HAPPY NEW YEAR Please note that Lutheran Church office will be closed on Tuesday, January 2, 2017 for the New Year s holiday. EPIPHANY Epiphany is January 6. Epiphany means manifestation. On this day we celebrate the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles that is, to all nations. Some Christian traditions celebrate three great epiphanies on this day: the magi s adoration of the Christ child, Jesus baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, changing water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the great epiphany of God s grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to the light that shines brightly in our midst. MITTEN TREE Sunday School Sponsored Opportunity: The 4th and 5th Grade Class put up the Mitten Tree and it will remain up until Epiphany in January. Mittens, hats, scarves, socks, underwear, and sweat pants can be placed on the tree. They will be given to LSI, MCSA, and schools for children in need. GIFT OF GOODIES On Sunday, January 8, hospitality will be Gift of Goodies. You are asked to clean out all of those left over cookies, fudge, candy, etc. and bring it to church to share. That way you get to clean out leftovers and we all get to taste the goodies.

Please join the Adult Education Group as we discuss spiritual journeys during the season of Epiphany! We will watch the series, "Sacred Journeys with Bruce Feiler. Sacred journeys are as old as humanity, yet they're more popular today than ever before. Tens of millions go on a pilgrimage each year. In this landmark series, New York Times best-selling author Bruce Feiler travels with American pilgrims on six historic pilgrimages. They set out from the ordinary and seek the extraordinary. - In Lourdes, France, bathe in sacred waters with wounded soldiers from around the world in a moving search for healing and reconciliation. - In southern Japan, trek with Buddhist pilgrims on an 800-mile, 88-temple journey as they seek personal salvation and renewal. - In Jerusalem, follow the trail of pilgrims from the three Abrahamic traditions as they ground their faith in one of the holiest cities on Earth. - In Mecca, go behind closed doors of the Hajj in a rare, intimate look at pilgrims making the trip of a lifetime. - In India, plunge into the Ganges during the largest human gathering on earth, the Kumbh Mela, which takes place every 12 years. - And in Nigeria, dance at water's edge with African- Americans at a spectacular Yoruba festival where they reclaim their religious roots. Unprecedented in scope, Sacred Journeys with Bruce Feiler will forever change how you view your own spiritual journey. Join us each Sunday morning in the council office! 3

In 1937, young Lisette Roux and her husband, André, move from Paris to Provence to care for André s grandfather Pascal. Lisette discovers Pascal once worked in the nearby ochre mines and later became a pigment salesman and frame maker. Pascal begins to tutor Lisette in both art and life, allowing her to see his small collection of paintings and the Provençal landscape itself in a new light. War breaks out and André goes off to the front, but not before hiding Pascal s paintings to keep them from the Nazis reach. With German forces spreading across Europe, the sudden fall of Paris, and the rise of Vichy France, Lisette sets out to locate the paintings. Her search takes her through the stunning French countryside, where she befriends Marc and Bella Chagall, who acquaints her with the land, her neighbors, and even herself in ways she never dreamed possible. Through joy and tragedy, occupation and liberation, small acts of kindness and great acts of courage, Lisette learns to forgive the past, to live robustly, and to love again. TRIVIA NIGHT There will be a Trivia Night fundraiser sponsored by s Youth on January 28 in Fellowship Hall. Doors will open at 6 PM with Trivia to start at 6:30 PM. Get your team organized now.
