Dick is going to be speaking about Gideon s International and the work and services that Gideon provides to people to help them learn about Jesus. ASH WEDNESDAY There will be a Service with Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion on March 1 at 12 PM and 5:30 PM. Lent is often experienced as a season of reflection, looking inward, soul-searching. It s a season for looking intently toward Jesus, the author of our faith, and longing to know him better. It s a season of community, because we come together to worship and share a meal. (Sundays and Seasons, Lent) During the forty days of Lent, we join to share God s Word through worship and to share fellowship with one another. During this Lenten season, we encourage all members of to be faithful in both worships Wednesday evening and Sunday morning. LENT 2017 This year (2017) marks the international observance of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. In honor of that anniversary, our midweek worship service for Lent is built around Luther s Small Catechism. Luther wrote the Small Catechism as a tool to teach faith, not just within the church but in families homes. Luther intended the home to be the place where faith was first shared and taught. Most of us think of the Small Catechism as something to be memorized that teaches us how to understand life with God and other people. And it is that. But what if we put a more active spin on the catechism? What if we looked to it to inspire concrete actions we might take, thereby expressing its wisdom in positive deeds, not just words? That s what we will explore throughout the season of Lent. The Small Catechism has six chief parts: Confession and Forgiveness (Ash Wed., March 1) The Ten Commandments (March 8) The Lord s Prayer (March 15) Creeds (March 22) Holy Baptism (March 29) Holy Communion (April 5) Join us in Lent as we explore Luther s Small Catechism for daily living! Services on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 PM with a meal to follow. 4

SOUTHEASTERN IOWA SYNOD LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN Forward Together: The Campaign for the Southeastern Iowa Synod is a $1.2-million campaign to support ministries of the Southeastern Iowa Synod. This campaign reflects a commitment to five main priorities: congregations, leadership, hunger and poverty, the global church, and where needed most. Churches are facing financial pressures, as do many families and businesses around the country, in Iowa, and in our synod. We are moving Forward Together in an effort to enhance our partnership with leaders, congregations, and other ministry partners. Through the Campaign for the Southeastern Iowa Synod we are excited about helping congregations, expanding our efforts to alleviate hunger and poverty, supporting new leaders for the church, and strengthening our partnership for the global church. Contributions to this campaign are above and beyond regular offerings and mission support received by the Southeastern Iowa Synod. Growing our capacity for ministry and connect people with the mission of the church. Together we can do more in our communities, our synod, and around the world. To learn more about this campaign and give online visit NEW MEMBERS If you are interested in joining the mission of Lutheran Church by becoming a member, we will be having new member orientation coming soon. Please see Pastor Cauley for details on how to join our congregation. 5
6 LETTER FROM AMY I would like to thank the people I ve had the pleasure to work with at over the past four years. I am a 3 rd generation member of this congregation and proud to know and worship with each of you. Until serving on Executive and Congregational Council, I did not fully understand the workings of the church. I strongly encourage everyone to volunteer on a committee, step up to chairperson or consider a secretary or treasurer capacity position on council. It is an extremely rewarding and educational experience not without a time and effort commitment as well. The councils play a huge role in all aspects of the church and you should be aware of who they are and make a point to Thank them for their service, as well as discuss your concerns or comments. They spend a lot of time trying to please the full congregation which is sometimes impossible to do. I truly appreciate your time and service and getting to know all of you better. My list includes past and current members: Roger Roskens, Julie Frye, Bob Nicolai, Dave Starkweather, Mark Perisho, Dyann Roby, Sue Smith, Dave Hanson, Mike Carter, Judy Sebbert, Stacey Ramos, Tyler Baars, Kathleen Schippers and Pastor Steve. Heather Mills is also a great help to us in preparing the monthly packets. Best of luck to all the newest members Kim Sears & Larry Driskell, good things are happening! Sincerely, Amy Zybarth (outgoing Council Secretary) PURCHASE ORDER POLICY This is a reminder of how incurred expenses are to be paid. There is an approved purchase policy in the church office. This is a summary of that policy. If you have purchased something for, you have three ways to go: 1) Do nothing. 2) Donate the purchase to. Take the receipt to the church office and ask it to be placed as an In Kind donation on your giving statement. 3) To receive reimbursement, attach a receipt to a filled out purchase order. Purchase orders should be submitted with the payee s name, along with a signature of Pastor Cauley or a council member. If known, check off the account budget line. Council Committee chairpersons that fill out purchase orders for expenses for themselves need these purchase orders co-signed by the council treasurer, Mark Perisho, or council president, Bob Nicolai. All signed purchase orders are turned in to the church office. Payment is on the 15th and the last day of the month (example: 28th, 30th, or 31st). 6
