ONE SUNDAY SERVICE CONTINUES After a council vote, worship services will remain one service at 9 AM on Sundays until the annual meeting (end of January 2017) when a congregation vote can be held. The Table worship service will continue on Saturday evenings at 5 PM. HOSPITALITY HELP NEEDED Hospitality will continue to be held after service every Sunday now through the annual meeting in January of Help is needed to serve hospitality on the Sundays of October 2, October 9, November 27, December 4, January 22, and January 29. There is a sign up sheet on the nursery bulletin board strictly for helping with hospitality. If you have any questions, please speak with Bob Nicolai. LABOR DAY BRUNCH Zion Youth will be serving brunch after service on Sunday, September 4. Food sign up sheet will be up on the office bulletin board. Please have items to church by Saturday, September 3 at 9 AM. Youth and parents are needed to set up on September 3 at 9 AM and to serve Sunday. This is a great way for confirmation students to get service projects done! OFFICE CLOSING The church office will be closed on Monday, September 5 for Labor Day. Please plan any visits or appointments accordingly.

GROUP 6 Group 6 will meet at 7:00 PM on September 15 at Denise Baird s in West Liberty. ADULT ENRICHMENT 5 6 Please join in for the fall adult education series, Women of the Old Testament. We will take an in-depth look at the book of Ruth, Esther, Song of Songs, and other stories of women of faith in the Old Testament. Our guide for the video series is The Rev. Dr. Lisa Wolfe who will take us on a n enlightening journey through the study. The class will take place throughout the fall during the education hour beginning at 10:15 AM. Being in your surplus produce to the church and place it on the round table in the narthex. Anyone interested in the produce may take it home for a free-will donation. The money collected will go to World Hunger and any produce that is left will be given to MCSA. SAUERKRAUT SUPPER VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are needed to help with the annual Zion Sauerkraut Supper. You can contact Stacey Ramos at or Sheryl Mercer at if you have any questions or would like to help. RALLY DAY Sunday School will begin on September 11 at 10:15 AM. This is a time to meet teachers, enjoy a craft and music, and learn different ways to pray. OUR HANDS. On Sunday, September 11, 11 AM to 4PM, ELCA Congregations will be putting their faith into action by serving their communities in ways that share the love of God with all of God s people. Once again, Grace, New Era, Shepherd of the Cross, and Zion Lutheran churches will be joining hands in a community day of service by collecting items for the Muscatine Food Pantry. Volunteers can sign up at or call the church office ( ) and we will sign you up. We are asking for two volunteers per 1-hour shift at either Hy-Vee Main Street on E.6th; Walmart; or Hy-Vee Food Store on 2nd Ave. Your duties would be to monitor the MUSCATINE FOOD PANTRY COLLECTION DAY table by distributing a needs list to incoming shoppers, accepting and thanking them for the donations, and placing them in the collection bins, all of which will be provided. You may want to bring a lawn chair and wear your Zion/GWOH T-shirt. Please contact Judy Sebbert at (563) or (563) or call the church office and let Heather know if you would like to help. FAITH STEPPING STONES Three Year Olds begin Sunday School on Sunday, September 18 along with the other students. These 3 year olds will also be receiving their Story Bibles this day at both worship services. Third Graders will begin a review of the Bible on Sundays, September 25 and October 2. They, along with their parents, will work on finding specific verses in the Bible and reviewing both the Old and New Testaments. The third graders will then receive their Bibles on Sunday, October 9. *There will be no Sunday School on October 16 for Consecration Sunday. 4

5 CROP WALK FOR HUNGER CROP Hunger Walk will be having a fundraiser at Boonie's on September 19.The CROP walk will be October 2 at 2 PM at the Muscatine Riverfront. Sign up will be held after service on September 4, 11, 18, and 25. Donations may be made at SAUERKRAUT SUPPER Zion will be having their annual Sauerkraut Supper on Thursday, September 22. The meal will be served from 4 to 6:30 PM. Prices are $9 per adult and $4 per child ten years and under. Menu: Sauerkraut with roast pork, mash potatoes and gravy, green beans, noodles, applesauce, a roll with butter, and pies for dessert. Coffee and milk will be provided for beverages. Carry-outs are available with tickets. You can begin to purchase tickets after worship on September 4 and 11 or feel free to stop by the church office from September 12 through noon on September 22 to purchase tickets. Tickets will also be available to purchase at the door. Z-BOOK CLUB The next meeting of Z-Book Club will be Monday, September 26 at 5 pm at HyVee Market Cafe. The book is Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland. (Kindle edition is Amazon used hardback for as low as 1 cent.) A Dutch painting of a young girl survives three and a half centuries through loss, flood, anonymity, theft, secrecy, even the Holocaust. This is the story of its owners whose lives are influenced by its beauty and mystery. Despite their unsatisfied longings, their own and others' flaws, the girl in hyacinth blue has the power to engender love in all its human variety. This luminous story begins in the present day, when a professor invites a colleague to his home to see a painting that he has kept secret for decades.
