LENT 2017 In honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, our midweek Lent worship service is built around Luther s Small Catechism. Most of us think of the Small Catechism as something to be memorized that teaches us how to understand life with God and other people. But what if we put a more active spin on the catechism; looked to it to inspire concrete actions we might take, expressing its wisdom in positive deeds, not just words? That s what we will explore throughout the season of Lent. The Small Catechism has six chief parts: Holy Communion (Wed., April 5) Services on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 PM with a meal to follow. ADVANCE CARE PLANNING The Muscatine County Advance Care Planning Initiative presents a free screening of Consider the Conversation: a documentary on a taboo subject. This documentary is a powerful 60minutes that examines multiple perspectives on end-of-life conversations and care. This though-provoking film includes intimate accounts from patients, family members, doctors, nurses, clergy, and national experts. Learn more about the importance of advance care planning for all ages; emotional, physical, and social burdens of dying; and talking with others about end-of-life wishes. The event will take place at Lutheran Living Event Center on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 5:30-7:30 PM. Dinner will be at 5:30 PM, documentary at 6 PM, and discussion at 7 PM. 10 MARCH COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS Pastor Steve announced his sabbatical leave: June 12 through September 5. Information on dates and events and other information will be in next month s contact. Pastor Jacque Berlin will serve as sabbatical pastor. Worship and Evangelism are working on a survey regarding worship times. Dates for this survey will be March 27 through April 12. Pastor Luhwa s visit is scheduled for September 18 through October 16. He is currently working on obtaining his visa. Dyann Roby reported that the video portion for the Zion website is almost complete. If all goes well it should be ready next month. Parish Ed/Youth report the dates set for Vacation bible School are June 5 through 9. The Garden of Eatin is to be expanded with three more raised garden boxed. Construction is scheduled for the end of March. SOCIAL MINISTRY UPDATE With the kind help of Dave Starkweather, Bob Nicolai and Riley Padgett we are adding three more raised beds to our garden. This means that early April we will need a few good people with wheel barrels and shovels to move the soil into the boxes. Anyone able to help with this or be involved with the fun part of planting and growing our garden should contact Judy Sebbert at or judy.sebbert@gmail.com. Thanks to everyone for the generous donations for our Muscatine Food Pantry. I delivered 103 pounds on Monday, March 27. They very much appreciate our donations and are looking forward to the fresh vegetables we provide in the summer. FINANCIAL UPDATE Feb /12 Yr.
