellowship for our church body, opportunity for members to reconnect, a light to the community, evangelism and fun for children. If you are able to follow up with our guests through writing a note or a visit please see Dave Hume or me. Thanks to Kentucky weather, my schedule has me at school much of June and returning in July. 5 Rainbow is very proud to share that the school has become a Level 3 in The Kentucky All Stars Program! Because of the continued hard work of our teachers, the school, and the church, we have been awarded $2,200 for their efforts in providing educational programs for our families and surrounding community! Kentucky All Stars is Kentucky's expanded five-star quality rating and improvement system, serving all early care and education programs. The system is based on Kentucky's Early Childhood Standard's and quality. It recognizes programs that have made a commitment to continuous quality improvement and provides programs with additional support. With this money, we hope to add some new equipment to our playground, for both the church and school to enjoy! Please come down to visit us during school hours, 9:00-12:00, so that you can see what Rainbow is all about! If you have any questions, or are interested in the program for next year, please contact Leigh Ann Smith at or rnspreschool@gmail.com. Financial Notes from the Finance Committee You may recall that with the passing of the 2018 budget in October of last year, the finance committee budgeted for an external audit. After meeting with an auditor, she suggested an external review in lieu of a full audit. Based upon the goals the finance committee has, the auditor suggested the review would be more economical, so in the spirit of fiscal responsibility, that is what is being planned. Finance will be meeting with the auditor again in May to outline the procedures that will be followed. The Finance Committee is working to provide both fiscal responsibility in the way the money is being handled, as well as sound policies and procedures that can be used to guide the financial work of the church in the future.
