God finds us at times and places where we need to be renewed. This has been the story of God's people through history. For the Church today, with God s help worshipping together brings renewal. Thoughtful participation in community brings renewal. Working together to sense the Spirit of God brings renewal. When God's people come together to listen respectfully to one another, share hurts, confess judgmental actions, and then bravely seek healing of old and fresh wounds, God's Spirit is at work in ways that affirm both the community and the individual people that make community possible. As a true People of God, we pray, Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us, and we forgive. As the living Body of Christ, when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. A congregation worshipping is at a spiritual "center" where a shared word and shared prayers feed those that gather. Without such meetings at these oases provided by God, no sense of belonging and common identity happens and the heart of God grows heavy. Therefore God calls God's people to worship as a focusing and defining act. In public worship we do well to find a place of rest from work a place to recover equilibrium. In this special place, we may get a glimpse of possibilities and fresh perspectives that give us new energy. In this special place we may share stories. In this special place wounds may be healed. Love on the journey, Pastor Bill Presbytery of Hudson River

5 Vacation Bible School Summer 2013 We had a wonderful, amazing, beautiful, encouraging, blessed, and safe Vacation Bible School this past July. With over 50 children and 40 amazing volunteers, our week of VBS Camp, "So Many Roads", went very well. VBS is an amazing time for our church throughout the week and especially on Friday when we are blessed with a full sanctuary filled with the voices of children large and small and their parents. Its a lot of work but most of the people who volunteer have been doing it for many years and so many hands make the work enjoyable, a true blessing, and the definition of "community". Our mission focus again this year is the Rhema Gardens Project in Southern India where our Sunday School children sponsor a child and we have directed our outreach for the past year. This year we sponsored a sandal/shoe drive and one of the VBS crafts was a "shoe bank" into which the VBS campers placed their coins during the week as part of an awareness activity. Our first shipment to India contained 46 pairs of sandals and there are more to send. We also collected $224 in our shoe banks that will be sent on to Rhema Gardens. Thanks to all for their support! Here is a list of the folk who made it happen... our VBS Volunteers for 2013 "SO MANY ROADS!" 6 Joys, Memories and God s Gifts In this new column of the newsletter we invite you to share your "JOYS": births, graduations, weddings and other special moments in your life. We also invite you to share "MEMORIES": of loved ones and events that enriched your life. Photos may accompany your "Joys" and "Memories." Sharing "GOD'S GIFTS" may be a beautiful sunrise or sunset, a flower, a child's wonder or a peaceful scene captured in a photo or anything else you consider a gift from God. Please have your submissions into the office by the 20th of the month. Galatians 5:22 "...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness..." Joys Mo Moss became a grandmother August 15th. Jackson James Barrett was born at 4:00 AM, weighing in at 8 lbs. 2 oz. Mother and Father, Christy & Michael Barrett and baby Jackson are doing fine. We offer prayers of praise and gratitude to God for the blessing of this new life joining Mo's family today. Victoria Trent has arrived. Born August 26th at 4:52AM, weighing 8 lbs. 4oz and long. Congratulations to the Trent family! We offer prayers and blessings to God for the blessing of this new life joining the Trent family.
7 Ministry and the Spiritual Life All Jesus words and actions emerge from his intimate relationship with his Father. Do you not believe, Jesus says, that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? What I say to you I do not speak of my own accord: it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his works. You must believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe it on the evidence of these works (John 14:10-11). Just as all Jesus words and actions emerge from his communion with his Father, so all our words and actions must emerge from our communion with Jesus. In all truth I tell you, he says, whoever believes in me will perform the same works as I do myself, and will perform even greater works...whatever you ask for in my name I will do (John 14:12-13). It is this profound truth that reveals the relationship between the spiritual life and the life of ministry. Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith by Henri Nouwen Bible Quiz Elisha was appointed by this prophet to be his successor. Elisha then watched as this man was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot. Who was the prophet? A. Amos B. Elijah C. Isaiah D. Ezekiel Answer: B (See 2 Kings 2:11.) With blessings from the Nurture Ministry The Savvy Soul Sisters of Syntax Our book club enjoyed our annual field trip to NYC on July 27 th. We had a delicious, family-style lunch at Tonys Di Napoli followed by attending the Broadway production of Trip to Bountiful starring Cicely Tyson, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Vanessa Williams. It was a wonderful day and a great memory for all who went. Our next book club meeting will be on September 6 th at the home of Mary Thomas. We are currently reading Orphan Train: A Novel, a work of historical fiction by Christina Baker Kline. A compelling story about loss, adaptability, and courage... With compassion and delicacy Kline presents a little-known chapter of American history and draws comparisons with the modern-day foster care system. (Library Journal) The next book we will be reading is In the Woods by Tana French. This psychological thriller won four national awards, an outstanding accomplishment for a first novel. Interesting premise: Three children disappear from their neighborhood, but only one of them is ever found "in the woods." He has no memory of what happened. Twenty years later, that boy, who has kept his identity secret, is a detective investigating the recent murder of a little girl in the same woods. Can he solve the current mystery and also the one involving his own childhood? This one kept me guessing! (A reader review) We welcome anyone who loves to read to join us.

9 Congregational Life Mark your calendars: Homecoming Lunch - September 15th Everybody's Birthday Party Lunch - November 3rd Taste of Christmas - December 15th Any questions see Deb Erchick or Sue Hegmann. The mind of Christ Kate Wilkinson ( ), who ministered to young women in west London, wrote only one hymn. May the Mind of Christ, My Savior is a powerful message based on Philippians 2:5. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus (NRSV). Here are a few verses, which can also serve as prayers: May the mind of Christ, my Savior, Live in me from day to day, By his love and power controlling All I do and say. May the Word of God dwell richly In my heart from hour to hour, So that all may see I triumph Only through his power. May his beauty rest upon me, As I seek the lost to win, And may they forget the channel, Seeing only him. Board of Deacons Food Pantry - The food pantry welcomes all donations. Needed for September will be: canned juice, jelly, peanut butter and powdered milk. Please add at least one of these items to your shopping list.
