It is so wonderful to finally be here with you all. Lindsay and I have been blown away at how welcoming and inviting you have all been to our family, and we are so excited to be here doing ministry with you all. Since not everyone was able to attend the Meet & Greet, I wanted to take a little time to further introduce myself and my family. I grew up in Arden, NC at a Lutheran camp called Lutheridge where my parents are the program directors. After high school I went to community college during the year and spent my summers working at Lutheridge, first as a counselor, then as an Area Director, and eventually as Co-Assistant Program Director alongside my wife, Lindsay. Working at camp was great, but school was not, and so I took a year off and joined Lutheran Youth Encounter, a non-profit that organizes young adults into musical bands and sends them out to play concerts. My band s region was West Coast, which actually meant we went to every state west of the Mississippi. It was an incredible year full of amazing relational ministry. The next summer I was back at Lutheridge, and it was there that Lindsay and I met. After a few more semesters in community college, I transferred to UNC- Charlotte where I completed my Bachelor s in Sociology. By this time, I was discerning a call to ordained ministry, and so when Lindsay and I were married in May 2013 we moved straight to Columbia, and I began seminary that Fall. After two years of coursework we moved to Cincinnati, OH for my yearlong internship, and it s there that Witten was born, on Halloween (or Reformation Day as we Lutherans say)! Last year I finished up my final year of seminary, was assigned to the North Carolina synod, and now we re here! Now that I ve written a bit to help y all better know us, Lindsay and I would really like to better know YOU! But I find that it is hard to really get to know someone when you only see them for a few minutes on a Sunday morning. So, one of the ways that we, along with council, have thought of to help us all to get to know each other better is by having dinner parties throughout September, October, and November. Here s out it will work: We are hoping to find seven to ten people/families who would be willing to host a dinner party for eight to ten people on one night sometime in the next three months. Once we have a list of hosts, we will put out sign-up sheets, so that everyone in the congregation that is able can sign up to attend one of the dinners. Lindsay and I will attend all of the dinners so that we have an opportunity to spend an evening of food and fellowship with as many of you as we possibly can. So, if you are interested in hosting one of these dinner parties, please send me an or talk to me after worship one day so that we can start planning out some dates. We continue to be beyond excited to have been welcomed into this community, and we can t wait to continue to get to know you all better, and continue to see how God is at work in this place!

Ordination of Pastor Jessie Canniff-Kuhn P a ge 4 Called by God and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Jesse Michael Canniff-Kuhn will be ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament on Monday, September 4, 2017, 2:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Cross at Lutheridge. The address is 2511 Hendersonville Road in Arden, NC If the weather is uncooperative we will relocate to the Lutheridge Chapel. Once inside the gate, proceed up the hill and there will be a sign with arrows indicating where to go. Your prayers and presence are requested. A light reception will follow the service at Lakeside Lodge. Because we will be outside and it will likely be hot, all rostered ministers are invited to sit where they please and simply bring a stole to put on for the Laying on of Hands. Red is the color of the day. Jesse has accepted a call to serve as Pastor at Lutheran Church of Our Father in Greensboro, North Carolina. First Communion Classes First Communion classes will be available for anyone who is interested. If your child is showing signs that she or he desires to receive Communion (or your child already takes Communion but would enjoy a refresher course), then PLEASE join us for class! We will meet on October 22 nd and 29 th at 9:45 AM, and then children will receive their First Communion on November 5 th. Please speak with Pastor Jesse if you are interested. Martin Luther Documentary On Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. EDT, PBS gives the Reformation television exposure when it airs Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World. This one-time only, nationwide showing is a great reason for congregations, families, and individuals to gather with community and friends and explore Luther s lasting impact on Christianity. The show is also available for private showings for those unable to watch that evening.

Back to School Backpacks P a ge 5 This year your generosity allowed us to divide the Back to School supplies among three schools: Sedgefield Elementary, the Newcomers School, and Union Hill Elementary. Thank you for giving the students a great start to the new school year. School Supplies Sorting and Delivery Day Newcomers School/Sedgefield Elementary & Union Hill Elementary August 1 marked the first day of the Together in Education school year. This means the time has come to remind school supporters to link their VIC cards to #2007 for KinderNest! Can you lend a Hand(print)? A new banner is being made for Lutheran Church of Our Father, and we need your handprints on it. The theme is "God's work; Our Hands." We hope to get the handprints of every church member on it, from age 0 to 100, because we are all part of God's work in the world. Look for the banner and paint in the fellowship hall on Sunday, August 27 and September 3, during the half hour before and after the church service on those days. "God's Work; Our Hands" day is September 10, so we need to have it done by then. Grace Titzer will help you with the paint and the placement of your handprints.

P a ge 6 Guidelines for Ushers and Altar Care Worship and Music has updated our guidelines for Ushers and Altar Care to ensure that all members are able to participate in leadership roles. By updating these guidelines children can also learn the purpose and procedure to these roles. Updated Guidelines for Ushers Only adults should direct people to the table for communion. Children can assist with handing out bulletins and offering. Children should have an adult mentor until they are ready to pass out bulletins or pass offering plates without assistance. If a child has difficulty the committee may request additional mentoring. Volunteers cannot sign up for ushering and altar care for the same month. Updated Guidelines for Altar Care Children can assist with Altar Care by doing age appropriate tasks. Children should have adult supervision while assisting with Altar Care. If a child has difficulty the committee may request additional mentoring. Volunteers cannot sign up for ushering and altar care for the same month. Christians in Action CIA - Christians in Action (contact person- Amy Kieffer (336) linus632@yahoo.com ) Christians in Action is an amazing program designed for the youth of Our Father, ages 4 to 5th grade. Our children are invited to participate in this fun loving and creative learning time of the scriptures designed to reach them where they are. It takes place right after the children s message is given. They will go with 2 adult volunteers to the educational wing of Our Father for this learning and growing time. They will return to church just after the offering has been collected, or there about in order to take communion with their family. Christian Education is currently seeking adult volunteers to help deliver this program to the children of our church. No experience is required, just a short amount of your time in planning and presenting the lesson/activity to the children of Our Father. For more information on this program and guidelines for volunteers, please see the full document on the bulletin board and copies for volunteers on the table in the narthex.

P a ge 7 Our Father Youth CROP Hunger Walk WHAT is the CROP Hunger Walk? WHEN? WHERE? WHO gets the money? WHO is helped? Each year, our community comes together to raise money and awareness for hunger relief locally and around the world through the CROP Hunger Walk. Roughly 1,000 CROP Hunger Walks happen every year in the United States. Walkers ask family, neighbors, colleagues and places of worship to pledge dollars for their participation in a 3 mile walk. Our steps symbolize the daily journey others must make for food and clean water. First Baptist Church 405 N. Main St. High Point The High Point CROP Hunger Walk will be held on 9/24/2017 beginning at 4:00 pm. (Registration begins at 3:00 pm). First Baptist Church 405 N Main St. High Point One-fourth of the funds raised stays in our community to support local hunger and poverty fighting programs. This year s walk will support the work of Greensboro Urban Ministry. The remaining money is used by Church World Service to alleviate hunger in poor communities throughout the world. In addition to assisting hungry families in our area, CROP helps families in the United States and around the world who are victims of disasters like Hurricane Sandy, the earthquake in Haiti, and refugees fleeing war or famine. CROP also supports development projects in the world s poorest communities - agricultural training, health clinics, micro-businesses, schools, and fresh water wells. WHO should participate? EVERYONE! CROP Hunger Walks are community events involving everyone who wants to fight hunger around the block and around the world. Our walk encourages teams and individuals from public and private schools, civic and cultural groups, area businesses, and all faith groups.

P a ge 8 Hurricane Harvey Relief The situation: Please stand by our neighbors as we begin the long road to recovering from Hurricane Harvey, one of the most catastrophic storms to hit the country in more than a decade. Our response: Lutheran Disaster Response s affiliate is actively present, collaborating with community leaders and officials to initiate the proper responses, particularly the long-term recovery efforts. Together, we have a strong history of working with disasters in the Gulf Coast area. Recovery efforts are expected to take years, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected through every phase of this disaster. We invite you to stand by our neighbors on the Gulf Coast during this time. Your gifts ensure that our church will be able to provide help and hope for those left homeless or otherwise affected by this disaster for years to come. Gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response, designated for "Hurricane Response United States" will be used entirely (100 percent) for this disaster until the response is complete. Together, we can help provide immediate and long-lasting support. Give today to support the needs in this response and others like it. What you can do: Pray Please pray for the people who have been affected and are in the path of Hurricane Harvey. May God s healing presence give them peace and hope in their time of need. Give Gifts to US Hurricane Relief will be used to assist those affected by the hurricane until the response is complete. Connect: To learn more about the situation and the ELCA s response: Share this bulletin insert with your congregation. Sign up to receive Lutheran Disaster Response alerts.
