2 IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH Mattoon, Illinois ST. COLUMCILLE CHURCH Sullivan, Illinois JANUARY 20, 2019 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee. John 2:1-11 Prepare For Next Sunday s Readings INTRODUCTION In next Sunday s Gospel, (January 27), Israel was sustained throughout countless struggles by God s word revealed in the law. We Christians do not identify ourselves by the same criterion, but by a larger sense of law disclosed by Jesus, the living revelation of God. His ministry proclaimed a new law rooted in love that is lived out on behalf of others. A liberating law, it requires a searing focus and discipline by us as individuals and as a community. Providentially, the same spirit that animated Jesus animates us. SCRIPTURE READINGS Nehemiah 8:2-4, 5-6, 8-10: Ezra reads the law to the post-exilic Jewish community 1 Corinthians 12:12-30: The baptized community is like one body with many parts Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21: Jesus announces his mission to bring good news Readings for the Week of January 20, 2019 Monday: Heb 5:1-10/Ps 110:1, 2, 3, 4/Mk 2:18-22 Tuesday: Heb 6:10-20/Ps 111:1-2, 4-5, 9 and 10c/Mk 2:23-28 Wednesday: Heb 7:1-3, 15-17/Ps 110:1, 2, 3, 4/Mk 3:1-6 Thursday: Heb 7:25 8:6/Ps 40:7-8a, 8b-9, 10, 17/Mk 3:7-12 Friday: Acts 22:3-16 or Acts 9:1-22/Ps 117:1bc, 2/Mk 16: When there is a Funeral Mass (M-F) there is No Morning Mass MONDAY 8:00AM JANUARY Increase in Vocations to the Priesthood TUESDAY 5:30PM Joseph Walk WEDNESDAY 7:00AM Joseph Walk THURSDAY 5:30PM Carolyn Suerdieck FRIDAY 8:00AM Bob Beall SATURDAY 4:00PM Lucile Todd SUNDAY 8:00AM People of Our Parish 10:30AM Virginia & Gregg Grierson Your Parish & Faith Stewardship Giving at a Glance 526 Registered Families Fiscal Year July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 IC CHURCH STAINED GLASS WINDOWS PROJECT AND CHURCH SOUND SYSTEM Immaculate Conception Total Weekly Budget 10, /13/19 Parish 7, Deficit/Surplus for Weeks - 3, Year-To-Date Budget 304, Year-To-Date Collected 308, Deficit/Surplus for Year + 4, Amount Owed: $46, Major Project Funds: $ 1, Unpaid Balance: $ 9,194.00

Many thanks to all who brought gifts for the baby Jesus shower. I think it was quite a success as it took several trips to get all from the car to Choices Pregnancy Center. They were also so appreciative. This helps so many. Your giving is a blessing to others and surely will bring God's blessings to you. Gail Loveall, Pro-Life Chair The Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues. faith formation series has begun and is on Wednesdays at 9:30 am in the Parish Hall. If you can t make all the meetings, come when you can. Any questions, call Gail Loveall at The annual dinner meeting of the St. Elizabeth Council of Catholic Women will be held at 6:00PM on Monday, January 28, in the parish hall. All women of the parish are welcome to attend! NEWS FOR ST. C & IC Our January contribution envelope packets contain an envelope for IC (ACSA and Catholic Times) and St. C (Catholic Times). The ACSA envelope goes toward our parish assessment. Checks can be made out to ACSA and will be forwarded to the diocese. Each registered household should be receiving the Catholic Times. If not, PLEASE let the parish office know. The parish is billed for the CT based on a percentage of parish income. Your contribution is applied towards our total parish bill. Thank you for your help in meeting these parish expenses. 3 A Pilgrim s Progress. As I prepared to write these lines this week the knock at the rectory door was from a homeless woman several months pregnant. Through your sacrifices for I.C. St. Vincent DePaul our parishioners were able to assist her in finding housing for herself and her unborn child. These efforts coupled with our CHOICES PREGNANCY AND HEALTH, the St. Hedwig Haus of Hospitality (3 homes now) in Charleston and the Haven to name a few are what I call the front lines of the pro-life movement. So often we hear the shrill charge that prolifers only care about children until they re born. Your support for these local efforts disprove that lie every day. Never believe your prayers, your change in a baby bottle, your hours volunteering at CHOICES, Catholic Charities, St Vincent DePaul, the Haven or the St. Hedwig Haus are not making a difference. Other key parts of our pro-life response must always be chastity education in our Christian formation programs, respect for the gift of our sexuality, fertility awareness, natural family planning, and help for those who struggle with pornography and other sexual addictions. As nineteen members of our parish community return this weekend from the March for Life in Washington, D.C. (along with tens of thousands of youth from across the U.S.) let us continue to pray and work for that day when the dignity of every human person is honored in life and protected in law. Pax et Bonum, fr john EXODUS 90 A challenging 90 Day period of prayer and asceticism supported by a fraternity of Like minded men. Check out the Pillars at Exodus90.com Join the Wednesday Men s Prayer Huddle at 5:30 A.M. for Fraternal Support. Our 90 Day journey to Easter and new freedom begins January 21 st!
4 Change for Choices! The annual baby bottle change collection has been one of the most successful and vital fundraising opportunities for our Choices Health and Pregnancy Center in their daily efforts to assist young women with life saving choices. Since Choices need income throughout the year and since you and I have loose change every day or week as well, these life saving bottles will be available in our church vestibules throughout the year. Simply pick up one of the bottles in the basket in the St. Columcille or I.C. vestibule, fill it with your change, and return it to church at any Sunday mass. This income throughout the year will help Choices help others. Our Mattoon Choices office is also in need of more volunteers. This could include helping mothers get to appointments, helping with mailings, etc. Please call Shannon today and see what you can do to help: WEEKLY CALENDAR OF EVENTS 01/20 Coffee & Catechesis 9:15AM-10:15AM CFC 01/20- PSR 9:15-10:15AM CFC 01/21- Parish Office Closed MLK Day 01/23- Men s Prayer Huddle 5:30AM IC Chapel 01/23- Spanish Prayer Group 6:00PM PC 01/23- Eucharistic Adoration 7-8:00PM IC Chapel 01/24 ICC Prayer Group 8:30AM PC 01/24 ACTS Class 9:30AM PC 01/24 Fulfilled Part 2 Class 7:00PM PC 01/27 Fundraiser Soup Supper 4-6:00PM PC NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING Jan. 26 2:30-4PM at St. Francis, T-Town March 9 St. Isidore, Bishop Creek April :30PM at St. Anthony, Effingham Call Kate Pruemer, FCP at or at kpruemer@gmail.com to register. 5 We all have a vision for where we want to be in 2019 Maybe yours includes being a part of the St. Vincent De Paul Society? If you have been contemplating how you may help serve those most in need in our local community or have the desire to become more involved in your church community, The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Immaculate Conception would like to invite you to join our group this year. Interested individuals can learn more about our group by attending our first meeting of the year on Wednesday, January 16th at 6:30pm in the K of C Hall. When you attend this meeting you will find a welcoming group that gathers for just 30 to 45 minutes on the 3 rd Wednesday of every month to say a few prayers, review and discuss how can we best serve the needs of the poor in our community, and lastly, say a few prayers for those of our community and parish who are at most need of our prayers. Responsibilities for being a part of this organization usually requires a commitment of less than 3 hours per month, as we meet with clients requesting financial assistance from the Society on the 2 nd and 4 th Saturdays of each month from 9am to 11am in the Church basement, and members rotate the responsibility for this task so that members with weekend plans are rarely if ever inconvenienced. In addition, we usually plan at least one fundraising activity each year that members assist in planning and working the event. Interested individuals that would like more information about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are welcome to call the organization members listed below if they have questions: Joann Reinhart-Curtis Shady Raboin WHITE HOUSE RETREAT Calling All Men of the Parish, our annual parish men s retreat at White House Retreat in south St. Louis County will take place from March 7 to March 10, Join us at White House s beautiful 80-acre campus high on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.
